Former super welterweight world challenger Dennis Hogan defeated by clear unanimous decision Wade Ryan

Nissan Arena, Brisbane, Australia. Super welterweight.

Nikita Tszyu’s debut was not the only super welterweight fight that took place this Thursday, since in this same division took place the confrontation between Irish, former world challenger, Dennis Hogan 30(7KO)-4(2)-1, who suffered his recent defeats against Munguía, Charlo and Tim Tszyu, and the competent Australian Wade Ryan 20(7KO)-10(1), who among other successes managed to knock down one time the aforementioned Tim Tszyu. This duel was a good opportunity for both to consolidate positive streaks and try to set their sights on an important fight, but it was Hogan who achieved a unanimous victory (120-108, 117-110 and 116-111) with a performance in which he showed his experience and cunning.

Since Hogan is orthodox and Ryan is soutpaw, their styles didn’t mesh too well early on, with both having inaccuracies and clinching repeatedly. However, little by little, Hogan was who knew how to get the most out of the situation using his precision, his timing and his skill. Attacking unexpectedly, for example with a straight punch, and immediately grabing his opponent or interrupting Ryan’s rhythm and progression with an opportunistic jab or a hook, in not a few occasions also followed by a clinch, Hogan was being superior.

In this way, when the mid-point had been reached, Hogan had taken control of the fight, since his rival could not achieve consistent successes in any tactical scenario and he was able to connect regularly the most significant shots of each round. Certainly, it was not a very brilliant fight, quite the contrary, but it could be appreciated the knowledge of the ring that Hogan has amassed in his career, with which he made his opponent miss shots, interrupted his boxing and hit him with clear punches.

To try to break this situation, Ryan tried to attack with more tenacity than order but, obviously, this did not bring him great results. In addition, the fighter lost a point for hitting his opponent on the back of the head in a clinch so, as Hogan’s uncomfortable boxing continued until the finish, once the duel was over it was evident that the streak of victories of Ryan was going to end.

Against a more explosive and faster opponent, Hogan would not have been able to achieve a victory, or at least not such a clear one, and it should also be noted that he is much closer to the end of his career than to the beginning, so it will be difficult for the boxer to obtain a victory of the highest importance in the future. All in all, as he demonstrated in his controversial defeat against Jaime Munguía, the Irishman is a very capable boxer who, although may fall far short in duels against the elite, could be a very interesting test for quite a few top 15 boxers, for fighters close to the rankings and for prospects.
