El uzbeko Murodjon Akhmadaliev, campeón mundial WBA-IBF del peso supergallo, y el estadounidense Stephen Fulton, titular mundial WBC-WBO de la misma división, habían manifestado su deseo de unificar los cuatro cinturones. Esto parecía que podría encontrarse con un obstáculo evidente, puesto que Akhmadaliev es parte de la alianza Matchroom/DAZN y Fulton es miembro del congolmerado de PBC/Showtime-FOX. No obstante, no han sido finalmente las pugnas entre compañías las que han creado una barrera para la pugna, sino una orden de defensa obligatoria.
Efectivamente, la IBF ha ordenado a Akhmadaliev que debe afrontar a continuación una defensa obligatoria ante el excampeón mundial filipino Marlon Tapales, teniendo ambos hasta el 25 de octubre para alcanzar un acuerdo y evitar la subasta. Este combate ya había sido ordenado meses atrás, pero la Federación terminó aplazando su requerimiento debido a que la WBA era quien tenía preferencia según el sistema rotatorio de defensas para los campeones unificados.
Sin duda, un choque entre Akhmadaliev y Fulton habría resultado muchísimo más interesante, y habría llevado al ganador al top 10 libra por libra, pero no habiendo ni mucho menos certezas respecto a que Matchroom y PBC hubiesen podido llegar a algún tipo de acuerdo, nos tendremos que conformar con un choque que no es malo del todo. Y es que Tapales ha logrado sus últimas 10 victorias antes del límite, algunas de ellas ante rivales de buen nivel, y es un boxeador con un estilo entretenido de ver, si bien es cierto también que perdió por KOT ante un Iwasa al que el propio Akhmadaliev batió antes del límite.

This pretension seemed that might run into an obvious roadblock, as Akhmadaliev is part of the Matchroom/DAZN alliance and Fulton is a member of the PBC/Showtime-FOX conglomerate. However, it has not ultimately been a dispute between companies what has created a barrier for the fight to get made, but rather a mandatory defense order.

This fight was already ordered months ago, but the Federation ended up postponing its request because it was WBA’s turn according to the rotating system of defenses for unified champions.
Without a doubt, a clash between Akhmadaliev and Fulton would have been much more interesting, and would have taken the winner to the top 10 pound for pound. However, without there being certainty at all about Matchroom and PBC being able to reach some kind of agreement for the undisputed match, we will have to settle for a clash that is not completely bad. Tapales has achieved his last 10 victories by stoppage, some of them against good level opposition, and he is a boxer with an entertaining style to watch, although it is also true that he lost by TKO against Iwasa, whom Akhmadaliev himself beat by stoppage.
