More than a month has passed since Premier Boxing Champions’ last evening (Fulton-Román), a pause for the promotional conglomerate that will end this Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, United States. On that day PBC will offer through Showtime an event with three interesting televised matches: a championship between a new monarch and a former titleholder, an eliminator and a development fight for a prospect.

World championship between undefeated
The main event of the night will be a WBC world featherweight championship between Filipino monarch Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo 24(16KO)-0 and the Mexican former champion Rey Vargas 35(22KO)-0, boxers who reach this fight in very different situations. Magsayo faces his first defense after breaking Gary Russell Jr.’s lengthy and inactive reign in January 2022, while Vargas seeks a belt in a second weight class with a single tune-up fight (decision win over L. Baez in November) since a controversial victory over Tomoki Kameda three years ago.

It is true that Magsayo generated doubts in the second half of his duel against Russell (in which the Filipino had a very low punching rate), that he was losing his fight against Julio Ceja on the scorecards before achieving the knockout and that many still remember his questioned triumph over Hermosillo. But Vargas faces with this fight his first crucial test at featherweight after a reign at super bantamweight in which, apart from the duel against Kameda, he had several moments of difficulty, such as his controversial victory against Hovhannisyan and the knockdown suffered against Manzanilla.

On paper, perhaps Magsayo will be considered the favorite, especially after the great timing shown counterattacking against the speedy Russell. However, although with his one punch power he has clear options to surprise Vargas, who has suffered some knockdowns and often has his chin high, the Mexican could achieve sustained success if he is active with his legs and hands and exploits the moments were Magsayo’s work rate drastically decreases. Thus, this bout perhaps will be decided more by who can better deal with his flaws than by who imposes his qualities.

An alternative path for Figueroa
Although at this moment some talk about the super bantamweight Stephen Futlon as if he was unbeatable, many impartial observers saw Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa 22(17KO)-1-1 defeat said fighter despite two of the judges had strange and almost identical cards in favor of «Cool Boy Steph». Be that as it may, Figueroa’s «defeat» has forced him to follow an alternative path away from the super bantamweight division, so this Saturday he will try to become a mandatory challenger for the winner of the match Magsayo-Vargas by fighting in a WBC featherweight eliminator against Carlos Castro. 27(12KO)-1.

Someone should ask the Council how a loss in a super bantamweight semifinal eliminator qualifies for a featherweight eliminator, but the fact is that after the setback against Luis Nery (a questionable result too), Castro will seek, like Figueroa, a new way to reach a world title in a higher division.

Although Castro is a brave boxer who has good technique, the favorite in the fight will be Figueroa, since his punch output is enormous, so much so that with it he even overwhelmed at times a boxer with endless energies like Fulton. For this reason, it seems very possible that, if Figueroa manages to offer his unbearable rhythm and creates a battle of attrition, he can prevail over Castro, who may find good opportunities to counter but who could have a crucial disadvantage by his smaller size and by having less power.

Change of rival for “The Ghost”
The Showtime broadcast was originally going to kick off with a lightweight fight between American Frank “The Ghost” Martin 15(11KO)-0 and Panamanian Ricardo “El Científico” Núñez 23(21KO)-3(2). However, visa problems have prevented Núñez from taking part in this fight, entering the bout as a late substitute a boxer with a higher level. Martin will finally face the skilled Dominican Jackson Maríñez 19(7KO)-2(1), better known for his great performance, which ended in a controversial defeat, against Rolando Romero.

In any case, although Maríñez is a more than good replacement, Martin will be the clear favorite to win. The undefeated is a prospect with great qualities, with a good amateur career (he was winner of the Golden Gloves defeating Vergil Ortiz) and with remarkable projection, so it is to be assumed that, if he does not make serious tactical or strategic mistakes, he will be able to beat Maríñez, who has not fought since his knockout defeat against Commey in February 2021.

Showtime will air these three bouts on Saturday from 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT, 2:00 a.m. in UK Time.
