Tras el triunfo del ruso Zaur Abdullaev 16(10KO)-1(1) sobre el excampeón mundial Jorge Linares, muchos pensaron que este sólo había sido un golpe de suerte o una muestra de la crisis por la que pasa el veterano venezolano. Sin embargo, este domingo, Abdullaev nuevamente demostró que simplemente está en un gran momento de forma forzando el abandono del pegador mexicano Jovanni “Impacto” Straffon 24(17KO)-5(1)-1 en el quinto asalto.
Puede que el errar tantos golpes ante el elusivo Maxi Hughes condicionase negativamente a Straffon, pero el caso es que no ofreció una presión tan intensa como debía, manteniendo las acciones en la distancia media o larga e incluso llegando a ceder la iniciativa eventualmente. Así, si bien sacó algunos peligrosos hooks, sobre todo abajo, que demostraron su pegada, estos estaban demasiado separados entre sí, de modo que el fuerte Abdullaev pudo bloquear y hacer valer su contundente jab, secos directos diestros y ganchos al torso.
“Impacto” necesitaba darle más continuidad a sus ofensivas, especialmente teniendo la potencia para causar estragos, pero siguió ofreciendo ataques salteados que el ruso aguantó y replicó con mayor precisión. Además, cuando no estaba bajo ataque, Abdullaev se anticipaba con sus rectos y anotaba manos claras, estremeciendo con un directo diestro a Straffon en el cuarto round. Con su gran coraje, el mexicano soportaba el castigo y replicaba con fiereza, pero el combate se iba decantando cada vez de forma más clara para Abdullaev, que impactaba duros uno-dos y uno-dos-hook.
Con tantos golpes de poder recibidos y un jab tan potente alcanzándole repetidamente, Straffon padeció una seria inflamación en su ojo derecho que motivó el abandono del púgil antes del comienzo del sexto episodio.
Teniendo clasificados por encima de él a Vasiliy Lomachenko, Isaac Cruz y George Kambosos, Abdullaev no lo va a tener nada fácil para alcanzar la pelea mundialista que desea. En cualquier caso, de momento ha demostrado una vez tras otra que su mala actuación ante Haney no representa su nivel real y que es verdaderamente un peso ligero más que capaz, necesitando aguardar ahora a la convención anual del WBC para saber cuándo y contra quién podrá alcanzar una crucial eliminatoria final.

After the victory of the Russian Zaur Abdullaev 16(10KO)-1(1) over former world champion Jorge Linares, many thought that this was just a stroke of luck or a sign of the crisis that the Venezuelan veteran is going through. However, this Sunday, Abdullaev again showed that he is simply in great shape by forcing the corner stoppage of Mexican puncher Jovanni “Impacto” Straffon 24(17KO)-5(1)-1 in the fifth round.
Missing so many shots against the elusive Maxi Hughes may have conditioned Straffon negatively, but the fact was that he didn’t offer a pressure as intense as he should have, keeping the actions in the mid or long range and even giving up the initiative. So, despite he did throw some dangerous hooks, especially down, that showed his punch, they were too far apart, so the strong Abdullaev blocked and used his hard jab, his sharp right hand and hooks to the body.
“Impacto” needed to attack with more continuity, especially having the power to hurt his opponent, but he kept throwing offensives too sporadically that the Russian resisted and countered with greater precision. Also, when he wasn’t under attack, Abdullaev punched first and connected clear shots, rocking Straffon in the fourth round with a right hand. With his great courage, the Mexican withstood the punishment and replied fiercely, but Abdullaev was winning more and more clearly as minutes went by through hard one-twos and one-two-hooks.
With so many power shots received and such a powerful jab hitting him repeatedly, Straffon suffered a serious swelling in his right eye that prompted his corner to stop the fight before the beginning of the sixth episode.
With Vasiliy Lomachenko, Isaac Cruz and George Kambosos ranked above him, Abdullaev is not going to have an easy time getting the world title fight he wants. In any case, he has proven time after time that his poor performance against Haney does not represent his real level and that he is truly a more than capable lightweight, so now he just needs to wait for the annual WBC convention to find out when and against who he could reach a crucial final eliminator.
