Los mejores combates del fin de semana (5-7/5/2022)

Lógicamente, en esta semana muchos no mirarán más allá del esperado cartel Canelo-Bivol y de su respaldo, más aún no habiendo otras mayúsculas pugnas que destacar en las jornadas. Sin embargo, antes de que dicho evento se inicie se producirán algunos otros enfrentamientos destacables que abordamos a continuación en el artículo de Los mejores combates.
Jueves 5 de mayo
Desde el Rebel Entertainment Complex de Toronto, Canadá, DAZN emitirá un evento de la compañía Lee Baxter Promotions, cartelera que estará encabezada por el choque del peso superpluma entre los jóvenes mexicanos Bryan “Latino” Acosta 16(5KO)-0 y Benito “Canelito” Sánchez García 15(3KO)-5(2)-2. El imbatido Acosta es un prospecto interesante que ha dejado varias actuaciones que sugieren potencial, mientras que Sánchez, de sólo 21 años, viene de un 2021 que ha sido el mejor de su carrera hasta el momento. Así que, sin ser ninguno de los dos grandes pegadores, debería ser un combate contendido y quizás entretenido en el que el invicto será igualmente favorito para imponerse.
En el respaldo, el joven irlandés de extensa carrera amateur Lee Reeves 8(6KO)-1 afrontará en el peso superligero su primer duelo a ocho rounds, y su mayor test hasta la fecha, ante el mexicano Sebastián “El Verdugo” Díaz 17(13KO)-4(2)-1, quien en su día empató ante el duro Carlos “Fino” Ruiz. No obstante, Díaz sólo ha combatido una vez en los últimos cuatro años.
Viernes 6 de mayo
Los dos mayores títulos que se pondrán en juego el viernes serán cinturones de Europa femeninos, aunque en ambos casos los campeonatos tendrán una clara favorita.
Uno de los duelos, teóricamente emitido a través de YouTube, se producirá en The Hangar Events Venue en Wolverhampton, Reino Unido, siendo las coaspirantes al título wélter vacante la local Kirstie “Bavvo” Bavington 5(2KO)-2-2 y la húngara Timea Belik 5(2KO)-4(1). Dado que Bavington sufrió su última derrota ante la destacada prospecta Sandy Ryan y posteriormente venció contra pronóstico a la invicta April Hunter (quien participó en veladas de Matchroom), es de esperar su victoria ante una oponente modesta y que ha perdido todos sus combates de relieve.
El otro campeonato europeo será por el título vacante del peso minimosca y se desarrollará en la Salle Edgar-Quinet de Calais, Francia, siendo clara favorita la local Cassandra Crevecoeur 4(0KO)-0, que fue plata nacional como amateur. Su contrincante será la rumana Gabriela Timar 6(2KO)-0, boxeadora invicta pero que sólo se ha medido a boxeadoras de nivel bajo y con récord negativo.
Otra de las peleas titulares de la jornada será un campeonato nacional argentino del peso semipesado que será televisado por TyC Sports y que tendrá lugar en el recinto del Club Atlético Peñarol en Mar del Plata, Argentina. Siguiendo la tendencia, en este combate también habrá un claro favorito, puesto que el invicto titular Franco Acosta 10(7KO)-0 viene de un importante éxito, parece estar en un buen momento y tiene más experiencia y está más rodado que su rival Néstor Campos 5(4KO)-2. De todos modos, es justo decir que este último llega de sus dos mayores victorias, posee pegada y quizás pueda ofrecer un importante esfuerzo.
Por otro lado, los combates mejor emparejados serán dos que se disputarán, respectivamente, en Reino Unido y Estados Unidos. Respecto al primero, desde el Crowne Plaza Hotel de Glasgow, emitido por Fightzone, el competente pegador congoleño del peso superligero Marios Matamba 12(10KO)-1 disputará su primer enfrentamiento fuera de Sudáfrica (donde ha desarrollado su carrera) pugnando contra el británico Kane Gardner 13(7KO)-2, un púgil que no ha alcanzado peleas titulares todavía y que no ha tenido un avance perfecto pero que es joven y tiene aspiraciones.
En cuanto al evento estadounidense, en el Club Venetian Banquet Center de Madison Heights, los locales Reggie Harris Jr. 6(3KO)-0 y Rashid Stevens 6(5KO)-0 se verán las caras en un duelo de invictos peso wélter. Harris es 7 años más joven y ha tenido mejores enfrentamientos como profesional, pero Stevens es un zurdo con una buena carrera amateur, en la que llegó a ser oro en los Golden Gloves.
Finalmente en cuanto al viernes, en el Rhythm City Casino de Davenport, Estados Unidos, se producirá una pelea del peso superpluma con ciertos interés, en la cual el invicto Kevin Taylor Mangune 6(5KO)-0 afrontará su mayor prueba ante Joe Pérez 15(10KO)-6(1)-3, que llega de sacar un empate contra pronóstico ante un imbatido con más experiencia que Taylor, el joven Adrián “Bam Bam” Corona.
Sábado 7 de mayo
El gran combate del sábado, evidentemente, será el campeonato mundial WBA del peso semipesado entre el monarca Dmitriy Bivol y Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez.

En el respaldo se producirán dos peleas del peso superligero con alicientes, siendo una entre el hábil Montana Love y el tenaz Gabriel Valenzuela y la otra entre el plata olímpico Shakhram Giyasov y el pegador Christian Gómez. Además, el peso pesado Zhilei Zhang aguardará una eliminatoria final IBF peleando en un rodaje ante el sustituto Scott Alexander.

El Canelo-Bivol no será el único enfrentamiento mundialista del día, ya que en la Salle Gayant de Douai, Francia, la monarca WBO del peso supergallo Segolene Lefebvre 15(1KO)-0 expondrá su corona ante la española Melania Sorroche 18(6KO)-2(1)-2. Como la local es una buena e invicta boxeadora que ha sumado triunfos ante rivales de nivel, y además cuenta con un triunfo ante una Ana María Lozano que noqueó a Sorroche, Lefevbre partirá como favorita. No obstante, en su última pelea Lefebvre tuvo problemas con la mexicana Paulette Valenzuela y Sorroche es una púgil muy agresiva, con experiencia internacional (ofreció una dura pelea a la campeona Mayerlín Rivas) y que posee amenazante pegada, por lo que la francesa necesitará su mejor versión si quiere evitar verse sorprendida.
Por otro lado, también destaca la primera prueba internacional para el invicto prospecto argentino del peso crucero Yamil Peralta 13(6KO)-0, un púgil dos veces olímpico que se desplazará hasta el Centre 200 de Sydney, Canadá, para medirse al noqueador local Ryan Rozicki 14(14KO)-1, que sufrió su única derrota a los puntos de forma ajustada ante un Óscar Rivas que tenía 8 kg de ventaja en peso (fue en el “campeonato” inaugural del peso puente). Así, peleando un prometedor púgil con gran carrera amateur que disputa un gran paso adelante y otro que ha demostrado su nivel en una importante pelea en la que lo tenía todo en contra, este parece un abierto y excelente emparejamiento entre boxeadores con pegada y ambición.
Además, en la jornada se producirá una velada desde Colonia, Alemania, organizada por Wasserman y Probellum, que contará en su combate principal con la participación de un invicto 4º IBF del peso medio como Denis Radovan 15(7KO)-0-1. De todas formas, aunque hasta aquí todo parece prometedor, Radovan se enfrentará a una víctima propiciatoria como el veterano Rafael Bejarán 30(16KO)-6(4)-1, que ha padecido derrotas rápidas en sus últimos duelos significativos y que difícilmente podrá generar dificultades serias al imbatido prospecto.
Mencionados estos combates, en el sábado se pueden destacar estos otros duelos:
-En la Sala Constantin Jude de Timisoara, Rumanía, el peso superwélter local Flavius Biea 20(10KO)-1(1) tratará de lograr una de sus mayores victorias ante el argentino Ricardo Rubén Villalba 20(8KO)-5(3)-1, excampeón de su país que el pasado año logró un triunfo en Rusia ante Edgar Ghukasyan.
-En el Hialeah Park Racing & Casino de Hialeah, Estados Unidos, el 15º WBO del peso crucero David Light 17(10KO)-0 pondrá fin a un año y medio de inactividad y debutará en territorio estadounidense enfrentándose al local Anthony Martínez 12(11KO)-1. En el respaldo el peso pesado cubano Lenier Pero 6(3KO)-0 disputará su primer combate pactado a diez rounds contra Héctor Pérez 7(3KO)-4(1).
-En el Royal International Convention Centre de Bowen Hills, Australia, los pesos cruceros Benjamin Kelleher 15(4KO)-4(3)-2 y Peter Sa’lesui 9(7KO)-0-1 disputarán una revancha de su choque de marzo, en el que ganó Sa’lesui por ajustada decisión mayoritaria.
-En el Suamlum Night Bazaar de Bangkok, Tailandia, se producirá un choque bien emparejado y emitido por YouTube entre los peso mosca Tanes Ongjunta 9(4KO)-1(1) y Jakrawut Majungoen 41(20KO)-1(1)-1.
-En el Nissan Arena de Nathan, Australia, el peso supermedio mexicano César Tapia 13(8KO)-0 tratará de acceder al ranking WBA y terminar con 14 meses de inactividad peleando contra el veterano argentino Rolando Mansilla 18(8KO)-9(4)-1.
-En Pezenas, Francia, el invicto Jaouad Belmehdi 14(6KO)-0-3 afrontará una nueva pelea de desarrollo enfrentándose en el peso superligero al encajador italiano, cuatro veces aspirante al título nacional, Luca Maccaroni 17(5KO)-8-4.

Logically, many will not look beyond the long-awaited Canelo-Bivol and its support, even more so as there are no other major fights to highlight in this weekend. However, before that event kicks off there will be a few other matches that worth being mentioned and that we will cover below in this article.
Thursday, May 5
From the Rebel Entertainment Complex in Toronto, Canada, DAZN will broadcast a Lee Baxter Promotions event that will be headlined by the super featherweight clash between the young Mexicans Bryan «Latino» Acosta 16(5KO)-0 and Benito «Canelito ” Sanchez Garcia 15(3KO)-5(2)-2. The unbeaten Acosta is an interesting prospect who has offered some performances that suggest potential, while Sánchez, just 21, is coming from a 2021 season that has been the best in his career. So, without being neither of the two big punchers, it should be a contested and perhaps entertaining bout in which the undefeated will be favorite to win.
In the support, the young Irishman with good amateur career Lee Reeves 8(6KO)-1 will face his first eight-rounder, and his biggest test to date, in a super lightweight fight against the Mexican Sebastián «El Verdugo» Díaz 17(13KO)-4(2)-1, who in the past drew against the tough Carlos “Fino” Ruiz. However, Diaz has only fought once in the last four years.
Friday, May 6
The two biggest titles that will be put at stake on Friday will be female European belts, although in both cases the championships will have a clear favorite.
One of the duels, theoretically broadcast through YouTube, will take place at The Hangar Events Venue in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom. The challengers for the vacant welterweight title will be the local Kirstie «Bavvo» Bavington 5(2KO)-2-2 and the Hungarian Timea Belik 5(2KO)-4(1). Given that Bavington suffered her last loss to a top prospect as Sandy Ryan and subsequently beat by upset the undefeated April Hunter (who participated in Matchroom evenings), her victory is to be expected against an opponent who has lost all of her notable bouts.
The other European championship will be for the vacant light flyweight title and will take place at the Salle Edgar-Quinet in Calais, France, with the local Cassandra Crevecoeur 4(0KO)-0, national silver medalist, being the clear favorite. Her opponent will be the Romanian Gabriela Timar 6(2KO)-0, an unbeaten boxer but who has only faced low-level rivals with negative record.
Another of the title fights of the day will be an Argentine national light heavyweight championship that will be televised by TyC Sports from the Club Atlético Peñarol in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Following the trend, in this fight there will also be a clear favorite, since the undefeated titleholder Franco Acosta 10(7KO)-0 is coming off an important success, seems to be in a good moment and has more experience than Néstor Campos 5(4KO)-2. Still, it’s fair to say that the latter has obtained his two biggest wins in his last fight, that he has power and that he may be able to put up a serious effort.
On the other hand, perhaps the best matched duels of the day will be two that will take place, respectively, in the United Kingdom and the United States. Regarding the first, from the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow, broadcast by Fightzone, the Congolese super lightweight puncher Marios Matamba 12(10KO)-1 will have his first bout outside of South Africa (where he has developed his career) fighting against the British Kane Gardner 13(7KO)-2, a fighter who has not reached title fights yet and who has not had a perfect advance but who is young and has aspirations.
As for the American event, at the Venetian Banquet Center Club in Madison Heights, the locals Reggie Harris Jr. 6(3KO)-0 and Rashid Stevens 6(5KO)-0 will face each other in a welterweight duel between undefeated boxers. Harris is 7 years younger and has had better fights as a pro, but Stevens is a southpaw with a good amateur career, in which he won the Golden Gloves.
Finally as for Friday, at the Rhythm City Casino in Davenport, United States, there will be a super featherweight fight with some interest, in which the undefeated Kevin Taylor Mangune 6(5KO)-0 will face his biggest test against Joe Pérez 15(10KO)-6(1)-3, who comes from drawing against an undefeated with more experience than Taylor, the young Adrián “Bam Bam” Corona.
Saturday, May 7
The biggest fight on Saturday, obviously, will be the WBA light heavyweight world championship between the titlist Dmitriy Bivol and Saúl «Canelo» Álvarez. Read more following the link.
In the undercard there will be two interesting super lightweight fights, one between the skillful Montana Love and the tenacious Gabriel Valenzuela and the other between the Olympic silver medalist Shakhram Giyasov and the puncher Christian Gómez. Additionally, heavyweight Zhilei Zhang will await an IBF final eliminator by fighting in a tune-up against substitute Scott Alexander. Read more following the link.
The fight Canelo-Bivol will not be the only world championship of the day, since at the Salle Gayant in Douai, France, the WBO super bantamweight champion Segolene Lefebvre 15(1KO)-0 will defend her crown against the Spaniard Melania Sorroche 18(6KO )-2(1)-2. As the local is a good and undefeated boxer who has achieved wins against good rivals, and also has a win against Ana María Lozano (who knocked out Sorroche), Lefevbre will be favorite. However, in her last fight Lefebvre had problems with the Mexican Paulette Valenzuela and Sorroche is a very aggressive fighter, with international experience (she offered a tough fight to the champion Mayerlín Rivas) and has a threatening punching power, so the Frenchwoman will need her best version if she wants to avoid defeat.
On the other hand, also stands out the first international test for the Argentine cruiserweight prospect Yamil Peralta 13(6KO)-0, a two-time Olympian who will travel to the Center 200 in Sydney, Canada, to face the local puncher Ryan Rozicki 14(14KO)-1, who suffered his only loss on points in a close fight against a boxer with 8 kg (17 lb) of weight advantage as Óscar Rivas (it was in the inaugural bridgerweight “championship”). Thus, clashing a promising boxer with a great amateur career against a fighter that has shown his level in a great bout in which everything was against him, this seems an excellently matched fight between boxers with punch and ambition.
In this day there will be an evening from Cologne, Germany, organized by Wasserman and Probellum, which will have in its main event an undefeated as Denis Radovan 15(7KO)-0-1, 4th IBF middleweight. However, Radovan will face the veteran Rafael Bejarán 30(16KO)-6(4)-1, who has suffered quick defeats in his last important duels and who will hardly be able to generate serious difficulties to the unbeaten prospect.
On Saturday these other duels can be highlighted:
-At the Constantin Jude Hall in Timisoara, Romania, local super welterweight Flavius Biea 20(10KO)-1(1) will try to achieve one of his biggest victories against Argentine Ricardo Rubén Villalba 20(8KO)-5(3)-1, former national champion who last year won in Russia against Edgar Ghukasyan.
-At Hialeah Park Racing & Casino in Hialeah, United States, the 15th WBO cruiserweight David Light 17(10KO)-0 will put an end to a year and a half of inactivity, and will debut on US, facing local Anthony Martínez 12(11KO)-1. In the support, Cuban heavyweight Lenier Pero 6(3KO)-0 will have his first ten-round fight against Héctor Pérez 7(3KO)-4(1).
-At the Royal International Convention Center in Bowen Hills, Australia, cruiserweights Benjamin Kelleher 15(4KO)-4(3)-2 and Peter Sa’lesui 9(7KO)-0-1 will fight in a rematch of their March clash, in which Sa’lesui won by a close majority decision.
-At Suamlum Night Bazaar in Bangkok, Thailand, there will be a well-matched flyweight clash, broadcasted through YouTube, between Tanes Ongjunta 9(4KO)-1(1) and Jakrawut Majungoen 41(20KO)-1(1)-1.
-At the Nissan Arena in Nathan, Australia, Mexican super middleweight César Tapia 13(8KO)-0 will try to access the WBA ranking and end 14 months of inactivity fighting against the Argentine veteran Rolando Mansilla 18(8KO)-9(4)-1.
-In Pezenas, France, the undefeated super lightweight Jaouad Belmehdi 14(6KO)-0-3 will face a new development fight against the resistant Italian, four times national title challenger, Luca Maccaroni 17(5KO)-8-4.
