Kurbanov derribó y venció por decisión unánime al excampeón mundial Patrick Teixeira

Cuando fue derribado en el primer round, por un momento pareció que el excampeón mundial brasileño Patrick Teixeira 31(22KO)-4(1) podía sufrir una nueva rápida derrota como la que padeció ante Curtis Stevens en 2016, pero se levantó de la lona y poco a poco fue yendo a más en el combate tras una floja primera mitad. Con todo, esto no le sirvió para remontar el enfrentamiento ante el ruso Magomed Kurbanov 23(13KO)-0, que estuvo afilado al contragolpe y logró una merecida victoria por decisión unánime. Las cartulinas fueron excesivos 99-90 y 98-91 y un 97-92 más acorde a lo sucedido.
En el primer round un gancho de derecha al rostro (precedido por un hook de izquierda abajo) sorprendió a Teixeira y le derribó aparatosamente sobre la lona. No obstante el final del asalto no estaba lejos y el brasileño llegó al descanso y, de hecho, en el segundo round presionó y atacó más, recibiendo amenazantes curvos a la contra. Aun así, aunque Kurbanov estuvo muy preciso con sus golpes de poder aislados, una vez más el ruso tuvo una cadencia demasiado baja y confió de más en su defensa estática, lo que le podría haber pasado factura ante un oponente de más nivel.
En cualquier caso, Kurbanov no peleaba esta vez contra el inteligente y sólido Liam Smith, así que, pese a los rectos que su oponente le lanzaba, durante la primera mitad se encontró cómodo para escoger salteados cruzados, directos diestros y ganchos abajo que eran evidentemente contundentes y que en general le dieron los rounds ante un Teixeira voluntarioso pero no muy preciso y que usaba manos más tenues.
Desde pasada la mitad Teixeira pareció empezar a marcar la diferencia con sus habituales rectos ante un Kurbanov que a penas utilizaba su jab y que estaba demasiado centrado en buscar un contragolpe decisivo. Así, Teixeira empezó a acortar la diferencia en con su jab y su directo de izquierda, lo que hizo que Kurbanov intentase responder tomando la iniciativa, aunque sin apoyarse en un trabajo ofensivo lo suficientemente agresivo o activo de manos su cambio táctico no le dio más que éxitos aislados. Pese a ello, la ventaja de la primera mitad, sumada al knockdown y a un último round eficaz, le valió a Kurbanov para ganarse salir con el brazo en alto.
En principio el triunfo ante este excampeón mundial debería permitir a Kurbanov regresar a los rankings mundiales, pero aunque tuvo acciones en ataque y defensa que demostraron que posee buenas cualidades técnicas, sigue teniendo una inadecuada gestión ofensiva y táctica, lo que le hace estar inactivo de manos durante demasiados minutos y separar demasiado sus ataques. Por ello, aunque podría obtener victorias valiosas ante oponentes de buen nivel pero por debajo de la élite, todo parece indicar que cuando le llegue una pelea ante un miembro de la cumbre del peso superwélter Kurbanov se quedará corto.

When he was knocked down in the first round, it seemed for a moment that the Brazilian former world champion Patrick Teixeira 31(22KO)-4(1) could suffer another quick defeat like the one against Curtis Stevens (in 2016), but he got up from the canvas and little by little he recovered some ground in the fight after a weak first half. However, he did not won the fight against the Russian Magomed Kurbanov 23(13KO)-0, who was sharp counterpunching and achieved a deserved victory by unanimous decision. The scorecards were of 99-90, 98-91 and a score of 97-92 more in line with what happened.
In the first round a right hook to the face (preceded by a left hook down) dropped Teixeira hard. However, the end of the round was not far away and the Brazilian reached the break and, in fact, in the second round he pressed and attacked more, receiving threatening counter hooks. Still, while Kurbanov was very precise with his isolated power shots, once again the Russian had a very low punch output and relied too much on his static defense, something that could have taken its toll against a better opponent.
In any case, this time Kurbanov wasn’t fighting the smart and solid Liam Smith, so despite the straight punches of his rival, during the first half he was comfortable selecting right hooks, straight hands and hooks down that were forceful and that in general allowed him to win the rounds against Texeira, who was willful but not very precise and landed less powerful hands.
Since the half point, Teixeira began to make the difference with frequent straight punches against Kurbanov, who barely used his jab and who was too focused on looking for a decisive counterpunch. Thus, the southpaw Teixeira shortened the difference with his jab and his left hands, which made Kurbanov try to answer by taking the initiative. However, without relying on an offensive display aggressive enough, his tactical change did not give him more than isolated successes. Despite this, the advantage of the first half, added to the knockdown and an effective last round, served Kurbanov to leave the ring with his arm raised.
In principle, the victory against this former world champion should allow Kurbanov to return to the world rankings, but although he had actions in attack and defense that showed he has good technical qualities, he continues to have an inadequate offensive and tactical management, which makes him be inactive during long periods. So while he could achieve valuable victories against good opponents bellow the elite level, it looks like when he reaches a bout against a member of the summit of the super welterweight division Kurbanov will come up short.
