En el deporte, y por lo tanto también en el boxeo, es inevitable que las miradas se centren en quienes más victorias consiguen, en quienes mejores rendimientos tienen y en quienes están en lo más alto. No obstante, a veces esta tendencia natural lleva a muchos a pasar por alto a boxeadores que, aunque no merecen un lugar en la élite absoluta de su división, pueden ofrecer noches de entretenimiento y lograr buenas victorias.
Este es el caso del británico Lewis “Sandman” Ritson 22(13KO)-2(1), que en su momento surgió como una posible gran estrella en el boxeo de Newcastle pero que terminó viendo diluida en buena parte su proyección internacional. Y es que, después de mantenerse invicto en 17 combates, coronarse campeón británico y encadenar ocho knockouts, algunos de ellos bastante impresionantes, su nivel quedó delimitado por un tropiezo ante Francesco Patera, un controvertido triunfo sobre “Títere” Vázquez y una contundente derrota por KOT a manos de Jeremías Ponce.
Aun así, y al margen de que su posicionamiento como 13º WBA superligero no es demasiado realista, de que tiene una defensa muy permeable y de que sufre ante los púgiles dinámicos, Ritson es un boxeador tenaz, combativo y que se presta a ofrecer choques divertidos ante púgiles de sus mismas características. Por ello, aunque quizás nunca llegue a coronarse campeón mundial, menos todavía en una división tan contendida como el peso superligero, Ritson pueda ofrecer todavía en su carrera un notable número de pugnas que, entre otras cosas, permitan a los aficionados olvidarse de sus problemas por un rato.
Una de ellas podría ser este viernes, en el Arena de Newcastle, Reino Unido, ante el excampeón mundial montenegrino Dejan “Dynamite” Zlaticanin 24(16KO)-3(2), un oponente que ha dejado su mejor momento atrás hace bastante tiempo y al que no se le espera ya en el top pero que también es valiente y agresivo y busca los golpes de poder con tesón. Un ejemplo de ello Zlaticanin lo ofreció el pasado septiembre cuando, a pesar de llegar de una larga inactividad, aguantó doce rounds sin caer y trató de contestar ante el capaz Zaur Abdullaev, que posteriormente noqueó a Jorge Linares.
Dado que Ritson ha dejado varias actuaciones por debajo de las expectativas es difícil que muchos quieran poner la mano en el fuego asegurando que indudablemente logrará una gran victoria. Sin embargo, el británico es claro favorito para imponerse a un adversario que ha tenido que lidiar durante toda su carrera con importantes desventajas en altura y alcance, que ha padecido una escasa cadencia de peleas en los últimos años y que se enfrenta como visitante a un boxeador que, pese a sus defectos, debería poder resistir los envites de su contrincante y ofrecer dura réplica.
Si no es que uno de los dos encuentra una mano que dañe a su contrincante o que se vea forzado a ceder la iniciativa, el enfrentamiento debería ofrecer buenos encontronazos en el centro del ring, en los que el voluntarioso Zlaticanin tratará de conectar hooks enlazados en corta ante un Ritson que debería intentar imponer sus rectos en la distancia media y sus ganchos al cuerpo para buscar contener o revertir el empuje de su adversario.
Williamson, Ward y McCormack
El respaldo de este evento ofrecerá algunos combates mencionables, como un campeonato de Reino Unido del peso superwélter en el cual Troy “Trojan” Williamson 17(13KO)-0-1, 9º IBF, tratará de mantener el impulso que le dio su knockout sobre Ted Cheeseman enfrentándose a un Mason “Nutty” Cartwright 17(7KO)-2(2)-1 que ha perdido por KOT sus dos mayores combates hasta la fecha.
Por otro lado, el 4º WBA del peso pluma Thomas Patrick Ward 31(4KO)-0-1, que lleva años esperando una oportunidad de oro que nunca llega, disputará un rodaje contra el resistente Alexis Boureima Kabore 29(8KO)-5(1), y el plata olímpico Pat McCormack 0(0KO)-0 debutará como profesional enfrentándose al nicaragüense Danny Mendoza 6(4KO)-7, que resistió todos los rounds ante Gary Cully y Paddy Donovan.
Este evento será emitido en el continente europeo por Eurosport, apareciendo de momento en la programación española a las 21:00 del viernes, o sea las 20:00 en Reino Unido y las 16:00 ET/13:00 PT.
Preview: Lewis Ritson faces former world champion Dejan Zlaticanin in Probellum’s event this Friday
In sport, and therefore also in boxing, it is inevitable that attention focus on those who achieve the most victories, who have the best performance and who are at the top. However, sometimes this natural tendency leads many to overlook fighters who, although they do not deserve a place in the absolute elite of their division, can offer nights of entertainment and achieve good victories.
This is the case of the British Lewis “Sandman” Ritson 22(13KO)-2(1), who at a certain time emerged as a possible great star in the Newcastle boxing but who ended up seeing his international projection crumble. After remaining undefeated in 17 fights, being crowned British champion and chaining eight knockouts, some of them quite impressive, his level was limited by a setback against Francesco Patera, a controversial victory over «Títere» Vázquez and a resounding defeat by TKO at the hands of Jeremías Ponce.
Even so, and apart from the fact that his position as 13th WBA super lightweight is not very realistic, that he has a very permeable defense and that he suffers against dynamic fighters, Ritson is a tenacious, combative boxer capable of offering entertaining clashes against fighters of the same characteristics. For this reason, although he may never be crowned world champion, even less so in a division as contested as super lightweight, Ritson can still offer a notable number of fights in his career that, among other things, allow fans to forget about their problems for a while.
One of this bouts could be this Friday, at the Newcastle Arena, United Kingdom, against Montenegrin former world champion Dejan “Dynamite” Zlaticanin 24(16KO)-3(2), an opponent who has left his best moment behind and who is no longer expected at the top but who is also brave and aggressive and tries to connect power shots with determination. An example of this was offered by Zlaticanin last September when, despite coming from a long inactivity, he lasted twelve rounds without falling and tried to answer against the capable Zaur Abdullaev, who subsequently knocked out Jorge Linares.
As Ritson has had several performances below expectations, many will doubt that he will achieve a great victory. However, the British is the clear favorite to win against an opponent who has had to deal with significant height and reach disadvantages throughout his career, who has suffered from a low frequency of bouts in recent years and who fights as a visitor against a boxer who, despite his flaws, should be able to withstand his attacks and offer a tough reply.
Unless one of the two finds a hand that hurts his opponent or is forced to give up the initiative, the fight should offer good exchanges in the center of the ring, in which the willful Zlaticanin will try to connect hooks in close range against Ritson, who should try to impose his straight punches in the mid distance and his hooks to the body to try to contain or reverse his opponent’s pressure.

The undercard of this event will offer some mentionable bouts, such as a British super welterweight championship in which Troy “Trojan” Williamson 17(13KO)-0-1, 9th IBF, will try to maintain the momentum gained with his knockout over Ted Cheeseman facing a Mason “Nutty” Cartwright 17(7KO)-2(2)-1, who has lost his two biggest fights to date by way of TKO.
On the other hand, 4th WBA featherweight Thomas Patrick Ward 31(4KO)-0-1, who has been waiting for years a great opportunity, will have a tune-up against the resistant Alexis Boureima Kabore 29(8KO)-5(1), and Olympic silver medalist Pat McCormack 0(0KO)-0 will make his professional debut against Nicaraguan Danny Mendoza 6(4KO)-7, who resisted all rounds against Gary Cully and Paddy Donovan.
