Después de la actuación de una tragafuegos (abajo imágenes), los olímpicos Charly “King’s Warrior” Suárez 15(9KO)-0 y Paul “Showtime” Fleming 28(18KO)-1(1)-1 ofrecieron una pelea realmente emocionante, disputada y buena. En ella, finalmente parecía que el filipino Suárez había hecho suficiente para imponerse al local Fleming, pero los jueces llevaban la pelea 108-101, 107-102 y 106-103 a favor del australiano hasta el undécimo round. Así, el KOT que logró Suárez en el último episodio fue vital para evitar la derrota por decisión y con él puso el broche de oro a una gran actuación.
Los dos-uno y dos-uno-dos de Súarez llegaron afilados contra Fleming en el primer asalto, lo que obligó al zurdo local a intentar anticiparse. Sin embargo, el filipino tenía mucha garra además de buen control de los espacios, destreza defensiva y gran timing, por lo que, tras buenas contras, con series de rectos, ganchos abajo y combinaciones directo-hook, Suárez aumentó la presión, llevó hacia las cuerdas a su contrincante y le provocó un corte en el ojo derecho.
Pronto quedó claro que era una pugna complicada para Fleming. Por un lado, cuando intentaba atacar era contragolpeado y si llegaba a anotar una mano su oponente le contestaba con gran tenacidad e insistencia. Por otro lado, cuando intentaba caminar y boxear de manera más táctica, el australiano recibía los dos-uno, los directos diestros y los ganchos de mano adelantada de un Suárez que arremetía con decisión y agresividad.
De todos modos, hacia la mitad Fleming aumentó su cadencia y se mostró más combativo, produciéndose buenos intercambios, tras los cuales Suárez cedió más la iniciativa y, quizás algo cansado, perdió mucha precisión. Viendo que su rival remontaba, “King’s Warrior” intentó intensificar sus acciones, pero ya no tenía los éxitos del comienzo, dado que Fleming le esquivaba, le contestaba con dureza y pasaba a atacarle llevándolo contra las cuerdas.
Aun así, Suárez no se rindió, sino que, ayudado por un segundo aire, volvió a la carga desde el décimo asalto y a base de volumen de golpes logró alcanzar con combinaciones de rectos a un Fleming ahora cansado. Finalmente, en un último asalto con cruces de golpes desesperados, ya que ambos sabían que el choque estaba igualado, Suárez se llevó la mejor parte con nítidos golpes de poder y derribó a su oponente aparatosamente con una gran izquierda. Fleming se levantó, pero estaba en mal estado y fue golpeado sin respuesta hasta la detención.
Este triunfo difícilmente podría ser más importante para la carrera de Suárez, ya que era 8º IBF superpluma antes de un triunfo ante un invicto olímpico ranqueado como 11º WBA y 13º IBF. Además, en juego hubo cinturones menores WBA, WBC e IBF, lo que sin duda garantizará al tagalo situarse muy bien en las clasificaciones y quedar a las puertas de una pelea eliminatoria. After the performance of a fire breather (below photos), the Olympians Charly “King’s Warrior” Suárez 15(9KO)-0 and Paul “Showtime” Fleming 28(18KO)-1(1)-1 offered a good, exciting and contested clash. In it seemed that Filipino Suárez had done enough to defeat the local Fleming, but the judges’ scores until the eleventh round were 108-101, 107-102 and 106-103 in favor of the Australian. Thus, the TKO that Suárez scored in the last episode was crucial to avoid a decision defeat and with it he closed in a perfect way a great performance.
Suarez’s two-one and two-one-two combinations landed sharp against Fleming in the first round, forcing the local southpaw to try to punch first. However, the Filipino had a lot of grit, as well as good control of distance, defensive skills and great timing, so, after good counters, with barrages of straight shots, hooks down and straight-hook combinations, Suárez increased the pressure, led to the ropes his opponent and cut him in the right eye.
It soon became clear that this was a difficult fight for Fleming. On the one hand, when he tried to attack he was counterpunched, and if he managed to score a hand his opponent answered him with great tenacity and insistence. On the other hand, when he tried to walk and box in a more tactical way, the Australian received the two-ones, the right hands and the hooks from Suárez, who attacked with determination and aggressiveness.
In any case, halfway through Fleming increased his punch output and was more combative, thus generating good exchanges, after which Suárez gave up the initiative more and, perhaps a little tired, lost a lot of precision. Seeing that his opponent was coming back, «King’s Warrior» tried to intensify his actions, but he no longer had the successes of the beginning, since Fleming dodged him, answered him with hard hands and attacked him against the ropes.
Even so, Suárez did not give up, but, helped by a second wind, returned to charge from the tenth round and, relying on a high work rate, he managed to hit Fleming (who was tired) with combinations of straight hands. Finally, in a last round of desperate exchanges, as both knew the match was close, Suárez got more success with hard power shots and dropped his opponent spectacularly with a big left. Fleming got up, but he was in poor shape and was punched without responding till the referee stopped the bout.
This win could hardly be more important to Suárez’s career, as he was IBF number 8 super featherweight before a victory over an unbeaten Olympian ranked as WBA number 11 and IBF number 13. In addition, there were WBA, WBC and IBF minor belts at stake, which will undoubtedly guarantee the Filipino a very good position in the rankings. So now that he could be even close to an eliminator, we will have to pay attention to his name, since very soon we will see him in a big fight, perhaps in his American debut.
