Previa: Lubin-Fundora, Harrison vs. Sergio García y Salgado-Perrella, interesantes duelos superwélter en evento de PBC

La división del peso superwélter será la absoluta protagonista de la buena velada que Premier Boxing Champions y Showtime ofrecerán este sábado desde el Virgin Hotels de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, puesto que los tres enfrentamientos televisados se disputarán en esa categoría. Los duelos serán muy interesantes, siendo uno una eliminatoria final, otro un choque entre un excampeón mundial y un extitular continental y el restante una pugna entre un invicto sin poner a prueba enfrentándose a un fogueado y capaz pero irregular boxeador.
Casi un campeonato mundial
Como es posible que el ganador del campeonato por el título indiscutido del peso superwélter Charlo-Castaño II deje vacantes sus coronas, muchos pensaban que quizás el aspirante obligatorio WBC que se elegirá en la eliminatoria final Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin 24(17KO)-1(1) vs. Sebastián “The Towering Inferno” Fundora 18(12KO)-0 necesitaría pelear contra un coaspirante por el cinto sin dueño. Sin embargo, finalmente el WBC ha decidido que en el Lubin-Fundora esté en juego un provisional título interino, por lo que su poseedor se convertiría en campeón mundial de pleno derecho si la corona absoluta quedase vacante.
Así, estos boxeadores estadounidenses no sólo combatirán por acercarse a la disputa de un mundial, sino que lo harán por estar rozando la coronación. Por otro lado, el choque será una prueba definitiva para decidir cuál es el lugar de cada uno de estos púgiles en la parte alta de la división, teniendo la oportunidad Lubin de recuperar la confianza de quienes prematuramente dieron por perdida su carrera tras su derrota en un round ante Jermell Charlo, mientras que Fundora podría dar un golpe en la mesa después de controvertidos resultados ante Sergio García y Jamontay Clark.
Por otro lado, en lo boxístico, es un choque con evidentes alicientes, puesto que se enfrentarán un Lubin con mucha calidad técnica y precisión pero un muy cuestionado encaje y un Fundora con versatilidad y dimensiones pero grandes brechas defensivas, teniendo ambos opciones de victoria.
En la mayoría de sus combates Lubin ha controlado los rounds con su destreza, gestión de los espacios y velocidad de manos, siendo evidente que podría conectar nítidos directos aislados ante un Fundora que recibió manos clarísimas de un García con mucho menos alcance que su rival del sábado. Sin embargo, ante Jeison Rosario, Terrell Gausha y otros púgiles, Lubin ha quedado dañado por golpes de poder inesperados, por lo que no se puede ni mucho menos poner la mano en el fuego por él en un combate ante un Fundora fuera de lo común en su tamaño y que puede llegar a ser muy complicado cuando presiona con intensidad. En definitiva, este es un muy buen choque y que valdrá la pena ver incluso si finalmente no terminase siendo tan intenso y emocionante como se espera y Lubin lo consiguiese dormir con un tedioso dominio táctico.
Una nueva oportunidad
En el semifondo se enfrentarán dos boxeadores muy bien clasificados pero que vienen de resultados negativos y que necesitan un triunfo de calibre para alzarse de nuevo hasta lo más alto. Estos serán el excampeón mundial estadounidense Tony “Super Bad” Harrison 28(21KO)-3(3)-1 y el excampeón continental español Sergio “El Niño” García 33(14KO)-1, quienes son respectivamente 5º y 4º WBC. El local accederá a este duelo un año después de su nada positivo empate ante Bryant Perrella, mientras que García entra a la pelea cuatro meses después de su controvertida derrota ante Fundora.
No obstante, mientras Harrison está viendo su prestigio decrecer, García mejoró mucho su valoración internacional con una actuación más que meritoria ante el gigante Fundora, pareciendo que el visitante llega a la contienda en un mejor momento. Además, el encuentro podría ser todo un reto para Harrison, púgil que tras repetidos problemas para controlar el cansancio reconvirtió su boxeo hacia un estilo táctico con una muy escasa frecuencia de golpeo. Por ello, aunque Harrison sabe competir, tiene cualidades naturales y su afilado jab podría ser sobrevalorado por los jueces, no parece que García sea precisamente un oponente ideal para él, siendo conocido el español por su infatigable resistencia y por una frecuencia de puños muy notable.
De ese modo, este es otro combate muy bien emparejado y con evidente interés en el que García tiene posibildades de victoria si logra crear una pelea de alto ritmo que desgaste al local.
Un gran salto adelante
La cartelera se abrirá con el duelo entre el mexicano Kevin Salgado 14(9KO)-0 y el estadounidense Bryant “Goodfella” Perrella 17(14KO)-3(2)-1, siendo este un enorme aumento de dificultad para el primero respecto a sus anteriores rivales. Y es que, Salgado hasta ahora se ha enfrentado sólo a contrincantes de nivel limitado, mientras que Perrella es un boxeador que, pese a sus defectos, tiene importantes cualidades y se ha medido a boxeadores como Yordenis Ugás, Abel Ramos y, como se ha dicho más arriba, Tony Harrison.
En cualquier caso, Salgado, hermano del campeón mundial Juan Carlos Salgado, es un tres veces oro nacional mexicano como amateur considerado un prospecto con proyección por su fortaleza y tenacidad, así que tampoco se debe ver como una víctima propiciatoria. Al contrario, si una vez más Perrella no reparte bien su trabajo y no tiene la constancia necesaria, perfectamente Salgado podría ponerle en muy serias dificultades.
Estos tres combates serán emitidos el sábado en Estados Unidos por Showtime desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT, las 4:00 de la madrugada en España, donde serán televisados por Eurosport 2.

The super welterweight will be the absolute protagonist of the good fight card that Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime will offer this Saturday from the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, United States, since the three televised matches will be in that division. The duels will be very interesting, one being a final eliminator, another a clash between a former world champion and a former continental titleholder and the remaining a fight between an untested prospect facing a seasoned and capable but irregular boxer.
Almost a world championship
As the winner of the fight for the undisputed super welterweight title Charlo-Castaño II may vacate his titles, many thought that perhaps the WBC mandatory challenger chosen in the final eliminator Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin 24(17KO)-1(1) vs. Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora 18(12KO)-0 would need to fight a co-challenger for the belt without owner. However, finally the WBC has decided that a provisional interim title will be at stake in the clash Lubin-Fundora, so its holder would become full world champion if the main crown becomes vacant.
Thus, these American boxers will not only fight to get closer to a world championship bout, but they will do it to be close to the coronation. On the other hand, the fight will be a definitive test to sort out these fighters’ place at the top of the division, with Lubin having the opportunity to regain the confidence of those who prematurely discarded his career after his one-round loss to Jermell Charlo, while Fundora could make a statement after controversial results against Sergio García and Jamontay Clark.
In a sporting sense, it is also a match with obvious interest, since in it will clash a boxer with a lot of technical quality and precision but a highly questioned chin and a fighter with versatility and dimensions but huge defensive breaches, both having possibilities of achieving victory.
In most of his fights Lubin has controlled the rounds with his skill, distance management and hand speed, so he could land hard straight punches against Fundora, who was hit by very clear hands from a boxer with much less reach as Sergio Garcia. However, against Jeison Rosario, Terrell Gausha and other fighters, Lubin has been hurt by unexpected power shots, so it is difficult to be completely sure about his victory in a fight against Fundora, who is unusual in his size and can become very complicated when he presses hard. All in all, this is a very good duel and one that will be worth watching even if it ultimately doesn’t end up being as intense and exciting as expected and Lubin monotonously dominates it with his tactical control.
Another opportunity
Two very well-ranked boxers will face each other in the co-main event, fighters that come from negative results and need an important victory to return to the top. These will be the American former world champion Tony “Super Bad” Harrison 28(21KO)-3(3)-1 and the Spanish former continental champion Sergio “El Niño” García 33(14KO)-1, who are respectively 5th and 4th in the WBC official ranking. The local will enter this duel a year after his not very positive draw against Bryant Perrella, while Garcia enters the fight four months after his controversial loss to Fundora.
However, while Harrison’s prestige is decreasing, García greatly improved his international valuation with a more than meritorious performance against the giant Fundora, so it seems that the visitor comes to the bout in a better moment. In addition, the match could be quite a challenge for Harrison, a fighter who, after repeated stamina problems, converted his boxing towards a tactical style with a very low punching rate. Therefore, although Harrison knows how to compete, has natural qualities and his sharp jab could be overrated by the judges, it does not seem that García is exactly an ideal opponent for him, since the Spanish is known for his indefatigable resistance and for a very remarkable striking frecuency.
So this is another very well-matched clash, in which Garcia has a chance of winning if he can create a high-pace fight that wears down the local boxer.
A great jump forward
The card will open with the confrontation between the Mexican Kevin Salgado 14(9KO)-0 and the American Bryant «Goodfella» Perrella 17(14KO)-3(2)-1, this being a huge increase in difficulty for the former compared to his previous rivals. Salgado has so far only faced low level opponents, while Perrella is a boxer who, despite his flaws, has important qualities and has been rival of Yordenis Ugás, Abel Ramos and Tony Harrison. In any case, Salgado, brother of world champion Juan Carlos Salgado, is a three-time Mexican national gold medalist as an amateur who is considered a promising prospect for his strength and tenacity, so he should not be seen as a victim either. On the contrary, if once again Perrella does not distribute his work well and does not have the necessary perseverance, Salgado could perfectly put him in very serious difficulties.
These three fights will be broadcast this Saturday in the United States by Showtime from 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT, 3:00 a.m. in UK time.
