The unbeaten Abraham Nova defeated William Encarnación in the eighth round of the Smith-Geffrard co-feature

Fight by fight, the undefeated Puerto Rican-American prospect Abraham “El Super” Nova 21(14KO)-0 is getting closer to a decisive bout so, to continue preparing for the inevitable crucial test that is approaching to his career, he fought in a tune-up last night against Dominican William “El Gago” Encarnación 19(15KO)-2(2). The visitor showed his power at the beginning and fought tenaciously, but ended up losing in the eighth round.

In the center of the ring and in the middle range, Encarnacion landed a couple of good right hands, one of which damaged Nova somewhat in the first round. Therefore, the undefeated decided to adjust in the second round and, in addition to being more wary on defense, took the initiative and kept his opponent busy with jabs, lead hooks and one-twos, punches which led Encarnación to try to get away from the ropes with his straight shots in the third episode. Still, Nova’s power and precision showed and, with uppercuts and hooks and well-timed jabs, he slowed his opponent’s progress.

The Dominican Encarnación did not stop trying to fight for the victory, going on the attack in the fourth and throwing short combinations, but the repositioning of his rival, his blocks and his counterattacks ended up reducing his effectiveness. In the fifth round there were some short exchanges, but again it was Nova who got the best of it with his hooks. For this reason, in the sixth round, the Puerto Rican-American regained the initiative and connected straight punches and left hook-right uppercut combinations against Encarnación, who seemed tired and who, although he still used successfully some counterpunches, showed signs of that he was not far from being damaged.

Indeed, at the end of the seventh round a straight right hand shook Encarnacion, who was attacked briefly before the round ended. In any case, in the eighth Nova continued looking to knock his opponent down, unleashing strong hooks and straight punches that hit Encarnación hard until his corner decided to stop the fight.

It may be that Nova has the skill-power balance to achieve a crucial victory at featherweight and super featherweight or that his tactical mistakes could mean a decisive defeat against a top level rival, but the fact is that we will not be able to verify if one thing or the other is true until we see him in a big test. If we consider that from now on he will be a featherweight, in the WBO ranking there are several possible rivals, including stablemates such as Isaac Dogboe or Joet González, who seem to be suitable opponents for, once his team considers his development is complete, face a transcendental fight in which decide if he remains within reach of the world championship or if on the contrary he needs to reconsider his approach to the top.
