Dado que la política de los múltiples campeones ha sido justificadamente criticada hasta que se ha encaminado a su desaparición y el título franquicia WBC le está dando al organismo muchos quebraderos de cabeza y una enorme pérdida de prestigio, al Consejo y a la WBA se les ha ocurrido una nueva idea más sutil: organizar innumerables eliminatorias sin ton ni son. Así, estos organismos han encontrado la forma de crear más confusión en el boxeo y ganar más dinero a costa de romper el sistema de eliminatorias, que era muy racional y útil si se ejecutaba bien.
En el caso concreto del peso ligero, Zaur Abdullaev 15(9KO)-1(1) venció una eliminatoria, teóricamente final, contra el excampeón mundial Jorge Linares en febrero, si bien el pasado domingo Isaac Cruz ganó otra ante Eduardo Ramírez, también calificada por diversos medios como eliminatoria final. Por lo tanto, ahora se han dibujado varias preguntas ¿quién es el aspirante obligatorio de la división?, ¿será necesaria una eliminatoria Cruz-Abdullaev?, ¿se decidirá arbitrariamente el aspirante en la Convención del Consejo?, etc.
Dejando de lado cuál será el camino se se elegirá, por lo que respecta al ruso Abdullaev, no piensa quedarse parado aguardando acontecimientos y, siete días después del triunfo de “Pitbull” Cruz, combatirá contra un duro y peligroso pegador mexicano como Jovanni “Impacto” Straffon 24(17KO)-4-1. Este combate será el estelar de una velada de RCC Boxing que se producirá este domingo en el Traktor Ice Arena de Chelyabinsk, Rusia.
Después de que Straffon fuese vencido ampliamente por el enrachado Maxi Hughes, quizás algunos hayan olvidado el triunfo que éste logró en el primer round contra el exretador mundial James Tennyson, o puede que consideren que ya no es una gran amenaza. Con todo, si el hábil Hughes pudo derrotar a Straffon fue debido a que, además de estar en un momento increíble, usó su constante movilidad, su gran astucia, su destreza defensiva y su oportunismo para neutralizar a su rival en un combate táctico, algo que difícilmente podría hacer Abdullaev.
El ruso es mucho menos veloz de piernas, tiene mayores dimensiones, peor defensa y un boxeo mucho más rígido, siendo su especialidad imponer sus uno-dos desde la distancia media usando su fortaleza. Por lo tanto, esto le dará a Straffon la oportunidad que busca, ya que no tendrá que perseguir a un oponente incomodantemente dinámico, si no que encontrará con facilidad momentos para impactar sus golpes de poder. Así, Abdullaev dependerá de sus bloqueos, de su resistencia y de la contundencia de su réplica para intentar hacerse con la victoria en una pelea posiblemente dura.
Es posible pensar que, estando bien posicionado y habiendo ganado una eliminatoria contra un excampeón mundial como Linares, a Abdullaev le valdría más la pena simplemente esperar a que le llegase una gran pugna en la división en lugar de enfrentarse a un boxeador que podría noquearle y que representa mucho más riesgo que ganancia potencial.
No obstante, es verdad también, por un lado, que Abdullaev necesita más experiencia de calidad (sólo tiene 16 peleas) y, por el otro, que si no es capaz de derrotar a Straffon de ningún modo estará preparado para pelear contra Isaac Cruz y los demás nombres del top 5. Así que, aunque es un combate peligroso, es mejor que demuestre ahora que puede superar este test que volver a padecer una derrota desmoralizante como la sufrida ante Haney por precipitarse en su selección de retos.

Se suponía que en este evento iba a participar el invicto peso superpluma Moussa Gholam, que iba a afrontar una dificilísima prueba de fuego ante el eficaz boxeador de presión Elnur Samedov, si bien una enfermedad del primero ha llevado a la cancelación del duelo. Así, en el respaldo ahora destacan dos peleas a diez rounds.
En una de ellas combatirá un participante en otra de esas eliminatorias WBC de consecuencias inciertas como el peso superpluma tayiko Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov 18(10KO)-1, quien tras perder ese duelo ante O’Shaquie Foster tratará de regresar a la senda del triunfo ante el campeón de Argentina del peso superligero Carlos Daniel “Zorrito” Córdoba 15(3KO)-7(2). También será de Argentina el rival del invicto peso medio ruso, de buena carrera amateur, Vadim Tukov 7(2KO)-0, puesto que se medirá a un Brian Damian Chaves 14(5KO)-2(2) que sólo ha sufrido derrotas ante boxeadores de nivel como Abass Baraou y Jeremías Ponce.

Given that the Association’s structure of multiple champions has been criticized until it is headed to its disappearance and the WBC “franchise title” is giving the sanctioning body innumerable headaches and a huge loss of prestige, the Council and the WBA have come up with a new, more subtle idea: organizing countless random eliminators without rhyme or reason. Thus, these organizations have found a way to create more confusion in boxing and make more money at the cost of breaking the eliminator system, that was very rational and useful if executed well.
In the specific case of lightweight, Zaur Abdullaev 15(9KO)-1(1) won a, theoretically, final eliminator against former world champion Jorge Linares in February, although last Sunday Isaac Cruz won another eliminator against Eduardo Ramírez, bout which various media outlets called too a “final eliminator”. Therefore, several questions have now arisen: Who is the mandatory challenger for the division? Will be necessary an eliminator Cruz-Abdullaev? Will the mandatory challenger be arbitrarily decided at the WBC convention?
Leaving aside which path will be chosen, as far as the Russian Abdullaev is concerned, he does not intend to stand still waiting and, seven days after the triumph of «Pitbull» Cruz, he will fight against a tough and dangerous Mexican puncher like Jovanni «Impacto» Straffon 24(17KO)-4-1. This fight will be the main event of an evening organized by RCC Boxing that will take place this Sunday at the Traktor Ice Arena in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
After Straffon was widely beaten by Maxi Hughes, some may have forgotten his first-round win against former world title challenger James Tennyson, or may not consider him much of a threat anymore. All in all, if the skillful Hughes was able to defeat Straffon, it was because, in addition to being in an incredible moment in his career, he used his constant mobility, his great cunning, his defensive prowess and his opportunism to neutralize his rival in a tactical fight, something that Abdullaev can’t do.
The Russian is much slower on his legs, is bigger, has worse defense and a much more rigid boxing, his specialty being to use his strength through one-two combinations from the middle distance. Therefore, this will give Straffon the opportunity he’s looking for, as he won’t have to chase down an uncomfortably mobile opponent, but he’ll easily find moments to land his power shots. Thus, Abdullaev will have to rely on his blocking, his resistance and the forcefulness of his answer to try to obtain victory in a possibly tough fight.
Some may think that, being well ranked and having won an eliminator against a former world champion like Linares, it would be better for Abdullaev to simply wait for a big fight in the division rather than facing a fighter who could knock him out and who has much more risk than potential gain.
However, it is also true, on the one hand, that Abdullaev needs more quality experience (he only has 16 fights) and, on the other hand, that if he is not capable of defeating Straffon, he will in no way be ready to fight Isaac Cruz and the other names in the top 5. So while it’s a dangerous matchup, it’s better proving now that he can pass this test than suffering later another demoralizing loss against a high level opponent for which he is not ready, as happened to him with Devin Haney.
Support of the event
Undefeated super featherweight Moussa Gholam was supposed to take part in this card facing a very difficult and crucial test against the effective pressure boxer Elnur Samedov, although an illness by the former has led to the cancellation of the bout. Thus, now in the support of the bill two ten-round fights stand out.
In one of them will fight a participant in another of those WBC eliminators with uncertain consequences such as the Tajik super featherweight Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov 18(10KO)-1, who after losing that duel against O’Shaquie Foster will try to return to winning ways against the Argentina national super lightweight champion Carlos Daniel “Zorrito” Córdoba 15(3KO)-7(2).
