Mayor Sports Center, Guadalajara, Mexico. WBA world female super bantamweight championship. Rivas’ first defense.

After more than two years without fighting, the Venezuelan world titlist Mayerlín “La Monita” Rivas 17(11KO)-4-2 could have been affected by the ring rust despite the fact that she was the clear favorite to win the bout. However, Rivas looked in great shape and severely punished the Mexican challenger Karina “La Bella” Fernández 17(3KO)-7(1)-1 until dealing her the first stoppage defeat in the fourth round.

As it was an excellent opportunity for her career, Fernandez went all out, but she rushed in and exposed her face, so the explosive and skillful Rivas was able to counter dangerously before knocking her opponent down with a counter right hook still in the first round. With great courage, Fernández continued trying to put pressure, although in her advance head first, despite landing some hooks, she missed many hands due to the dodges of the more technical Rivas, who landed hard hooks and uppercuts counterpunching.

In the third round Fernandez suffered a broken nose and a very serious nosebleed that required the doctor’s revision. This was not the only inspection by the doctor, since at the beginning of the fourth round he again checked Fernández’s nose, deciding she was in no condition to continue.

Before this fight it was evident that there were interesting unifications to be made on the super bantamweight division, something that is now even more obvious. In particular, a fight between Rivas and the WBC super bantamweight champion, the Mexican Yamileth Mercado, could be a very good fight. If they faced each other, they would undoubtedly fight for the number 1 in the division. However, for this or other clashes between the elite materializing, it will be necessary, above all, that Eddie Hearn maintains with determination his plan to establish undisputed champions in the female divisions.
