El cinturón IBF supergallo, cuya última dueña fue Daniela Bermúdez, ya tiene una nueva poseedora, dado que la australiana Cherneka Johnson 13(6KO)-1 ha derrotado este miércoles a la mexicana Melissa Esquivel 12(4KO)-2-1 en un duelo por el título vacante. La decisión de los jueces fue dividida, siendo las cartulinas de 96-95 para Esquivel y de 96-94 y 97-93 para Johnson.
El juego de piernas de Johnson era superior y además tenía mejor técnica, así que al comienzo pudo llegar con su jab y evitar bastantes de los toscos volados lanzados por una fuerte pero imprecisa Esquivel. Con todo, aunque Johnson también encontró huecos para astutas contras, cuando las acciones empezaron a embarrarse y ambas se situaron crecientemente en la distancia corta la mexicana Esquivel evidenció su peligro con duros hooks, destacando sus ganchos zurdos arriba en el sexto round.
De todos modos, aunque ambas tuvieron sus momentos y fueron movidas ligeramente por golpes de poder en una pelea difícil de puntuar por la igualdad y los numerosos agarres, Johnson tuvo en líneas generales más constancia en su trabajo con el jab y puso algo más de atención a las tareas defensivas. Además, aprovechando su velocidad de manos, impactó nítidos directos diestros y cruzados de esta misma mano que pudieron decantar rounds muy parejos. Por ello, cuando Johnson encontró un segundo aire al final y estuvo más afilada en la distancia larga y más explosiva en corta, terminó asegurándose el triunfo pese a los voluntariosos esfuerzos de la visitante.
Con su coronación, Johnson se une en el trono de la división a las titulares Mayerlín Rivas (WBA), Yamileth Mercado (WBC) y Segolene Lefebvre (WBO), entre las cuales quizás será considerada el eslabón débil en la cadena de campeonas teniendo en cuenta su menor experiencia de calidad y que en sus dos mayores peleas (O’Connell y Esquivel) se ha visto inmersa en peleas muy igualadas y decididas por mínimo margen.

The IBF super bantamweight crown, whose last holder was Daniela Bermúdez, has a new owner, since the Australian Cherneka Johnson 13(6KO)-1 defeated the Mexican Melissa Esquivel 12(4KO)-2-1 in a duel for the vacant title on Wednesday. The decision of the judges was split, with scorecards of 96-95 for Esquivel and 96-94 and 97-93 for Johnson.
Johnson’s footwork is superior and she also has better technique, so she was able to hit with her jab early and avoid quite a few of the wide overhands thrown by a strong but inaccurate Esquivel. All in all, although Johnson also found opportunities for smart counters, when the actions began to get messy and both were increasingly in the short distance, the Mexican Esquivel showed her danger with hard hooks, standing out her left hooks to the head in the sixth round.
However, although both had their moments and were shook slightly by power shots in a fight that was difficult to score due to the even effort of the boxers and the numerous clinches, Johnson was generally more consistent in her work with the jab and paid a little more attention to her defense. Also, taking advantage of her hand speed, she landed clear right overhands that served her to win very even rounds. So when Johnson found a second wind at the end and was sharper from long distance and more explosive at close range, she secured the win despite the visitor’s brave attacks.
With her coronation, Johnson joins titleholders Mayerlín Rivas (WBA), Yamileth Mercado (WBC) and Segolene Lefebvre (WBO) on the division throne. Among these boxers, Johnson will perhaps be seen as the weak link in the chain of champions considering that she has less quality experience and that in her two biggest fights (O’Connell and Esquivel) she has been immersed in very close fights decided by narrow margin.
