Zolani Tete looks to follow the WBO route to challenge unified super bantamweight champion Stephen Fulton

Last Saturday Zolani Tete, who had not achieved a relevant victory since 2018 (against Misha Aloyan), defeated with extreme easiness Jason Cunningham, a boxer ranked in three organizations and holder of the Commonwealth title. Thus, the South African Tete turned his current situation upside down, to the point that his manager Mlandeli Tengimfene is already aiming for a world championship bout for his boxer towards the end of the year.

Tete’s manager told to Bongani Magasela that he has the feeling that the WBO will push for a fight between their world champion Stephen Fulton and the South African fighter. This, according to Tengimfene, would be favored by the high rate that the sanctioning body has of Tete, who held the WBO world bantamweight belt, and by a good relatonship between Frank Warren (Tete’s promoter) and Premier Boxing Champions, the company that represents the interests of Fulton.

On the other hand, it should not be overlooked that Frank Warren’s boxers are always well treated in the WBO, organization that has four fighters of said promoter classified as number 1 and that could undoubtedly make Tete improve drastically his ranking in an upcoming update.

Although at the moment Tete is 6th in the Organization, it must be taken into account that the 1st Brandon Figueroa, the 2nd Luis Nery and the 5th Azat Hovhannisyan are in principle focused on opportunities in other organizations. Thus, it is possible that Tete, a former world champion who just has beaten a ranked WBO boxer and captured a minor title, could at least be positioned near the summit of the next month ranking.

In any case, for Tete’s manager, their ultimate goal is not to dethrone Fulton, but their idea is that it will serve to later reach a unification against the WBA-IBF monarch Murodjon Akhmadaliev.

In short, perhaps team Tete’s plans are getting carried away with excessive enthusiasm after their latest success, especially considering that Fulton and Akhmadaliev want to unify all the belts in the super bantamweight division. However, while Tete may not be able to reach his goal of fighting in a world championship this year, he could access to a title bout next year, which simply reflects the changes that can be achieved in boxing with a big win at the right time.
