Anunciada unificación superpluma Óscar Valdez vs. Shakur Stevenson: “El ganador se convertirá en superestrella”

El promotor Eddie Hearn, líder de Matchroom Boxing, quiso levantar una polémica para evitar que Top Rank confirmase para el día 30 de abril la unificación de coronas WBC-WBO del peso superpluma entre Óscar Valdez y Shakur Stevenson, que realmente llevaba bastantes meses emplazada para esa fecha. La estrategia de Hearn era asegurar que iba contra el interés del boxeo, contra la historia, contra el boxeo femenino y contra la igualdad ubicar esa unificación en el mismo día del confirmado choque Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano, que él organizará.
Con todo, aunque Hearn fue ayudado en sus afirmaciones por otras voces, como miembros de la cúpula de DAZN, que llevaron al fango la discusión y trataron con ello de presionar a ESPN (especialmente tras unas declaraciones de Bob Arum que no fueron políticamente correctas), Top Rank finalmente ha confirmado que el mismo día 30 de abril, en el MGM Grand de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, será la fecha en la que se producirá también el Valdez-Stevenson. Además, la cartelera no será emitida por un servicio de suscripción como el Taylor-Serrano, sino que en Estados Unidos se ofrecerá en abierto por ESPN y ESPN Deportes (también por ESPN+) desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT.
Dejando de lado las luchas entre promotores, el hecho es que el Valdez-Stevenson es uno de los mejores duelos posibles en el peso superpluma actual, y seguramente llevará al top 10 libra por libra al ganador, que habrá batido a un invicto campeón en dos divisiones.
En el anuncio oficial, Valdez señaló:
“Quiero dejar claro que soy el mejor peso superpluma en el mundo. Sabemos que Shakur Stevenson es muy bueno peleando, pero él es incluso mejor en las redes sociales. Yo dejaré que mis puños hablen por sí mismos”.
Por su parte, Stevenson aseguró:
“He estado persiguiendo este combate durante casi tres años, desde que los dos estábamos en el peso pluma. El 30 de abril voy a mostrarle a él y al mundo por qué me ha evitado durante todo este tiempo. Soy el mejor boxeador joven en el mundo y me convertiré en campeón unificado”.
En cuanto a Bob Arum, éste destacó el estatus que logrará el vencedor:
“Óscar Valdez y Shakur Stevenson son los mejores peso superpluma del mundo. Los fans y los boxeadores pidieron este enfrentamiento, y estamos orgullosos de ofrecerlo en directo por ESPN sin coste adicional. El ganador se convertirá en superestrella, y sé que los dos hombres estarán a la altura del reto”.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, leader of Matchroom Boxing, wanted to create a controversy to prevent Top Rank from confirming for April 30 the WBC-WBO super featherweight unification between Óscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson, which had actually been tentatively scheduled in that date for several months. Hearn’s strategy was to state that to put that unification on the same day as the confirmed Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano, which he will organize, was going against the interests of boxing, against history, against women’s boxing and against equality.
However, although Hearn was helped in his statements by other voices, such as important members of DAZN, who took the discussion to the mud and thereby tried to pressure ESPN (especially after some statements by Bob Arum that were not politically correct), Top Rank has finally confirmed that in April 30 will also take place the Valdez-Stevenson fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, United States. In addition, the card will not be broadcasted by a streaming platform like the Taylor-Serrano, as it will be offered for free on ESPN and ESPN Deportes (also on ESPN+) from 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.
Promoter fights aside, the fact is that the unification Valdez-Stevenson is one of the best possible matchups in super featherweight today, and will surely take into the top 10 pound for pound the winner, who will have defeated an unbeaten two divisions champion.
In the official announcement, Valdez said:
«I want to make it clear that I am the best 130-pound fighter in the world. We know Shakur Stevenson is very good at fighting, but he’s even better at social media. I’ll let my fists speak for themselves.”
For his part, Stevenson stated:
“I have been chasing this fight for nearly three years since we were both at featherweight. On April 30, I’m going to show him and the world why he ducked me all this time. I’m the best young fighter in the world, and I will become unified champion.”
As for Bob Arum, he highlighted the status that the winner will achieve:
“Oscar Valdez and Shakur Stevenson are the world’s best junior lightweights. The fans and the fighters demanded this matchup, and we are proud to deliver it live on ESPN for no extra charge. The winner becomes a superstar, and I know both men will rise to the challenge.”
