There are all kinds of opinions about Golden Boy Promotions and its events, but it is unquestionable that the company has a great ability to protect its biggest income generators while managing to spread the opinion that these boxers are overcoming enormous challenges and not tailor-made fights.

Recently there have been three great examples of this. One of them was Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, who in his time in that company faced bouts against rivals such as James Kirkland, Amir Khan or Julio César Chávez Jr. without this preventing the propaganda mill from greatly overestimating then the merits of the boxer. Another of the examples is Jaime Munguía who, despite having blatantly avoided fights at the top of the middleweight division against Demetrius Andrade and Janibek Alimkhanuly, many consider a boxer close to the top 10 pound for pound despite the fact that he has sustained his recent career against opponents well below the global top 15 of his weight class.

The remaining great example of this Golden Boy Promotions’ ability is the American lightweight Ryan Garcia 22(18KO)-0, whom some already compare to historical boxers despite the fact that he still has everything to prove. Also, although this Saturday he will be overwhelming favorite to defeat the Dominican Javier «El Abejón» Fortuna 37(26KO)-3(1)-1 in the main event of an evening from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, United States, the promotional company has succeeded in making many believe that this is a challenge of enormous difficulty for García.

Actually, Fortuna will have a big disadvantage in size and weight after rehydration, since he is a fighter who faced his first important bouts at featherweight that will battle against an opponent that in the future will surely end up being part of the welterweight division. In addition, although Fortuna is a fighter with technical qualities and some natural talent, the three times he has faced strong pressure boxers, things have ended very badly for him: Jason Sosa took him into deep waters and drowned him, Adrián Granados literally took him out of the ring (although Fortuna avoided defeat with a No Contest) and Joseph Díaz, who is not in a great moment, beat him just relying on order and perseverance.

Therefore, being Fortuna a boxer with constant and incoherent tactical oscillations, who makes the mistake of exchanging unnecessarily many times and who, when he suffers weariness, is even more chaotic and messy, it will be really difficult for him to beat a rival like García, with great advantage in explosiveness and power and that will surely come out determined to try to beat him through aggressiveness. It is true that the American is sometimes very careless in defense while attacking and that he makes repeated errors, but considering that pressure and tenacity often overwhelm Fortuna, it seems that Garcia should be in position to win very clearly.

Rocha, Roach and Sandoval in the support
The main card of this event will feature three other matchups. In the co-main event, the American welterweight Alexis “Lex” Rocha 19(13KO)-1 will face a fight that is not exactly a step forward against the Ghanaian Samuel “Unbelievable” Kotey 23(16KO)-3(1). It should be remembered that the latter lost by decision against Blair Cobbs, whom Rocha knocked out in his most recent bout. As if this were not enough, Kotey has not fought for two and a half years…

Regarding the other two bouts, both will be WBA eliminators. One of them will be in the super featherweight division between the American former world challenger Lamont Roach Jr. 22(9KO)-1-1 and the Venezuelan Ángel «Humildad» Rodríguez 20(10KO)-1, a fight in which the former should be able to win. Roach is a boxer with remarkable skill who is coming from a win over the brave Rene Alvarado, while Rodriguez has a big disadvantage in quality experience and comes into this fight after a controversial win in Russia with a poor performance against Mark Urvanov.

The other eliminator will be at flyweight, and in it the dangerous IBF mandatory challenger Ricardo “El Niño” Sandoval 20(15KO)-1 will also try to secure a world title fight in the Association against the Costa Rican amateur world bronze medalist David “Medallita” Jiménez 11(9KO)-0, who will face a sudden and huge increase in difficulty compared to his previous opponents as a professional.

These fights will be broadcast on DAZN this Saturday from 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT, 1:00 a.m. in the United Kingdom.
