El Gwynne-Willis no fue ni mucho menos la única buena pelea del evento de MTK Global, puesto que, entre otras, su semifondo fue también una excelente pugna. En ella, el campeón de Inglaterra del peso superwélter Sam Gilley 14(7KO)-1 cumplió con los pronósticos y venció al retador imbatido Drew Brown 12(1KO)-1(1), si bien se tuvo que aplicar a fondo para lograr anotarse el KOT en el noveno asalto sobre un muy valiente rival.
El retador Brown no se vio amedrentado por estar en su primer duelo titular y ante su mayor oponente hasta la fecha, sino que salió dispuesto a ofrecer guerra, acortando la distancia y sacando con gran tenacidad combinaciones de curvos que llegaron bien contra Gilley. Este último también tuvo sus momentos e impactó algunas derechas rectas que mostraron su pegada, pero Brown pareció tener un mejor comienzo.
No obstante, Gilley ajustó, primero agarrándose para reducir los momentos cuerpo a cuerpo, posteriormente tratando de usar más su jab y su directo desde la distancia media y finalmente tratando de anticiparse tomando la iniciativa. Así, Gilley puso las bases para cambiar la situación, llegando en el quinto asalto con un potente directo y un uppercut que movieron a su oponente.
Brown contestó a las dificultades con más coraje y esfuerzo tratando de batallar en corta pero, aunque tuvo instantes de eficaz presión, cayó muchas veces en clinches, volvió a recibir peligrosos derechazos a la contra y se estaba cansando visiblemente. Por ello, después de que una creciente cantidad de agarres embarrasen un poco el choque, en el octavo round Gilley impactó duros hooks en intercambios que dañaron a Brown, quien siguió guerreando con mucha valentía en ese asalto pero que en el noveno round recibió un derechazo que le estremeció terriblemente. El púgil fue sostenido por las cuerdas (debió recibir entonces cuenta) y después de un nuevo directo fue derribado en la lona a la vez que el árbitro detenía el combate.
Aunque tenía una ventaja en experiencia respecto a su oponente, Gilley es un boxeador todavía joven y con menos de veinte combates, por lo que, además de la moral que la habrá dado la contundente victoria en una exigente pelea, habrá extraído valiosa experiencia respecto a cómo debe ajustar y gestionar su segundo aire.
Por su parte, Brown se dio a conocer a extensas capas de aficionados con una muy meritoria actuación, que demostró que con más bagaje podría lograr el título inglés en el futuro. En definitiva, más allá del resultado y de que Gilley avanza en dirección a la disputa del campeonato británico, ambos púgiles parecieron salir con su prestigio mejorado de esta contienda, además ofreciendo un gran espectáculo a los aficionados.

The Gwynne-Willis was not the only good fight of the MTK Global event, since, among others, its co-feature was also an excellent bout. In it, the English super welterweight champion Sam Gilley 14(7KO)-1 fulfilled the forecasts and defeated the unbeaten challenger Drew Brown 12(1KO)-1(1), although he had to work thoroughly to achieve the TKO in the ninth round over a very brave rival.
The challenger Brown was not intimidated by being in his first title fight and against his biggest opponent to date, but he came out ready to offer war, closing the distance and throwing combinations of hooks with great tenacity against Gilley. The latter also had his moments and landed some straight right hands that showed his punch, but Brown seemed to get off to a better start.
However, Gilley adjusted, first holding to reduce the exchanges, then trying to use more his jab and his straight right from mid-range, and finally trying to anticipate and taking the initiative. Thus, Gilley laid the foundations to change the situation, connecting in the fifth round a powerful straight shot and an uppercut that shook his opponent.
Brown responded to the difficulties with more courage and effort trying to fight at close range but, although he had instants of effective pressure, he fell into clinches many times, received dangerous counter right hands and was getting visibly tired. So, after an increasing number of holds entangled a bit the clash, in the eighth round Gilley connected hard hooks in exchanges that hurt Brown, who continued to fight bravely into that round but in the next one received a powerful right hand that knocked him off balance. The boxer was held by the ropes (he should have received a count then) and after a new straight punch he was knocked down on the canvas while the referee stopped the fight.
Although he had an advantage in experience over his opponent, Gilley is a young boxer with less than twenty fights, so, in addition to the morale that the resounding victory will have given him, he will have gained valuable experience about how to adjust and manage his second wind.
For his part, Brown made himself known to many fans with a very meritorious performance, which showed that with more experience he could conquer the English title in the future. In short, beyond the result and the fact that Gilley is moving in the direction to fight in a British championship, both fighters seemed to come out of the bout with their prestige improved, offering also a great show to the fans.
