La mexicana Yamileth Mercado defendió su cinturón mundial WBC supergallo ante su compatriota Isis Vargas

Después de una derrota en una mayúscula pugna algunos boxeadores se ven desmoralizados y bajan su rendimiento, mientras que otros salen fortalecidos de esa experiencia. Este último caso parece ser el de la mexicana Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado 19(5KO)-3, boxeadora de 24 años que, tras ser vencida claramente en agosto por la top 5 libra por libra Amanda Serrano en su debut estadounidense, la pasada noche derrotó por amplia decisión unánime a su complicada compatriota Isis “La Emperatriz” Vargas 9(3KO)-4. Las puntuaciones de los jueces fueron de algo excesivo triple 99-91.
La retadora Vargas salió dispuesta a luchar por obtener su primer cinturón mundial ocupando el centro del ring y arrojando ofensivas, pero Mercado se mantuvo ordenada, astuta y precisa para contragolpear con buenos cruzados diestros, ganchos zurdos y derechas rectas. De ese modo, en el primer tercio logró una importante ventaja, lo que obligó a Vargas a reaccionar hacia la mitad de la pugna con todavía mayor carga ofensiva a través de insistentes uno-dos y otras combinaciones sobre Mercado, que padeció un corte en la frente por choque de cabezas.
De ese modo, el enfrentamiento se igualó un tanto y quedó en una situación decisiva, siendo entonces la monarca quien supo dar un golpe en la mesa. Tomando la iniciativa y pasando al ataque con determinación, Mercado llegó con fuertes ganchos de mano adelantada enlazados con rectos diestros y con otros golpes de poder que presionaron hacia las cuerdas a Vargas, que quedó tocada en el octavo asalto. En el noveno la aspirante incluso cayó al tapiz tras un gancho zurdo, si bien el árbitro estimó que la púgil había resbalado. Sea como sea, y aunque a Vargas no le faltó garra y voluntad para reponerse e intentar ofrecer batalla, Mercado cerró la contienda de nuevo con eficacia y anotando las manos más significativas.
Hoy por hoy, es perfectamente justificable señalar que Mercado es la mejor campeona mundial supergallo reinante, siendo cuanto menos indudable que tendría posibilidades de triunfo en choques ante Segolene Lefebvre (titular WBO) y Mayerlín Rivas (campeona WBA), estando el cinturón IBF vacante. No obstante, para que pueda certificar de forma definitiva su posición como número 1, Mercado necesitaría un triunfo en una unificación o ante una excampeona de gran renombre, estando por ver si logrará alcanzar una de estas oportunidades a medio plazo.
Si no fuese viable que disputase una pugna crucial, Mercado en un momento u otro tendrá que cumplir con una defensa obligatoria ante la titular interina WBC, la zimbabuense Kudakwashe Chiwandire, que pese a su escaso número de combates llega de vencer contra pronóstico a la exmonarca mundial Catherine Phiri.

After a loss in a major fight some boxers are demoralized and their performance declines, while others come out stronger from the experience. This last case seems to be that of the Mexican Yamileth “Yeimi” Mercado 19(5KO)-3, a 24-year-old boxer who, after being clearly defeated in August by the top 5 pound-for-pound Amanda Serrano in her American debut, last night defeated her difficult compatriot Isis “La Emperatriz” Vargas 9(3KO)-4 by wide unanimous decision. The judges’ scores were a bit excessive with triple 99-91.
The challenger Vargas came out ready to try to obtain her first world belt by occupying the center of the ring and throwing offensives, but Mercado remained ordered, cunning and precise to counterattack with good right crosses and left hooks. In this way, in the first third she achieved an important advantage, forcing Vargas to react towards the half point of the fight with an even greater aggressiveness through insistent one-twos and other combinations which hit Mercado, who also suffered a cut in the forehead in a clash of heads.
The confrontation was in a decisive situation, being then the monarch who knew how to swing the fight in her favor. Seizing the initiative and going on the attack with determination, Mercado connected hard lead hooks linked with straight right hands and other power shots that pressed Vargas to the ropes before hurting her in the eighth round. In the ninth the challenger even fell to the mat after a left hook, although the referee considered that the boxer had slipped. Be that as it may, and although Vargas did not lack grit and will to recover and try to offer battle, Mercado closed the fight again with effectiveness and scoring the most significant punches.
Today, it is perfectly justifiable to point out that Mercado is the best reigning super bantamweight world champion, being at least evident that she would have chances of victory in clashes against WBO titleholder Segolene Lefebvre and WBA champion Mayerlín Rivas (the IBF belt is vacant). However, for her to definitively certify her position as number 1, Mercado would need a win in a unification or against a former champion of great renown, so it remains to be seen if she will be able to achieve one of these opportunities in the medium term.
If it is not feasible for her to achieve a crucial fight, Mercado at one time or another will have to comply with a mandatory defense against the interim WBC titleholder, the Zimbabwean Kudakwashe Chiwandire, who despite her low number of fights comes from beating by upset the former world belt holder Catherine Phiri.
