Ver pugnar a un medallista olímpico en una prueba de fuego ante un hábil rival, jugándose ambos una oportunidad ante un púgil de élite, resulta algo evidentemente interesante y un buen combate estelar para una velada. Con todo, añadiendo más alicientes al evento Wood-Conlan de este sábado, organizado por Matchroom Boxing y emitido por DAZN desde el Nottingham Arena de Nottingham, Reino Unido, se han incluido otros choques relevantes, destacando dos excelentes tests para dos prometedores boxeadores en ascenso.
Invicto vs. veterano
Quien haya seguido las veladas de MTK Global del último par de años conocerá bien al espigado irlandés Gary “The Diva” Cully 13(7KO)-0, un peso ligero zurdo de 1,88 m de altura que, además de unas dimensiones fuera de lo común para la división, posee habilidad técnica y capacidad para generar daños. No obstante, este púgil con cualidades para llegar a ser un peso ligero insigne todavía no es muy conocido por el gran público, algo que cambiará este sábado cuando se enfrente al excampeón mundial mexicano Miguel “Títere” Vázquez 44(17KO)-10(2).
Más allá de los diversos logros de este excampeón mundial, Vázquez se ha visto muy revalorizado desde que en 2020 tuvo una controvertida derrota ante Lewis Ritson, por lo que se la ha seleccionado para que, con su estilo intrincado, su heterodoxia y sus considerables dimensiones para la categoría (1,78 cm de altura y 1,83 m de alcance), ponga a prueba de qué está hecho el prospecto Cully.
Este exigente reto le llega al irlandés bastante pronto en su carrera, pero encadenando rápidas victorias ante el duro top 15 kazajo Kotochigov y el veterano Viorel Simion, habiendo mostrado una creciente eficacia ofensiva con sus afilados rectos y siendo un boxeador poco convencional por sus características, en principio Cully debería poder compensar con sus virtudes las oscilaciones y la astucia del incómodo Vázquez y poder lograr una victoria que muestre mejor cuál es su potencial.
Una prueba de fuego muy temprana
Si Gary Cully dará un importante paso adelante pronto en su trayectoria, la peso superligero británica Sandy Ryan 3(2KO)-0 irá muchísimo más allá, puesto que en su cuarta pugna profesional se medirá a una excampeona mundial del nivel de la argentina Erica “La Pantera” Farías 26(10KO)-5, que ha estado clasificada en el top 10 libra por libra femenino y que en sus pugnas penúltima y antepenúltima fue derrotada por ajustadísimas y controvertidas decisiones contra Jessica McCaskill, actualmente monarca indiscutida del peso wélter.
Dicho esto, es innegable que Matchroom tiene la máxima confianza en Ryan. Ciertamente, la púgil ha mostrado en sus tres pugnas profesionales notable destreza, fuerza y, en definitiva, cualidades propias de una futura campeona mundial, si bien todo esto lo ha hecho en duelos ante rivales muy modestas, por lo que el salto en aumento de dificultad es descomunal. Aun así, y aunque se expone demasiado, en las apuestas Ryan parte como sólida favorita, considerándose que, aunque Farías es muy dura, competente y peligrosa en corta, la local tiene la rapidez, agilidad y explosividad para lograr imponerse. Sea como sea, es un choque interesante y al que valdrá la pena prestar atención, ya que, si Ryan vence, a las púgiles de la cumbre más les valdrá estar preparadas para lo que se les avecina en el futuro próximo.
Harper regresa, Agyarko busca knockout
Se suponía que la excampeona mundial superpluma Terri Harper 11(6KO)-1(1)-1 iba a hacer su debut en el peso ligero peleando contra Heather Hardy, aunque finalmente su adversaria será la argentina Yamila Belén Abellaneda 13(3KO)-4-1, ante la que regresará al ring tras ser duramente noqueada por Alycia Baumgardner el pasado noviembre.
Abellaneda es una campeona nacional argentina resistente, asentada en el peso ligero y que cuenta con experiencia internacional, habiendo sufrido sus derrotas ante tres boxeadoras que posteriormente fueron campeonas mundiales (Berghult, Dicaire, Volante) y una bronce olímpica (Araujo). Por ello, es una púgil que teóricamente debería darle trabajo de utilidad a Harper para una pelea de recuperación y adaptación, si bien la local será favorita y debería vencer con claridad si pone sobre el ring una versión similar a la que tuvo ante Wahlstrom, Thanderz o Jonas.
Por otro lado, el peso medio Caoimhin Agyarko 10(7KO)-0 intentará posicionarse en el ranking WBA y comparar su rendimiento al del destacado prospecto superwélter Charles Conwell peleando por un título menor contra el joven mexicano Juan Carlos “El Terri” Rubio 18(9KO)-1(1), que llega de perder por KOT en el tercer round ante el citado púgil estadounidense.

A very good test for an Olympic medalist against a skilled opponent, both risking a chance against an elite rival, is something obviously interesting and a good main bout for a fight night. However, adding more incentive to this Saturday’s Wood-Conlan event, organized by Matchroom Boxing and broadcasted by DAZN from the Nottingham Arena in Nottingham, United Kingdom, other relevant clashes have been included, standing out two demanding matches for two promising fighters.
Undefeated vs. veteran
Anyone who has followed the MTK Global cards of the last couple of years will know well the tall Irishman Gary “The Diva” Cully 13(7KO)-0, a 6’ 2” (1.88m) southpaw lightweight who, in addition to his uncommon size for the division, possesses technical ability and capacity to generate damage. However, this boxer with the qualities to become a prominent lightweight is still hardly known by the public, something that will change this Saturday when he faces former Mexican world champion Miguel «Títere» Vázquez 44(17KO)-10(2).
Beyond the various achievements of this former world champion, Vázquez has been greatly revalued since he had a controversial defeat against Lewis Ritson in 2020, which is why he has been selected to test what the prospect Cully is made of with his intricate style, his unorthodox boxing and his considerable height and reach for the division (5’ 10“ and 72”).
This challenge comes to the Irishman quite early in his career, but with quick victories against the tough top 15 Kotochigov and veteran Viorel Simion, having shown increasing offensive effectiveness with his sharp straight punches and being an unconventional boxer by his characteristics, in principle, Cully should be able to compensate with his virtues the oscillations and cunning of the tricky Vázquez and achieve a victory that shows better what his potential is.
A very early trial by fire
If Gary Cully will have a step forward early in his career, the British super lightweight Sandy Ryan 3(2KO)-0 will go much further, since in his fourth professional fight she will face a former world champion of the level of the Argentine Erica «La Pantera” Farías 26(10KO)-5, who has been ranked in the top 10 female pound for pound and who in her penultimate and antepenultimate fights lost very close and controversial decisions against Jessica McCaskill, currently the undisputed welterweight champion.
That said, it’s undeniable that Matchroom has the utmost confidence in Ryan. Certainly, the boxer has shown in her three professional fights notable skill, strenght and, in short, qualities of a future world champion, although she has done so in duels against rivals of very low level, so the increase in difficulty is enormous. Even so, in the betting odds Ryan is solid favorite, as it is considered that, although Farías is very tough, competent and dangerous at close range, the local has the speed, ability and explosiveness to win. In any case, it’s an interesting matchup and one to pay attention to, as if Ryan wins, the fighters of the top should prepare for what lies ahead for them in the near future.
Harper returns, Agyarko looks for another knockout
Former super featherweight world champion Terri Harper 11(6KO)-1(1)-1 was supposed to make her lightweight debut against Heather Hardy, but ultimately her opponent will be the Argentine Yamila Belén Abellaneda 13(3KO)-4-1, against who she will return to the ring after being knocked out hard by Alycia Baumgardner last November.
Abellaneda is a resistant national champion with quality experience, having suffered her losses to three boxers who later became world champions (Berghult, Dicaire, Volante) and an Olympic bronze medalist (Araujo). For this reason, she is a fighter who theoretically should give Harper useful work for a recovery and adaptation fight, although the local will be favorite and should win clearly if she has a performance similar to the ones she had against Wahlstrom, Thanderz or Jonas.
On the other hand, middleweight Caoimhin Agyarko 10(7KO)-0 will try to position himself in the WBA ranking and make comparisons with the outstanding super welterweight prospect Charles Conwell fighting for a minor title against the young Mexican Juan Carlos “El Terri” Rubio 18(9KO)-1(1), who comes from losing by TKO in the third round against the aforementioned American boxer.
