Preview: Ryan García returns to the ring headlining DAZN event against Emmanuel Tagoe. Unification Esparza-Fujioka in the undercard

In recent the years, more attention has been paid to athletes’ «mental health», but this has been used by many to create a perfect shield for their mistakes: people who had gotten into trouble with the law, who had behaved uncivilly or had taken PEDs have alleged psychological problems to stop the criticism they received or even to be treated as heroes.

The case of Ryan “King Ry” García 21(18KO)-0 is not as serious, but people who have been close to him say that, more than the mental health problems that the boxer claims to have, he suffers from an inadequate assessment of himself and, above all, a lack of discipline and commitment to boxing. This topic definitely exploded with the criticism that García received from Canelo and with the end of García’s training in the Reynoso gym, many assuring that this was the definitive proof of the lack of will, effort and sacrifice of «King Ry.»

Be that as it may, while it’s rare for a depressed person to spend all day posting cheerfully on their social media, and while some of his fight cancellations seemed very convenient, the fact is that Golden Boy Promotions and the big US media want to sell the history that Garcia is a superman who has battled serious mental problems before returning to boxing, something he will do this Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, United States, fighting in a lightweigh bout against the Ghanaian Emmanuel Tagoe 32(15KO)-1(1).

Despite the fact that García has been inactive for 15 months (since his triumph against Campbell in which he suffered a knockdown), his rival has not been more active. Actually, Tagoe has not fought for 17 months, since in November 2020 he could not beat by stoppage Mason Menard, who has suffered his other two recent defeats in one and two rounds. In any case, although in this fight Garcia has all the elements in his favor and is the wide favorite, since he is a great income generator and has natural talent, many experts have preferred to inflate Tagoe by talking about his 32-win streak.

The African boxer certainly deserves credit for winning so many fights in a row, some of them against tough fighters, and has shown qualities with his active defense, counter-punching and combinations. However, García has advantages over him in promotional support, punch, size, amateur career, quality experience, etc. Also, Tagoe has never fought a boxer who was on the official rankings. Therefore, if it is true that García has prepared his return with great tenacity, that his professional relationship with his new coach Joe Goossen works as well as they say and offers a performance within his usual parameters, the undefeated should achieve victory.

As his defensive oversights have been his greatest weaknesses so far, the counterattacks and elusive actions of the astute Tagoe could serve to test the order and caution of Garcia’s attack, who may need to have some cold blood, control and patience against this opponent. However, Tagoe is a boxer with a slow pace and who has a great disadvantage in explosiveness and power compared to Garcia, so if the local star uses his offensive weapons well and is somewhat methodical, he should be able to find a way to land his power punches and achieve a very clear victory.

Unification of belts
In support of this fight there will be a unification of the WBA-WBC flyweight world belts between the American Marlen Esparza 11(1KO)-1 and the Japanese Naoko Fujioka 19(7KO)-2-1. In another time, Fujioka was a fearsome boxer due to her great strength, her pressure and her punching rate, which enabled her to beat rivals such as Mariana Juárez or Yokasta Valle, suffering her only defeats with some controversy and as visitor. However, she is now approaching 50 years of age, she has only fought four times in the last five years and she won a majority decision against Sulem Urbina, who Esparza beat by a wide margin.

Thus, and as the American has had help from the judges and the referee in her last two fights, if Esparza consistently uses her footwork, avoids exchanges and uses her technique at long distance, she could achieve the victory by decision (deserved or not), something that could be different if she allows Fujioka to work at close range continually.

A super middleweight fight between “King” Gabriel Rosado 26(15KO)-14(4)-1 and Shane Mosley Jr. 17(10KO)-4 will be also part of the undercard. In this clash the boxers will try to return to winning ways and reach a good opportunity as a test for a boxer with aspirations in the second half of the season.

DAZN will broadcast this card on Saturday from 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT., Sunday 2:00 a.m. on UK time.
