Hay pruebas en las cuales, más que simplemente medir el nivel de un boxeador en desarrollo, lo verdaderamente importante es comprobar cómo es capaz de ajustar respondiendo ante la adversidad. En el caso caso del estadounidense George “El Yuyu” Acosta 13(1KO)-1, su capacidad de reacción ante las dificultades resultó notable, ya que logró superar apuros para derribar y vencer por decisión unánime a su rival más exigente hasta la fecha, el mexicano Isaac “Canelito” Avelar 16(10KO)-5(2). Las cartulinas fueron justas, dando triple 77-74.
No pudiéndose permitirse tropiezos en este duelo ninguno de los dos, teniendo por lo tanto cierta precipitación y siendo uno diestro y el otro zurdo, primeramente hubo momentos con algo de desorden en los cruces de golpes, pero estos posteriormente se redujeron y los planteamientos quedaron asentados: con un buen jab y una mayor frecuencia de golpeo, Acosta trató de imponerse a un Avelar más centrado en buscar contragolpes duros con su izquierda. Con uno de estos puños “Canelito” dejó tocado a su rival en el segundo asalto, volviéndolo a estremecer con un gancho diestro algo más tarde.
Este éxito llevó a Avelar a atacar más en el tercer asalto, pero no tuvo grandes resultados y, contrariamente, Acosta pudo sacudirse la presión con pasos laterales, recuperar la iniciativa y volver a llegar con más frecuentes uno-dos, gancho abajo-directo diestro, etc. Esta tendencia se afianzó posteriormente, con Avelar conectando entonces algunos potentes contragolpes (pareciendo sacudir con ellos a su oponente en el quinto asalto) pero siendo superado por los más numerosos puños de Acosta, que en el citado asalto dañó al mexicano con una derecha al torso y con otra más lo puso en el tapiz.
Con agarres y voluntad Avelar llegó al descanso a pesar de ser hostigado peligrosamente, e incluso desde el sexto episodio trató de atacar para compensar su mala posición en las tarjetas. Sin embargo, aunque tuvo momentos de sorprendente acierto con ganchos enlazados con directos, en el séptimo round Acosta terminó por imponer sus golpes rectos y en el octavo asalto a Avelar no le quedaron ya energías para hacer una última incisiva carga desesperada.
Viniendo de más de un año de inactividad, siendo esta su segunda pelea que llegó al octavo asalto y teniendo sólo 14 peleas profesionales, Acosta todavía necesitará tiempo y experiencia para poder encarar con buenas opciones de éxito una escalada en las clasificaciones. Además, necesitará ajustar varias cosas, como su defensa mientras ataca y la velocidad de algunas de sus combinaciones. Pero por el momento es un prospecto interesante con el cual se podrían emparejar enfrentamientos muy entretenidos.

There are tests in which, more than simply measuring the level of a boxer in development, what is really important is to check how he is able to adjust responding to adversity. In the case of the American George «El Yuyu» Acosta 13(1KO)-1, his ability to react to difficulties was remarkable, as he managed to overcome some troubles to knock down and beat by unanimous decision his most demanding rival to date, the Mexican Isaac “Canelito” Avelar 16(10KO)-5(2). The scorecards were a fair triple 77-74.
As neither of them wanted to lose this important bout for their careers, as they had therefore a certain haste in their actions and as one was orthodox and the other southpaw, first there were moments with some disorder in the exchanges, but these were later reduced and the approaches settled. With a good jab and a higher punching rate, Acosta tried to impose his work on Avelar, who was more focused on looking for counterpunches with his left hand. With one of these shots «Canelito» hurt his rival in the second round, rocking him again with a right hook a little later.
This success led Avelar to attack more in the third round, but he did not have great results and, on the contrary, Acosta was able to shake off the pressure with lateral steps, regain the initiative and land more frequent combinations in one-two, hook down-right hand, etc. This trend continued in the following minutes, with Avelar then landing some powerful counterpunches (seeming to shake his opponent with them in the fifth round) but being outworked by the more numerous punches of Acosta, who in that same round hurt the Mexican with a right hand to the body and with another one he put it on the canvas.
With clinches and willpower, Avelar reached the break despite being attacked dangerously, and from the sixth round he even tried to be more aggressive to compensate his poor position on the scorecards. However, although he had moments of surprising success with hooks linked with left hands, in the seventh round Acosta ended up imposing his straight punches and in the eighth round Avelar no longer had the energy to make a last desperate and intense charge.
Coming from more than a year of inactivity, this being his second clash that reached the eighth round and having only 14 professional bouts, Acosta will still need more time and experience before being able to try to fight for climbing in the rankings with good chances of success. Also, he will need to improve various things in his boxing, such as his defense while attacking and the speed of some of his combinations. But at the moment he is an interesting prospect with whom some very entertaining matchups could be made.
