Jared Anderson

The promising American heavyweight Jared Anderson took a few shots but won in two rounds against Miljan Rovcanin

If Agit Kabayel had finished his bout against the Serbian Miljan Rovcanin 24(16KO)-3(2) in three rounds, it was logical to think that a boxer as agile, fast and promising as the American Jared «Big Baby» Anderson 12(12KO)-0 wasn’t going to need any more time to defeat this same opponent. Indeed, Anderson won in the second round, although in the fight he received perhaps the clearest blows in his still short career.

With straight hands and unconventional hooks, Rovcanin hit Anderson in the face more in the first round than almost all his opponents to date combined and, although the local countered with some nice right hands after dodging and jabs to the body, he was briefly pressed against the ropes in the second round. This unusual situation for Anderson frustrated him a little bit, as he began to push his opponent’s head in the clinch and once even illegally punched the visitor (and took off his mouthguard) when the referee was separating them after a hold.

In any case, Rovcanin, who is not even close to the top-15 level, got tired very quickly and Anderson was able to use his skill and quickness in the short distance to wear him down even more. Thus, still in the second round, a left hook and a hard jab preceded a descending right hand that knocked Rovcanin to the mat for the full count.

That Rovcanin surprised him somewhat early on and, according to the always questionable CompuBox, landed almost as many shots as he did in the first round, shouldn’t be overanalyzed or overrated. However, it is fair to point out that Anderson, like so many other talented and young prospects, faces his fights with too much confidence, almost as if they were a formality on his way to greatness. Although this did not have major consequences against an opponent like Rovcanin, in the future he will face high-level fights in which he won’t be able to take anything for granted and, if he don’t adjust his attitude, could find himself in tricky situations.
