José Pedraza y Richard Commey empataron en igualado y entretenido combate

El enfrentamiento entre el puertorriqueño José “Sniper” Pedraza 29(14KO)-4(1)-1 y el ghanés Richard “RC” Commey 30(27KO)-4(1)-1 no sólo parecía bien emparejado sobre el papel, puesto que sobre el ring también lo fue. De hecho, ambos tuvieron sus momentos favorables en una entretenida pelea que terminó en un justo resultado de empate. Las tarjetas fueron de acertado 95-95, de razonable 96-94 para Commey y un 97-93 algo excesivo a favor de Pedraza.
En el choque de estilos que, como se podía prever, se planteó, Commey salió con mucho ímpetu, consciente de que con una pelea táctica tenía las de perder. Inicialmente, el zurdo Pedraza pudo caminar, contragolpear con ganchos abajo y aguijonear con el jab, pero en el segundo round Commey le puso en momentáneos apuros con un potente gancho zurdo a la cabeza en un cruce en la distancia media-corta. El africano se había salido con la suya en cuanto a crear una pelea con intensidad, pero Pedraza no se amedrentó, y entre esquivas y algunos peligrosos golpes recibidos, replicó en corta con bravura con ganchos al cuerpo.
De todos modos, antes del quinto asalto “RC” parecía haber creado una considerable ventaja gracias a su contundencia y claridad con sus directos diestros aislados, sus uno-dos y sus ganchos zurdos, por lo que Pedraza necesitaba con urgencia un cambio. Éste lo buscó añadiendo más movilidad, insistiendo con las esquivas (algunas de gran calidad) y contragolpeando con ganchos, especialmente al cuerpo. Además, cuando encontró un momento adecuado, Pedraza atacó con decisión con izquierdas rectas. Todo esto se sumó a que Commey padeció un serio corte cerca de su ojo izquierdo por choque de cabezas en el sexto asalto.
Así, poco a poco “Sniper” comenzó a recuperar terreno tanto en las cartulinas como tácticamente hablando, algo que se vio favorecido por el desgaste que crearon en Commey sus golpes al torso. Con todo, aunque la astucia de Pedraza se dejó notar con su selección de puños y sus acciones defensivas, tuvo momentos, como el octavo asalto, con baja actividad y menor acierto. Esto fue compensado en un noveno round en el que el puertorriqueño dañó a su contrincante con unos directos y le hostigó con insistentes combinaciones de hooks y uppercuts, pero Pedraza no se mostró muy activo en un igualado último asalto y no pudo aprovechar la situación de forma determinante.
Al resultado de empate se llegó esencialmente debido a que ambos púgiles usaron parte de las claves para la victoria, pero no todas. En el caso del ghanés, éste fue firme y constante, pero careció de paciencia, algo que tras un arranque fuerte le llevó a una segunda mitad mucho menos eficaz. En cuanto a Pedraza, usó su movilidad, su técnica y su habilidad al contragolpe con buenos resultados, pero su gestión táctica fue irregular y tuvo momentos de estatismo que se vieron penalizados ante la pegada de Commey.
En definitiva, este empate afianzará la perspectiva que muchos tenían de ambos antes del combate, o sea que son buenos boxeadores pero que tienen dificultades para marcar la diferencia al más alto nivel y que, por lo tanto, seguramente les tocará estar uno o dos peldaños por debajo de la cúspide absoluta de la división. Con todo, no deberían faltarles posibles rivales dentro del entramado de Top Rank. Por ejemplo, se podrían medir a Arnold Barboza, al perdedor del José Carlos Ramírez vs. José Zepeda II o incluso podrían hacer de tests decisivos para prospectos.

The fight between the Puerto Rican José “Sniper” Pedraza 29(14KO)-4(1)-1 and the Ghanaian Richard “RC” Commey 30(27KO)-4(1)-1 not only was well matched on paper, since on the ring it was also a good duel. In fact, both had favorable moments in an entertaining fight that ended in a fair result of draw. The scorecards were a correct 95-95, a reasonable 96-94 for Commey and a somewhat excessive 97-93 in favor of Pedraza.
In the clash of styles that, predictably, the bout had, Commey started with aggressiveness, aware that in a tactical fight he could be in a difficult situation. Initially, the southpaw Pedraza was able to walk, counter with hooks down and land the jab, but in the second round Commey hurt him with a powerful left hook to the head in an exchange in the mid-short distance. The African succeeded in creating a fight with intensity, but Pedraza, between dodges and some dangerous punches received, countered bravely at short range with hooks to the body.
However, before the fifth round “RC” seemed to have a considerable advantage thanks to the forcefulness and clarity of his isolated right hands, his one-twos and his left hooks, so Pedraza urgently needed a change. He sought it by adding more mobility, insisting on his dodges (some of great quality) and counterattacking with hooks, especially to the torso. Also, when he found a suitable moment, Pedraza attacked sharply with straight lefts. On top of it, Commey suffered a serious cut in his left eye from a clash of heads in the sixth round.
Thus, little by little «Sniper» began to recover ground both on the scorecards and tactically speaking, something that was favored by the fact that Commey was a bit worn out by the blows to the body received. Nevertheless, although Pedraza’s astuteness was noticeable with his selection of punches and his defensive actions, he had moments, like the eighth round, with low activity and less success. This was compensated in a ninth round in which the Puerto Rican hurt his opponent with straight hands and attacked him with insistent combinations of hooks and uppercuts, but Pedraza was not very active in a close last round and was unable to take advantage of the situation decisively.
The result of draw was essentially reached because both fighters used some of his keys to victory, but not all of them. In the case of the Ghanaian, he was firm and constant, but he lacked patience, something that, after a strong start, led to a much less effective second half. As for Pedraza, he used his mobility, his technique and his ability to counterattack with good results, but his tactical management was irregular and, at times, he stopped his feet, something that was exploited by Commey’s punch.
In short, this draw will strengthen the opinion that many had of both boxers before the clash. That is, that they are good fighters but that they have difficulties to make a difference at the highest level and, therefore, they will be one or two steps below the absolute top of the division. All in all, they shouldn’t have problems finding opponents inside the Top Rank stable. For example they could fight against the loser of the bout José Carlos Ramírez vs. José Zepeda II, against Arnold Barboza, or they could even be decisive tests for prospects.
