Lewis Ritson venció y lució ante el excampeón Zlaticanin. El plata olímpico McCormack debutó con fácil triunfo

Cuando se enfrenta a un boxeador ágil y elusivo el británico Lewis “The Sandman” Ritson 23(12KO)-2(1) se ve en grandes apuros tácticos, pero midiéndose a un contrincante con limitada movilidad y cadencia, puede llegar a dar muestras de notable solvencia. Así, recordando a la versión de sus mejores actuaciones, cuando fue campeón británico o cuando derrotó a Robbie Davies Jr., Ritson en la noche del viernes logró una clarísima victoria unánime sobre el excampeón mundial montenegrino venido a menos Dejan “Dynamite” Zlaticanin 24(16KO)-4(2), que no ofreció un trabajo consistente. Las puntuaciones de los jueces fueron de doble 100-90 y de un 99-91.
El planteamiento de Zlaticanin fue el esperado, avanzando hacia su rival intentando acortar los espacios y buscando impactar sus golpes de poder curvos. Inicialmente, Ritson osciló entre mantener los espacios a través de sus jabs y sus uno-dos y tirar combinaciones de golpes curvos en corta. De todos modos, pronto el británico se puso por delante gracias a una alta cadencia de golpes con la que se anticipó y contuvo al visitante. Estos éxitos motivaron a “The Sandman”, que ante un adversario con escasa movilidad podía desplegar sus combinaciones con precisión e insistencia, destacando sus rectos enlazados con uppercuts.
De hecho, aunque su inadecuado uso del jab habitualmente le ha valido muchas críticas, en esta ocasión Ritson conectó este golpe con mucha facilidad y eficacia. En definitiva, aunque en ciertos momentos Zlaticanin realizó alguna eventual embestida con más tesón, éste se estaba viendo tan irresolutivo ante las frecuentes ofensivas de su oponente que Ritson verdaderamente lució y pareció tener mucho más nivel del que realmente tiene.
Aunque en algún momento “Dynamite” pareció dañado por un hook al cuerpo, éste resistió el castigo y siguió buscando una mano aislada decisiva que no llegó. Y es que, Ritson, bloqueando, esquivando o encajando, soportó los puños escogidos de Zlaticanin y continuó desbordando con sus uno-dos-hook, sus gancho-uppercut y sus insistentes jabs. Por ello, y con el visitante no teniendo energías para poder ofrecer una réplica firme en el último tramo, tras los diez episodios la victoria de Ritson fue incuestionablemente clara.
Esta victoria amplísima no servirá para que los decepcionados con Ritson vuelvan a creer en él. Con todo, hay que recordar que era 12º IBF y 13º WBA antes de este triunfo y que en unas semanas los cuatro cinturones mundiales de la categoría quedarán vacantes, ofreciendo muchas oportunidades a los ranqueados. En ese escenario, será inviable que Ritson alcance un campeonato por uno de los cintos vacantes, pero no sería descartable que, si logra algún triunfo significativo en su próxima subida al ring, pueda terminar el año cerca de una eliminatoria.
Debut de un plata olímpico
Como choque co-estelar tuvo lugar el debut profesional del plata olímpico británico Pat McCormack 1(1KO)-0, que casi no tuvo que trabajar ante el sustituto tardío Justin Menzie 5(1KO)-6(4)-1.
McCormack salió agresivo y, después de atacar con series de puños a Menzie y conducirlo contra las cuerdas, impactó un gancho zurdo al hígado (parte de una rápida combinación) que llevó al tapiz a su contrincante, terminando entonces este desparejadísimo duelo.

When the British Lewis “The Sandman” Ritson 23(12KO)-2(1) faces an agile and elusive boxer he finds himself in great tactical troubles. However, facing an opponent with limited mobility and punch output, he can have remarkable performances. Thus, recalling the version of his best nights, when he was British champion or when he defeated Robbie Davies Jr., on Friday night Ritson achieved a very clear unanimous victory over the Montenegrin former world champion Dejan «Dynamite» Zlaticanin 24 (16KO )-4(2), who did not offer a consistent work. Judges’ scorecards were of double 100-90 and one 99-91.
Zlaticanin’s approach was the expected, advancing towards his rival trying to close the distance and looking to connect his power shots in hook. Initially, Ritson oscillated between boxing at distance through his jabs and his one-twos and throwing combinations at close range. In any case, the British soon took the lead thanks to a high rate of punches with which he contained the efforts of the visitor. These successes motivated “The Sandman” who, against an opponent with little agility, deployed his combinations with precision and insistence, standing out his straight shots linked with uppercuts.
In fact, although his inappropriate use of the jab has usually earned him a lot of criticism, on this occasion Ritson landed this punch with great ease and efficiency. In short, although at certain moments Zlaticanin made some eventual attack with more tenacity, he was so irresolute in front of his opponent’s frequent offensives that Ritson really shined and seemed to have much more level than he really has.
At some point “Dynamite” seemed hurt by a hook to the body, but he withstood the punishment and kept looking for a decisive hand that did not find. Blocking, dodging or taking the hits, Ritson withstood Zlaticanin’s chosen attacks and continued to be superior with his one-two-hooks, his hook-uppercut combinations and his insistent jabs. For this reason, and with the visitor not having the energy to be able to offer a firm reply in the last strecht, after the ten rounds Ritson’s victory was unquestionably clear.
This triumph will not serve to make those disappointed with Ritson believe in him again. However, he was 12th IBF and 13th WBA at super lightweight before this victory and in a few weeks the four world belts of the divison could be vacant, offering many opportunities to those ranked. In that scenario, it will be unlikely for Ritson to access a championship for one of the vacant belts, but it would not be ruled out that, if he achieves some significant victory in his next fight, he could end the year close to an eliminator.
Debut of an Olympic silver medalist
The co-main event featured the professional debut of British Olympic silver medalist Pat McCormack 1(1KO)-0, who hardly had to work against late substitute Justin Menzie 5(1KO)-6(4)-1.
McCormack came out aggressive and, after attacking Menzie with series of punches and driving him against the ropes, connected a left hook to the liver (part of a quick combination) that brought his opponent to the mat, thus ending this extremely lopsided duel.
