Antes de que Zaur Abdullaev pusiese en riesgo su posición en los rankings enfrentándose a Jovanni Straffon, los aficionados rusos se aseguraron celebrar una clara victoria, dado que el prospecto del peso medio Vadim Tukov 8(3KO)-0 noqueó al argentino Brian Damian Chaves 14(5KO)-3(3) en el sexto round.
El imbatido trabajó muy bien al torso con combinaciones de hooks y sacó afilados rectos enlazados al rostro, por lo que fue acumulando castigo en el zurdo Chaves, que intentó replicar con su jab pero que no pudo contener la eficacia de un Tukov más atento en defensa que en otras ocasiones. Finalmente, en el cuarto round Chaves pagó el precio de recibir tantos ganchos al torso y puso la rodilla en el tapiz por un nuevo hook abajo. El argentino aguantó ese asalto y el siguiente, pero en el sexto un potente gancho al hígado le puso de rodillas en la lona durante la cuenta completa.
Yaqubov volvió a la senda del triunfo
Después de perder una eliminatoria WBC del peso superpluma contra O’Shaquie Foster, ni el tayiko Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov 19(10KO)-1 ni su equipo quieren perder el tiempo ni descolgarse en las clasificaciones (es 7º WBC). Así que este domingo dieron el primer paso para enderezar el rumbo derrotando al argentino Carlos Daniel “Zorrito” Córdoba 15(3KO)-8(2) por decisión unánime.
En el comienzo, Córdoba realizó pruebas ofensivas, pero el jab de Yaqubov le frenó, perdiendo la iniciativa y necesitando recurrir a sus esquivas de cintura. Con todo, pese a sus acciones defensivas, en el segundo asalto un uno-dos descendente dejó tocado al visitante, quien tuvo que apoyarse en su experiencia para pasar el mal momento.
El argentino se recuperó y continuó ofreciendo su boxeo oscilante, llegando con alguna astuta mano con entradas y salidas, pero en general la solidez de Yaqubov se impuso a través de firmes jabs, duros ganchos de mano adelantada y precisos directos antes de que un izquierdazo llevase al tapiz a Córdoba en el sexto round. Éste además perdió un punto injustamente en el séptimo episodio por supuestamente agacharse demasiado en repetidas ocasiones (aunque en realidad estaba siendo empujado en la mayoría de ellas), así que alcanzada la decisión era evidente quien iba a imponerse.
Mucho menos se prolongó la pelea del peso ligero entre el ruso Vildan Minasov 8(5KO)-1 y el armenio Karen Margaryan 4(1KO)-2(2)-2, puesto que se resolvió en el primer round. Margaryan salió muy agresivo, empujando hacia las cuerdas a su rival con sus combinaciones de hooks, pero Minasov aguantó y encontró una derecha a la contra con la que dañó a su oponente, que cayó tras un nuevo golpe recto. En la reanudación un gancho zurdo al cuerpo puso a Margaryan de nuevo en la lona y, aunque el púgil se levantó, el árbitro detuvo el combate.

Before Zaur Abdullaev put his position in the rankings at risk by facing Jovanni Straffon, Russian fans celebrated a clear victory, as middleweight prospect Vadim Tukov 8(3KO)-0 knocked out Argentinian Brian Damian Chaves 14(5KO)-3(3) in the sixth round.
The unbeaten worked very well to the body with hook combinations and landed sharp straight punches to the face, so he accumulated punishment on the southpaw Chaves, who tried to reply with his jab but could not decrease the effectiveness of Tukov, more wary on defense than in other occasions. Finally, in the fourth round Chaves paid the price of receiving so many body shots and put his knee on the mat due to another hook down. The Argentinian resisted that round and the next one, but in the sixth a powerful hook to the liver brought him to his knees during the full count.
Yaqubov returned to winning ways
After losing a WBC super featherweight eliminator against O’Shaquie Foster, the Tajik Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov 19(10KO)-1 did not want to lose time or be dropped in the rankings (he is 7th WBC). So this Sunday they took the first step to straighten his course by defeating the Argentinian Carlos Daniel “Zorrito” Córdoba 15(3KO)-8(2) by unanimous decision.
In the beginning, Córdoba made offensive tests, but Yaqubov’s jab neutralized him and made him lose the initiative, needing to resort to his waist dodges. However, despite his defensive actions, in the second round a one-two hurt the visitor, who had to rely on his experience to get through the bad moment.
The Argentinian recovered and continued to use his oscillating boxing, going in and out and landing some astute hands, but overall Yaqubov’s solidity prevailed through firm jabs, hard lead hooks and precise straights shots before a left hand put in the canvas Córdoba in the sixth round. He also unfairly lost a point in the seventh round for repeatedly bending over too much (although in reality he was being pushed downwards), so after the eight rounds it was clear who was going to win.
The lightweight bout between the Russian Vildan Minasov 8(5KO)-1 and the Armenian Karen Margaryan 4(1KO)-2(2)-2 lasted much less, since it ended in the first round. Margaryan started very aggressive, driving his opponent towards the ropes with his combinations of hooks, but Minasov held on and found a counter right hand with which he hurt his opponent, who went down after another straight shot. After the restart a left hook to the body put Margaryan back on the canvas and, although the fighter got up, the referee stopped the fight.
