Spence-Ugás will have as a co-feature the very poorly matched fight Isaac Cruz vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa

Following the confirmation of the Errol Spence vs. Yordenis Ugás unification, which will take place on April 16 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, United States, have been leaked two duels that will compose the support broadcasted on PPV.

Firstly, it was reported that one of the fights would be the lightweight clash between José Valenzuela and Francisco Vargas, a fight between a promising undefeated boxer and a punished veteran in the final stretch of his career, characteristics that apparently will be repeated in the co-feature of the card: according to Keith Idec, the co-main event will be a bout between the Mexican Isaac Cruz and the Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa.

If we quickly put this meeting into context, it is obvious how badly matched it is. On the one hand, Cruz is a 23-year-old fighter with strength, power and tenacity and who has shown great resistance. Also, Cruz comes of a controversial defeat against the American star Gervonta Davis, against whom many saw him deserving of the win or the draw.

On the other hand, Gamboa is a veteran who had his first world championship fight in 2010, who left his best moment behind many years ago, who has serious problems of resistance and who in his last two fights has been widely defeated: in one by TKO after being punished for twelve rounds by Gervonta Davis and in the other without winning a round in two of the judges’ cards against Devin Haney.

Thus, after these precedents, it is truly surprising that PBC has decided that this matchup deserves the co-feature position of a bill like Spence-Ugás, since Gamboa, almost a year and a half inactive, will be in a very bad position in the odds against Cruz, who comes from the best performance of his career. In any case, it is true that the biggest promotional companies are recently saving costs in many of their great events and that the Cruz-Gamboa fight would simply follow this trend.
