Edgar Berlanga further disappointed with ineffective conservative boxing, a bite and a robbery over Roamer Angulo

Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York, USA. Super middleweight.

After proving unable to effectively chase mobile fighters, American super middleweight Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga 20(16KO)-0 attempted to imitate them against Colombian Roamer Alexis Angulo 27(23KO)-3(1), putting up a poor performance lacking of forcefulness. In any case, if his boxing had only been bad, it would not have been so serious, since Berlanga showed also an atrociously unsportsmanlike attitude.

As if all this were not enough, despite the fact that Angulo’s victory by one round or a draw would have been perfectly justifiable, the judges gave corrupt scorecards of embarrassing double 99-91 and one 98-92 to protect once again Berlanga.

This time Berlanga did not fought a rival moving around the ring, but rather a seasoned boxer who tried to put pressure on him with power shots. Faced with this approach, the undefeated Berlanga surprisingly did not battle in the center of the ring, but instead gave up the initiative and walked, waiting for the moment to connect his hands, but he did not throw his shots with too much fluidity and had a limited punch output. For his part, Angulo did not have a great attacking rhythm, so “The Chosen One” was able to reposition himself, jab and land some left hooks, but the Colombian in his eventual attacks connected the most significant punches with hard hooks or uppercuts, causing a nosebleed on the favorite.

It was generally quite a frustrating match to watch, as Berlanga, who has a good punch, barely threw power shots and focused on jabbing despite not being a technical boxer and having a stiff and frontal opponent. As for, Angulo he hit his rival with sporadic hard punches but his advance was slow and predictable, his ring cut was not firm enough and several of his few hands just hit the air.

As if all this were not enough to tarnish the duel, Berlanga tried to bite Angulo’s neck/face in the seventh round, action for which he ceased to be simply a disappointing boxer to become directly a pathetic man.

Be that as it may, although Berlanga was frustrated and was unable to react well at short range and did not even dare trying to hold his ground, the fight was quite close, since at times the Colombian’s uppercuts and hooks disappeared and the local used his few jabs to win rounds. Still, although the consensus is that the fight should have been a draw, or won by one point by one of the fighters, the judges did not try to look like impartial professionals.

Against a veteran boxer who had blocking as his only defensive resource, Berlanga had a great opportunity to try to win clearly and, at least, confuse a little about his level. But on the contrary he chose a wrong tactic, executed it poorly, was hit by much stronger punches than he even tried to land and he didn’t try to adjust or change his strategy. All this was also crowned with an attempted bite and a deliberate headbutt after the final bell.

In short, Berlanga has once again dodged a bullet in terms of suffering his first defeat thanks to the invaluable help of the judges, but he is regressing very seriously in his boxing and he is managing the mental part of the fights worse. So if he now can’t even beat the veteran stepping stones, rather than what his goal might be at super middleweight, the central question has become who will be the first to defeat him and throw him away from the top 15.
