El sábado, en el AT&T Stadium de Arlington, Estados Unidos, tendrá lugar una importante velada de PBC encabezada por una triple unificación del peso wélter entre Errol Spence y Yordenis Ugás. El respaldo de esta cartelera contará en total con una decena de peleas, si bien las más destacadas serán cinco: las tres que acompañarán al Spence-Ugás en la emisión en PPV y las dos que se televisarán en abierto a través de Showtime.
“Pitbull” busca nuevo knockout
Perdiendo con ajustadas cartulinas ante una figura del boxeo estadounidense como Gervonta Davis en su último combate, el peso ligero mexicano Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz 22(15KO)-2-1 ha aumentado su prestigio de forma muy importante y se ha ganado una nueva valiosa oportunidad, que le llegará este sábado. De todos modos, si esta se puede considerar una pelea de calibre para Cruz no es por el rival, sino por ser el semifondo de la esperada velada. Y es que delante tendrá como oponente al veteranísimo cubano Yuriorkis “El Ciclón de Guantánamo” Gamboa 30(18KO)-4(3), púgil que ha dejado muy atrás su mejor momento, que ha recibido mucho castigo, que llega de dos derrotas y que no boxea desde hace un año y medio.
Así, Cruz tendrá la ocasión para buscar un nuevo knockout (no consigue uno desde su pelea ante Magdaleno en 2020) a través de su gran potencia y agresividad ante un rival 17 años mayor, que está muy ralentizado, que comete muchos fallos defensivos y que no tiene la mejor de las resistencias al cansancio. Con estos elementos a su favor, si Cruz tuviese una actuación decepcionante sin duda vería frenado su impulso actual, pero si cumple con las expectativas y vence contundentemente podría realizar comparaciones positivas, ya que Gamboa alcanzó el 12º asalto ante “Tank” Davis y llegó a la decisión contra Devin Haney.
Un nombre para el récord
El Cruz-Gamboa no será el único combate entre un joven boxeador con futuro y un veterano en la última etapa de su carrera, puesto que antes del choque co-estelar tendrá lugar una pugna también del peso ligero entre el invicto prospecto mexicano-estadounidense José “El Rayo” Valenzuela 11(7KO)-0 y el excampeón mundial mexicano Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas 27(19KO)-3(2)-2. Las premisas del combate arriba mencionado se vuelven a repetir en este, con un púgil 15 años más joven, potente, en buen momento y bien valorado enfrentándose a un boxeador que no está ni siquiera cerca de su mejor momento y que parte muy por detrás en las apuestas.
En el caso de Vargas, después de su positivo en test antidopaje su rendimiento decreció críticamente y fue dos veces vapuleado por Miguel Berchelt, mientras que en su último combate fue duramente castigado por el propio Isaac Cruz, alcanzando la decisión debido únicamente a los periodos de inacción ofrecidos por el favorito. Por ello, combatiendo ahora contra un Valenzuela que está respaldando las previsiones respecto a su carrera con un boxeo bastante eficaz, preciso y contundente, es probable que Vargas padezca muchas dificultades por la rapidez y la frescura de su oponente, contra el que dependerá de su experiencia y tenacidad.

La emisión en PPV se iniciará con un combate del peso wélter en el que el canadiense Cody Crowley 20(9KO)-0 tratará de continuar su avance hacia la parte alta de la división combatiendo contra el muy fogueado estadounidense Josesito “The Riverside Rocky” López 38(21KO)-8(3). Desde su meritoria actuación ante Thurman en 2019, López ha ofrecido buenas actuaciones ante oponentes de nivel medio-alto venidos a menos, pero lleva 16 meses inactivo y se mide a un boxeador de presión que en diciembre logró la mayor victoria de su carrera derrotando claramente al número 1 del ranking IBF, el uzbeko Abdukakhorov.
De ese modo, López se encuentra ante un reto muy exigente, en el que hasta cierto punto podría explotar su astucia, su bagaje profesional y su habilidad al contragolpe ante un contrincante que no tiene gran defensa, pero en el que un Crowley más fuerte que él podría poner a prueba intensamente su resistencia al cansancio con su constante presión y su notable volumen de golpes.
Guerra entre batalladores
El PPV del Spence-Ugás será precedido por dos duelos televisados en abierto a través de Showtime, siendo el estelar la eliminatoria WBA (con cinturón de subcampeón en juego) del peso wélter entre dos durísimos batalladores como el ruso Radzhab Butaev 14(11KO)-0 y el lituano Eimantas Stanionis 13(9KO)-0, combate que es sobre el papel muy superior a los ofrecidos en el respaldo de la cartelera principal. Y es que dos boxeadores invictos (la derrota de Butaev ante el dopado Besputin fue cambiada a un No Contest), muy agresivos, con gran bagaje amateur, en perfectas condiciones físicas y en plenitud se verán las caras en un duelo excelentemente emparejado y que seguramente ofrecerá muchos fuertes intercambios.
Además, de este cruce saldrá uno de los aspirantes obligatorios del ganador del Spence-Ugás, por lo que tanto desde el punto de vista estrictamente boxístico como desde el de las consecuencias es una pugna que merece mucha atención, especialmente siendo difícil que vaya a terminar decepcionando.
15 knockouts consecutivos
La emisión de Showtime teóricamente se iniciará con una nueva subida al ring del pegador superligero Brandun Lee 24(22KO)-0, que está impresionando con su capacidad de definición y su explosividad. Su adversario será Zachary Ochoa 21(7KO)-2(1), que llega de perder contra un Juan José Velasco que posteriormente fue noqueado por Elvis Rodríguez. Por ello, enfrentándose un gran pegador invicto cada vez más peligroso a un boxeador sin victorias antes oponentes cercanos al top 15, parece muy posible que Lee pueda extender a 16 su racha de triunfos por detención.
En Estados Unidos Showtime emitirá el tramo inicial (Butaev-Stanionis y Lee-Ochoa) el sábado desde aproximadamente las 19:00 ET/16:00 PT, la 1:00 de la madrugada en España, mientras que el PPV del Spence Ugás comenzará hacia las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 en España, donde habrá una emisión a través de la App de Eurosport.

The premises of the fight above mentioned are repeated in this one, with a fighter 15 years younger, powerful, in a good moment and highly rated facing a boxer who is not even close to his best moment and who is an obvious underdog.
In the case of Vargas, after his positive anti-doping test, his performance critically decreased and he was badly beaten twice by Miguel Berchelt, while in his last fight he was severely punished by Isaac Cruz, reaching the decision due solely to the periods of inaction offered by the favorite. For this reason, fighting now against Valenzuela, who is supporting the forecasts regarding his career with a quite effective, precise and forceful boxing, it is likely that Vargas will suffer many difficulties due to the speed and freshness of his opponent, against whom he will depend on his experience and tenacity.
Continuing the streak
The PPV broadcast will begin with a welterweight fight in which the Canadian Cody Crowley 20(9KO)-0 will try to continue his advance towards the top of the division fighting against the very experienced American Josesito “The Riverside Rocky” López 38(21KO)-8(3). Since his meritorious performance against Thurman in 2019, López has obtained good wins against mid-high level opponents in a bad moment, but he has been inactive for 16 months and is facing a pressure boxer who in December achieved the biggest victory of his career clearly defeating the number 1 of the IBF ranking, the Uzbek Abdukakhorov.
In this way, López has a very demanding challenge ahead, in which to a certain extent he could exploit his cunning, his professional experience and his ability to counterattack against an opponent who does not have a great defense, but in which he will fight a strong boxer that could intensely test his resistance with constant pressure and remarkable punch output.
War between hard fighters
The Spence-Ugás PPV will be preceded by two duels aired through Showtime, the main one being the WBA welterweight eliminator (with secondary belt at stake) between two very tough fighters: the Russian Radzhab Butaev 14(11KO)-0 and the Lithuanian Eimantas Stanionis 13(9KO)-0. On paper this fight is far superior to those offered in the PPV undercard. Two undefeated boxers (Butaev’s defeat against the doped Besputin was changed to a No Contest), very aggressive, with greaut amateur career, in perfect physical condition and in their prime will face each other in an excellently matched duel that surely will offer many hard exchanges.
In addition, one of the mandatory challengers for the winner of the Spence-Ugás will come out of this bout, so from a strictly boxing point of view or taking into account the consequences, it is a fight that deserves a lot of attention, especially since it is unlikely that it will end up disappointing.
15 consecutive knockouts
The Showtime broadcast will theoretically begin with a new fight for super lightweight puncher Brandun Lee 24 (22KO)-0, who is impressing with his finishing ability and explosiveness.
