No fue su mejor actuación ni con ella apoyó sus aspiraciones en la escena internacional, pero el peso gallo Lee “Lightning” McGregor 12(9KO)-0-1 pareció hacer más que suficiente para ganar su combate contra el argentino Diego Alberto “El Profeta” Ruiz 23(12KO)-5(1)-1. Sin embargo el juez-árbitro decretó sorprendentemente un empate (95-95) en este semifondo del evento de MTK del viernes.
El local esperaba que Ruiz avanzase y atacase, pero contrariamente éste se desplazó por el ring al comienzo, así que McGregor, que deseaba una pelea intensa y con intercambios, le presionó y arrojó duros uppercuts diestros, ganchos zurdos arriba, hooks diestros abajo, etc. Ante los ataques del británico, Ruiz resistió y ofreció valiente réplica, pero McGregor contaba con superior contundencia y precisión y en ocasiones recurría a buenas acciones defensivas, por lo que “Lightning” provocaba más daños y recibía menos.
Dado que el choque era bastante intenso pudo dar la sensación de que Ruiz podría pagar el precio de la dureza del choque pero, contrariamente, hacia la mitad intentó tomar la iniciativa y trabajó sobre su contrincante con bastante eficacia con sus combinaciones. Como consecuencia de esto, McGregor decidió a partir del séptimo anticiparse y mantener la iniciativa, volviendo a llevarse la mejor parte prolongadamente. De todos modos, no logró quebrar al capaz argentino ni evitó recibir potentes golpes de poder en los cruces de golpes que llegaron hasta el final.
Más allá del extraño resultado decretado por el árbitro, McGregor asegura que quiere disputar un mundial a finales de año, si bien es consciente de que, siendo el mejor clasificado en el ranking IBF, una pelea ante el campeón de este organismo Naoya Inoue resulta un reto enorme. Por ello, McGregor desea antes de la pelea titular una pugna de preparación ante algún rival de la parte alta de la división, aunque también señala que si se presenta sin más el mundial ante “Monster” no dudará en el aceptar el combate.
Triunfos de Giles y Fawaz
El semifondo se produjo después de la victoria a los puntos (40-36) del peso supermedio Joe Giles 2(0KO)-0 sobre Lewis van Poetsch 9(2KO)-138(11)-2. En este encuentro, que se desarrolló como un choque de estilos, el espigado Giles usó su ventaja en dimensiones y técnica para, en líneas generales, imponer sus directos y algunos uppercuts o hook a la contra. Por su parte, Van Poetsch intentó presionar, arrinconar a su contrincante y conectar hooks pero sus éxitos más relevantes fueron limitados y salteados pese a su tenacidad, de modo que el invicto pudo usar su regularidad y su mayor cadencia para decantar los asaltos y el combate.
Antes de este choque tuvo lugar el exitoso debut profesional del oro inglés Bilal Fawaz 1(1KO)-0, que derrotó por KOT en el tercer asalto al modesto ruso Vladimir Fleischhauer 1(0KO)-13(2). Tras un primer ajuste, Fawaz encontró el camino para alcanzar la distancia media-corta e impactar sus golpes de poder, que fueron yendo a más hasta empezar a poner en apuros a Fleischhauer. Alcanzado el tercer round, Fleischhauer fue conducido a las cuerdas y sobrepasado por una larga serie de puños sin respuesta y el tercer hombre tuvo que intervenir para decretar el final.

It was not his best performance nor did it support his aspirations on the international scene, but bantamweight Lee “Lightning” McGregor 12(9KO)-0-1 seemed to do more than enough to win his fight against Argentine Diego Alberto “El Profeta» Ruiz 23(12KO)-5(1)-1. However, the judge-referee surprisingly gave a result of draw (95-95) in this co-feautre of the MTK event on Friday.
The local expected Ruiz to come forward and attack, but instead he moved around the ring at the beginning, so McGregor, who wanted an intense fight with exchanges, put pressure on him and threw hard right uppercuts, left hooks to the head, right hooks to the body, etc. In response to the attacks from the British boxer, Ruiz resisted and offered a brave reply, but McGregor had superior power and precision and sometimes used good defensive actions, so «Lightning» caused more damage and received less.
Since the clash was quite intense, it could seem that Ruiz was going to pay the price but, on the contrary, towards the half point he tried to take the initiative and attacked his opponent quite effectively with his combinations. As a consequence of this, McGregor decided from the seventh round to anticipate and maintain the initiative, having again more success over long stretches. Still, he couldn’t break the capable Argentinian, nor did he avoid receiving power punches in the exchanges that took place till the end.
Leaving aside the strange result, McGregor says that he wants to fight in a world championship at the end of the year, although he is aware that, as the best ranked boxer in the IBF, a match against the belt holder of this organization, Naoya Inoue, is a huge challenge. For this reason, McGregor wishes a preparation bout against a rival from the top before the title fight, although he also points out that if the world championship opportunity against «Monster» comes sooner than expected he will not hesitate to accept it.
Victories for Giles and Fawaz
The co-feature came after a points win (40-36) of super middleweight Joe Giles 2(0KO)-0 over Lewis van Poetsch 9(2KO)-138(11)-2. In this match, which was a clash of styles, Giles used his advantage in size and technique to, generally, impose his straight punches and some uppercuts or hooks countering. On his side, Van Poetsch tried to pressure, corner his opponent and connect hooks but his biggest successes were limited despite his tenacity, so the undefeated was able to use his regularity to win the rounds and the bout.
Before this clash took place the successful professional debut of English national gold medalist Bilal Fawaz 1(1KO)-0, who defeated the modest Russian Vladimir Fleischhauer 1(0KO)-13(2) by TKO in the third round. After a first adjustment, Fawaz found a way to reach the mid-close range and hit his opponent with power shots, which began to put Fleischhauer in trouble. Finally, in the third round, Fleischhauer was pushed to the ropes and overwhelmed by a long combination of unanswered punches and the third man in the ring had to stop the fight.
