Middleweight.

The former Italian welterweight champion Nicola «Il Drago» Cristofori 15(1KO)-3(2)-2 had not faced a significant fight since February 2021, on an evening broadcast by DAZN, he was beaten by TKO in the last round of a match he was winning handily against Maxim Prodan. This lack of meaningful bouts ended on Wednesday, when he defeated the two-time Italian middleweight title challenger Andrea Roncon 20(4KO)-7(2)-1 by clear unanimous decision. The scores were fair: 98-92 and double 97-93.

In the first round Cristofori hurt his opponent with a left hand, so, with Roncon backing into a corner, he attacked with combinations looking to take advantage of the situation. However, «Il Drago» quickly renounced to maintaining his offense and deployed the boxing in which he is a specialist. That is to say, the southpaw Cristofori stayed very mobile, used his fast jab, made dynamic and static dodges and threw straight hands, left uppercuts and one-twos. With these tools, the boxer managed to generate serious tactical difficulties for Roncon, who advanced trying to land hooks but had few successes and missed hands due to Cristofori’s defensive actions (some of remarkable quality).

About halfway through, the favorite began to reduce his punch output and focus too much on the jab, so Roncon was able to capture the two or three rounds the judges gave him. That was because then Roncon managed to shorten the distance, fix Cristofori on the ropes and connect combinations of hooks with determination, also landing isolated lead hooks answering to his opponent’s movements. However, Cristofori was not out of the fight, so a little later, perhaps aided by a second wind, he regained mobility, used better his jab, punched first with sporadic straight lefts and relied again on his defensive skills, managing to recover his control of the fight.

In several recent Italian cards the promoters have paid for minor IBF titles of questionable value, as the holder rarely manages to get ranked. In any case, and beyond the fact that perhaps the money invested in the belt at stake (IBF Mediterranean) could have been used in a better way, the fact is that Cristofori had a positive debut at middleweight, division in which he will surely have better stamina for not having to cut so much weight and in which it seems feasible that he can be crowned national champion again. In this sense, it is worth noting that the current Italian middleweight champion is the veteran Carlo De Novellis, who could only beat Roncon by narrow split decision.
