El invicto Ekow “The Engine” Essuman 18(7KO)-0 encaró un combate sobre el papel exigente ante Samuel “True Sensation” Antwi 14(6KO)-2(1) en el respaldo del Joyce-Parker. Sin embargo, una vez más Essuman logró una victoria por decisión unánime que extendió su racha y que le sirvió para defender por tercera vez su corona de Reino Unido. Las cartulinas fueron 117-112, 116-113 y 115-114.
Contando como sus mayores cualidades su gran resistencia al cansancio y su capacidad para lanzar muchos puños, Essuman se equivocó aceptando una pelea demasiado táctica y con limitado ritmo ante un Antwi veloz, hábil y con buen manejo de los golpes aislados. Aun así, aunque en ocasiones Antwi llegó con algunas manos nítidas y el titular no estuvo tan agresivo como en otras ocasiones, Essuman tuvo una mayor insistencia en sus ataques y logró decantar por poco varios asaltos.
De hecho, con el paso de los minutos Essuman empezó a aumentar su ritmo, descargando uppercuts enlazados con hooks, series de rectos y combinaciones de ganchos ante un Antwi que empezó a verse incomodado por la presión. Llevado eventualmente a las cuerdas, el retador fue alcanzado por buenos golpes de poder y, si bien pudo salirse del encierro, no logró encontrar la manera de frenar firmemente a Essuman, que era quien decidía cuándo contener su avance.
Si el campeón hubiese optado por correr riesgos y volcarse al ataque seguramente habría podido lograr mayores éxitos y evitar que varios asaltos fuesen demasiado ajustados. Pero sabiendo que estaba por delante y que su oponente tenía aún menos actividad que él, Essuman se conformó con ir haciendo lo suficiente con salteadas ofensivas para asegurarse el triunfo por decisión.
Essuman ha afirmado que su deseo es perseguir objetivos internacionales, pero en una división como el peso wélter, en la que ni siquiera aspirantes de élite con talentos desbordantes tienen caminos claros para alcanzar el mundial, parece tenerlo muy difícil para escalar hasta lo más alto.
Antes del combate Essuman-Antwi, el campeón británico del peso supermedio Mark “Kid Dynamite” Heffron 29(23KO)-2(2)-1 sólo necesitó un round para terminar su sencillo rodaje ante el argentino Martín Ezequiel Bulacio 10(7KO)-7(3), mientras que la prometedora peso pluma Raven Chapman 4(2KO)-0 logró una decisión unánime (79-73, 78-74 y un 77-75) sobre la extitular mundial argentina Jorgelina “Jota” Guanini 10(1KO)-5-2.

In the support of the event Joyce-Parker, undefeated Ekow “The Engine” Essuman 18(7KO)-0 faced what looked on paper like a demanding bout against Samuel “True Sensation” Antwi 14(6KO)-2(1). However, once again Essuman achieved a unanimous decision victory that extended his streak and served to defend his British crown for the third time. The scorecards were 117-112, 116-113 and 115-114.
Having as his greatest qualities his excellent stamina and his ability to throw many punches, Essuman did a mistake by initially accepting a fight that was too tactical and with limited pace against a fast and skillful boxer as Antwi, who is good using isolated shots. Still, while Antwi did land some sharp hands at times and the titleholder wasn’t as aggressive as he was on other occasions, Essuman had a more insistent attack and managed to narrowly win several rounds.
In fact, as the minutes passed, Essuman began to increase his rhythm, throwing combinations of straights punches and hooks against Antwi, who began to look uncomfortable under pressure. Eventually put against the ropes, the challenger was hit by some good power shots and, while he was able to avoid being cornered for too long, he couldn’t find a way to neutralize Essuman, who decided when to stop his advance.
If the champion had chosen to take risks and attack much more, he would surely have been able to achieve greater success and win several close rounds more clearly. But knowing that he was ahead on the scorecards and that his opponent was even less active than him, Essuman settled for doing just enough to secure a decision win.
Essuman has stated that his desire is to pursue international goals, but in a division like welterweight, in which even elite contenders with amazing talent don’t have clear paths to world championships, he should have a very hard time climbing to the top.
Before the fight Essuman-Antwi, British super middleweight champion Mark “Kid Dynamite” Heffron 29(23KO)-2(2)-1 only needed one round to end his easy stay-busy fight against the Argentinian Martín Ezequiel Bulacio 10(7KO)-7( 3), while the promising featherweight Raven Chapman 4(2KO)-0 achieved a unanimous decision win (79-73, 78-74 and a 77-75) over former world titleholder Jorgelina “Jota” Guanini 10(1KO)- 5-2.
