Munguía mostró sus brechas en mal inicio pero acabó venciendo en el quinto round a Kelly

El exaspirante mundial superwélter Jimmy “Kilrain” Kelly 26(10KO)-3(2) creó un espejismo durante cuatro rounds, en los que se puso por delante haciendo parecer que tenía un nivel superior al que verdaderamente posee. Sin embargo, en el quinto asalto la pegada del excampeón mundial Jaime Munguía 40(32KO)-0 devolvió a la realidad a Kelly y al combate, haciéndose con la victoria.
En ningún momento de su carrera Kelly había sido ni remotamente tan astuto y eficaz como en el arranque de su combate ante Munguía, caminando ágilmente antes de impactar secos jabs o ganchos zurdos que alcanzaron claramente a su rival, demasiado centrado en generar daños. De todos modos, en el éxito de Kelly jugó enteramente a su favor la falta de reflejos y de inteligencia de ring de Munguía, que cometió múltiples errores y descuidos, como por ejemplo detenerse en la distancia media sin tomar una decisión o dar por terminada una ofensiva cuando recibía el primer puño.
De ese modo, Kelly empezó a generar dudas a Munguía, que acostumbrado a vapulear a oponentes sencillos no se mostró cómodo ante un adversario que había superado las expectativas hasta ese momento. No obstante, Munguía tenía tantísima ventaja en potencia y peso tras la rehidratación que sólo necesitaba insistir más, aunque fuese a la desesperada, para lograr un puño que rompiese el encuentro.
Así, el mexicano probó, falló y volvió a probar, insistiendo en su agresivo e impreciso esfuerzo hasta que en el quinto round un gancho zurdo en corta sorprendió a Kelly y le tiró al tapiz. Con “Kilrain” habiendo dado la primera muestra de flaqueza, el combate estaba ya sentenciando: en la reanudación Munguía se lanzó sobre su adversario sacando combinaciones y por dos veces derribó a Kelly, siendo la segunda cuenta sucedida por la detención arbitral.
Los defectos mostrados por Munguía ilustraron de forma muy clara cuál fue el motivo de que su equipo no quisiese aceptar las peleas obligatorias ante Andrade y Alimkhanuly, puesto que estos boxeadores con muchísimo mayores cualidades que Kelly podrían haberle generado al invicto enormes complicaciones. Sea como sea, la presión se empieza a acumular en Munguía para que de una vez por todas se mida a un peso medio de élite, y ya incluso analistas estadounidenses que trabajan para DAZN han demandado que el mexicano dé un paso adelante en este sentido.
De todos modos, visto lo visto en cuanto a su selección de oponentes, no se debe ser demasiado optimista respecto a los próximos adversarios de Munguía.
Y es que el púgil, que regresará al peso medio, señaló poco antes de su combate contra Kelly que su objetivo es esperar a que Golovkin pelee y pierda contra Canelo para poder enfrentarse al kazajo. Dicho de otro modo, la idea más arriesgada de Munguía para ir más allá en su carrera en estos momentos es aguardar a que un muy veterano “GGG” y al borde del retiro sea castigado en el peso supermedio por Canelo para usarlo como un escalón cuando ya no supone un riesgo ni remotamente tan grande como hace unos años…

Former super welterweight world challenger Jimmy “Kilrain” Kelly 26(10KO)-3(2) created a mirage for four rounds, in which he made it appear that he had a higher level than he truly possesses. However, in the fifth round, the power of former world champion Jaime Munguía 40(32KO)-0 brought Kelly and the fight back to reality, achieving the victory.
Never in his career had Kelly been remotely as astute and effective as at the start of his fight against Munguía, walking nimbly before landing sharp jabs or left hooks that clearly hit his opponent, who was too focused on generating damage. In any case, Munguía’s lack of reflexes and ring intelligence played entirely in Kelly’s favor, as the Mexican made multiple mistakes, such as stopping in the middle distance without making a decision or considering ended the offensives of his opponent when he received the first punch.
In this way, Kelly began to generate doubts to Munguía who, accustomed to beating easy opponents, did not seem comfortable against a boxer who had exceeded expectations up to that moment. However, Munguía had so much advantage in power and weight after rehydration that he only needed to insist more, even if it was desperately, to land a punch that could break the match.
Thus, the Mexican tried, failed and tried again, insisting on his aggressive and imprecise effort until in the fifth round a left hook at close range surprised Kelly and knocked him to the mat. With «Kilrain» having shown weakness, the fight was over: in the resumption Munguía charged against his opponent throwing combinations and knocking down Kelly twice. The second count was succeeded by the referee’s stoppage.
The flaws showed by Munguía illustrated very clearly why his team did not want to accept the mandatory fights against Andrade and Alimkhanuly, since these boxers with much greater qualities than Kelly could have generated huge complications to the undefeated. Be that as it may, the pressure is beginning to accumulate on Munguía for not facing elite middleweight boxers, and even members of the DAZN broadcast asked the Mexican to take a step forward in this regard.
In any case, taking into account which has been his selection of opponents, its difficult to be too optimistic about Munguía’s next rivals.
The former champion, who will return to middleweight after this bout, said before his fight against Kelly that his objective is to wait for Golovkin to fight and lose against Canelo in order to face the Kazakh. In other words, Munguía’s more risky plan to go further in his career is to wait for the very veteran and, on the verge of retirement, «GGG» to be punished at super middleweight by Canelo to use him as a stepping stone when he is no longer remotely as big a threat as he was a few years ago…
