En su momento pareció que la victoria de Arnold Barboza Jr. 26(10KO)-0 ante Álex Saucedo en octubre de 2020 y el triunfo de Danielito Zorrilla 16(12KO)-0 sobre Pablo César Cano en septiembre de 2021 iban a ser inmediatamente sucedidos por un combate crucial para ambos ante un top 15 de la división del peso superligero, pero los meses pasaron y esta pugna no llegó. Finalmente, más de nueve meses después desde que ambos se subieron al ring por última vez, Barboza y Zorrilla se verán las caras este viernes en el combate estelar de una velada de Top Rank desde el Pechanga Resort & Casino de Temécula, Estados Unidos.
Aunque algo más tarde de lo esperado, este combate servirá para que ambos afronten una prueba de fuego que lleve al ganador hacia el top 5 de una división en proceso de cambio en la cumbre. Con Barboza situado como 8º WBO y 11º WBC y Zorrilla posicionado como 10º WBO, con varios boxeadores clasificados por encima estando emplazados a oportunidades en otros organismos y siendo posible que el cinturón de la Organización sea dejado vacante por Taylor en unos meses, el triunfo el viernes podría ser realmente muy valioso.
Además, como suele ser habitual en los enfrentamientos decisivos entre invictos clasificados, el choque permitirá evaluar de forma más profunda a estos boxeadores. En su última subida a un ring Zorrilla superó por mucho las expectativas deshaciéndose con sencillez de Pablo César Cano, pero anteriormente su actuación en su controvertida victoria ante Ruslan Madiyev dejó muchas dudas. Por su parte, aunque Barboza ha tenido varios triunfos meritorios, en su mayor combate hasta la fecha sufrió un knockdown ante Saucedo que otro tipo de boxeador podría haber aprovechado de forma determinante.
De todos modos, aunque a ojos de muchos este es un duelo bastante abierto, no son pocos los que piensan que Zorrilla tuvo algo de suerte en su triunfo ante Cano y que esto trastocó las lecturas sobre su nivel y potencial. Además, Barboza es un boxeador bastante versátil, sólido y regular en su rendimiento, por lo que seguramente será considerado favorito para imponerse.
En cualquier caso, si Zorrilla usa su boxeo dinámico adecuadamente, su oponente deberá tener que andarse con mucho ojo con sus contragolpes, aunque quizás Barboza podría contenerlos si sabe aprovechar su ventaja en alcance para imponer sus rectos desde la distancia larga y media-larga. En ese escenario, y peleando como local en un evento de su promotora y ante un oponente sobre el que existen dudas acerca de su capacidad para lidiar con las dificultades, Barboza estaría en condiciones de obtener la victoria y apuntar a alcanzar una mayúscula pugna hacia finales de año.
Respaldo principal
Este enfrentamiento iba a ser precedido por la sexta pelea profesional para el plata olímpico estadounidense Keyshawn Davis ante el mexicano Jair “Kaiser” Valtierra 16(8KO)-1(1), pero el primero padeció una enfermedad y se tuvo que reconfigurar el semifondo. Así, finalmente Valtierra peleará contra el invicto prospecto del peso ligero Raymond “Danger” Muratalla 14(12KO)-0, que encarará con este quizás su último combate pactado a ocho rounds antes de encaminarse a tests más significativos a diez asaltos.
Aunque Valtierra es un boxeador joven, motivado y con algún triunfo destacable, el año pasado fue noqueado por un púgil de un nivel muy inferior a Muratalla, que será muy claro favorito para vencer.
En principio, si no hay más cambios, la cartelera principal se iniciará con la segunda pelea profesional del plata olímpico estadounidense Richard Torrez 1(1KO)-0, que se medirá en un combate del peso pesado a Roberto Zavala Jr. 2(2KO)-1-1.
Estos tres enfrentamientos serán emitidos por ESPN, ESPN Deportes y ESPN+ el viernes desde las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 de la madrugada en hora española.

At the time it seemed that Arnold Barboza Jr.’s 26(10KO)-0 victory against Álex Saucedo in October 2020 and Danielito Zorrilla’s 16(12KO)-0 triumph over Pablo César Cano in September 2021 were going to be immediately followed by a crucial fight for both fighters against a top 15 in the super lightweight division. However, the months passed and this decisive bout did not come. Finally, more than nine months after they both entered the ring for the last time, Barboza and Zorrilla will face each other this Friday in the main event of a Top Rank evening from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, United States.

Anyway, although in the eyes of many this is a fairly even duel, many others think that Zorrilla had luck in his victory against Cano and that distorted the analysis about his real level and potential. In addition, Barboza is a very versatile boxer, solid and consistent in his performances, so he will surely be considered the favorite to win.
In any case, if Zorrilla uses his mobility, his opponent will have to be very careful with his counterpunches, although perhaps Barboza could neutralize them if he exploits properly his reach to impose his straight punches from long and medium distance. In that scenario, and fighting at home in an event of his promoter and against a rival about whom there are doubts regarding his capacity to deal with difficulties, Barboza would be in a position to obtain the victory and aim for a major fight towards the end of the year.

This bout was going to be preceded by the sixth professional fight for the American Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis against the Mexican Jair “Kaiser” Valtierra 16(8KO)-1(1), but the former suffered an illness and the co-feature had to be reconfigured. Thus, Valtierra will finally battle against the undefeated lightweight prospect Raymond “Danger” Muratalla 14(12KO)-0, who will face with this perhaps his last fight scheduled for eight rounds before heading to harder tests in ten round bouts.
Although Valtierra is a young, motivated boxer with some mentionable triumphs, last year he was knocked out by a fighter of a much lower level than Muratalla, who will be very clear favorite to win.
In principle, if there are no more changes, the main card will begin with the second professional fight of the American Olympic silver Richard Torrez 1(1KO)-0, who will clash in a heavyweight fight against Roberto Zavala Jr. 2(2KO)-1-1.
