Joshua Buatsi venció oscilante e igualada eliminatoria WBA del peso semipesado ante “Spider” Richards

Según va subiendo escalones de dificultad, el olímpico británico Joshua Buatsi 16(13KO)-0 va ganando cada vez con menos diferencia, va pasando mayores dificultades y parece cada vez más tácticamente inconsistente. Con todo, Buatsi logró vencer trabajadamente su eliminatoria ante Craig “Spider” Richards 17(10KO)-3-1 por ajustada decisión unánime y tarjetas acertadas de doble 115-113 y un 116-112.
En el primer asalto Buatsi no se equivocó en su elección estrategia, sino que tiró el jab rápido a la vez que acortó la distancia buscando duros golpes de poder curvos, encerrando e incomodando a su rival. Con todo, pronto Buatsi perdió la intensidad necesaria y tuvo prolongados momentos de pausa que permitieron a Richards sacar su largo jab, peligrosas derechas rectas y certeras contras con golpes curvos. Así, pese a su buen arranque y a ciertos intercambios útiles en corta, Buatsi terminó viéndose otra vez en la pelea que más interesaba a su oponente.
En el cuarto asalto duros intercambios mostraron de nuevo que el camino del éxito para el invicto pasaba por más acción y trabajo en corta, y en el quinto descargó buenos golpes de poder en hook contra Richards. Aun así, aunque Buatsi fue alejándose en las tarjetas siguió dejando espacios de pelea táctica en los que permitía a “Spider” estabilizarse y sacar amenazantes golpes rectos y uppercuts, uno de los cuales dañó al olímpico y le obligó a agarrarse en un octavo asalto con muy buenos cruces de golpes.
La pelea continuó con Richards encontrando golpes claros en los momentos tácticos antes de ser superado en las cuerdas por esporádicas explosivas combinaciones de Buatsi, que consiguió sacudir a su contrincante en el décimo episodio. Finalmente, consciente de que estaba por detrás, Richards trató de tomar la iniciativa en el undécimo round y de atacar con agresividad, pero también recibió contras certeras, y en el último round los boxeadores no lograron éxitos cruciales en los desesperados intercambios.
Teóricamente esta eliminatoria debería situar a Buatsi inmediatamente por debajo de Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez, ganador de otra eliminatoria WBA la semana pasada. Así, habrá que esperar a que se decida cuál será el siguiente paso del campeón semipesado Dmitriy Bivol, y a que la WBA aclare de alguna u otra manera el estado de su división, para ver cuándo y en qué orden Ramírez y Buatsi podrán aspirar al mundial o si tendrán que pelear entre ellos para decidirlo.

As he steps up in difficulty, the British Olympian Joshua Buatsi 16(13KO)-0 is winning with less difference, he is struggling more and seems more and more tactically inconsistent. All in all, Buatsi managed to win his eliminator against Craig “Spider” Richards 17(10KO)-3-1 by a narrow unanimous decision and scorecards of double 115-113 and one 116-112.
In the first round Buatsi did not make a mistake in his tactical choice, since he threw the jab fast while closing the distance looking for hard power shots, cornering and making uncomfortable his opponent. However, Buatsi soon lost the necessary intensity and had long moments of pause that allowed Richards to throw his long jab, dangerous straight right hands and accurate counters with hooks and uppercuts. Thus, despite his good start and some useful exchanges at close range, Buatsi ended up again in the fight most convenient to his opponent.
In the fourth round tough exchanges showed again that the path to success for the undefeated lay through more action and working at close range, and in the fifth he threw some good power punches against Richards. Even so, although Buatsi was winning on the cards, he continued to have moments of tactical fight in which he allowed “Spider” to stabilize his boxing and land threatening straight punches and uppercuts, one of which hurt the Olympian and forced him to hold and try to answer in hard exchanges in the eighth round.
The fight continued with Richards finding clear shots in the tactical lapses before being outworked on the ropes by sporadic explosive combinations from Buatsi, who managed to shake his opponent in the tenth round. Finally aware that he was behind in the scorecards, Richards tried to take the initiative in the eleventh round and attack aggressively, but he received accurate counters, and in the final round there weren’t crucial successes for the fighters in the desperate exchanges.
Theoretically this eliminator should place Buatsi just below Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez, winner of another WBA eliminator last week. Thus, we will have to wait for the confirmation of the next step for the light heavyweight champion Dmitriy Bivol, and for the WBA to clarify in one way or another the status of their division, to see when and in what order Ramírez and Buatsi will be able to access the world championship, or whether they will have to fight each other to decide it.
