Han habido tantísimos precedentes recientes, que no vale la pena insistir en ello demasiado, pero el hecho es que la línea de flojas veladas organizadas por Golden Boy Promotions continúa este sábado. La promotora puede usar la excusa de moda entre las grandes compañías boxísticas y afirmar que lesiones y otros imprevistos han reducido el nivel medio del cartel. Pero la mayoría de estas empresas están actualmente tan obsesionadas con reducir gastos que sus “imprevistos” (que están resultando sumamente habituales en los últimos meses) sólo parecen un pretexto para justificar su deliberada búsqueda de hacer lo mínimo posible para cumplir los contratos con sus grupos audiovisuales.
En el caso del cartel de este sábado, en el College Park de Arlington, Estados Unidos, si no se incorpora alguna pelea a última hora para maquillar el evento, lo cierto es que hay realmente poco que destacar. Empezando por el enfrentamiento estelar, el peso ligero William “Camarón” Zepeda 27(23KO)-0, que no ha sido tan contundente como se esperaba en sus dos últimos combates (ante la piedra de toque René Alvarado y ante un “Jo Jo” Díaz con graves problemas extradeportivos), después de rechazar pelear en una eliminatoria final WBC del peso ligero ante Shakur Stevenson, se medirá al panameño Jaime Arboleda 19(14KO)-2(2).
El no favorito Arboleda es un púgil con buena velocidad de manos y atlético, si bien una vez que se pasa de su derecha recta a la contra tiene muy poca profundidad boxística y es especialmente limitado guerreando en corta prolongadamente. Por otro lado, en cada una de sus derrotas ha perdido antes del límite, se considera que no tiene un gran encaje, en el pasado reciente ha padecido problemas ante rivales del nivel de Nicolás Polanco y Jayson Vélez y sólo ha sumado un triunfo antes del límite en cerca de cuatro años.
Por ello, es lógico que se piense que un Zepeda que presiona mucho, que tiene una gran cadencia de golpes, que es zurdo y que tiene buena pegada podrá utilizar su acometividad, ritmo y fortaleza para desgastarle y derrotarle. De todos modos, el mexicano necesitará evitar avanzar tan frontal como en otras ocasiones para no ser sorprendido por alguna derecha y tendrá que mostrarse consistente en su afán ofensivo para no permitir que Arboleda pueda explotar su rapidez de forma decisiva.
Respaldo
Por lo demás, el evento sólo tendrá tres pugnas televisadas más. En una de ellas el peso pluma Diego de la Hoya 24(11KO)-1(1) tratará de anotarse su primera victoria de cierto relieve desde que fue noqueado por Ronny Ríos enfrentándose al invicto estadounidense Victor Morales 17(8KO)-0-1. Con todo, aunque sobre el papel Morales es un paso adelante respecto a sus anteriores rivales, éste tiene una importante desventaja en experiencia de calidad, nunca se ha medido a un boxeador consolidado de nivel medio-alto y en su mayor test sólo pudo sacar un empate ante otro prospecto falto de bagaje.
Por otro lado, se producirá un choque en el que el peso wélter estadounidense Estevan “Manos de Oro” Villalobos 16(11KO)-1(1)-1 se enfrentará al ghanés Fredrick Lawson 29(22KO)-3(3). Quizás algunos recuerden a Lawson por su derrota en eliminatoria IBF en 2015 ante Kevin Bizier. Pues bien, más allá de una victoria en el fracasado torneo organizado por Evander Holyfield, Lawson no ha hecho nada destacado en su carrera desde entonces, siendo noqueado por el jornalero Juan Ruiz y por el veterano Charles Hatley. De todos modos, Villalobos ha sustentado su récord ante rivales de nivel bajísimo y en su mayor test fue noqueado por el fanfarrón Blair Cobbs. En otras palabras, este duelo simplemente elegirá quién se convertirá en la siguiente víctima propiciatoria de un boxeador más destacado en la compañía, como por ejemplo Alexis Rocha.
Finalmente, la cartelera contará con un combate del prospecto estadounidense del peso supermedio David Stevens 12(9KO)-0, que tras noquear a Sean Hemphill en una velada de ShoBox, se enfrentará al veterano mexicano Marco Antonio Peribán 26(17KO)-6(3)-1, que en los últimos cinco años sólo ha peleado tres veces, perdiendo dos de los combates por KOT antes del sexto asalto.
Este evento será emitido por DAZN desde las 20:00 ET/17:00 PT, las 2:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en hora española.

There have been so many recent precedents that it’s not worth talking about it too much, but the fact is that the trend of poor-level cards organized by Golden Boy Promotions continues this Saturday. The promoter can use the common excuse among the big boxing companies today and state that injuries and other unforeseen circumstances have reduced the level of the event. But most of these companies are now so obsessed with reducing expenses that their «unforeseen events» (which have become extremely usual in recent months) only seem like a pretext to try to justify their intention to do as little as possible to fulfill the contracts with their audiovisual allies.
In the case of this Saturday’s evening, which will take place in the College Park in Arlington, United States, unless a last minute addition gives some interest to the event, the truth is that there is really little to highlight. Starting with the main bout, Mexican lightweight William «Camarón» Zepeda 27(23KO)-0, who has not been as forceful as expected in his last two bouts (against the stepping stone René Alvarado and against a boxer with serious issues outside the ring as «Jo Jo» Díaz), after refusing to fight in a WBC lightweight final eliminator against Shakur Stevenson, will face Panamanian Jaime Arboleda 19(14KO)-2(2).
The underdog Arboleda is an athletic fighter with good hand speed, although once his opponent passes his counter straight right he has very little boxing depth and is especially limited exchanging at short range. On the other hand, in each of his defeats he has lost by stoppage, it is considered that he does not have a great chin, in the recent past he has suffered difficulties against opponents of the level of Nicolás Polanco and Jayson Vélez and he has only scored one stoppage victory in about four years.
For this reason, it is logical to think that Zepeda, who puts a lot of pressure, who has a great work rate, who is southpaw and who has a good punch, will be able to use his aggressiveness, pace and strength to wear Arboleda down and defeat him. In any case, the Mexican will need to avoid moving forward as frontally as on other occasions (so as not to be surprised by a right hand) and he will have to be consistent in his offensive effort so as not to allow Arboleda to take advantage of his speed decisively.
Undercard
For the rest, the event will only have three more televised fights. In one of them, featherweight Diego de la Hoya 24(11KO)-1(1) will try to achieve his first win of some importance since he was knocked out by Ronny Ríos facing undefeated American Victor Morales 17(8KO)-0-1. In any case, although on paper Morales is a step up compared to his previous opponents, he has a significant disadvantage in terms of quality experience, he has never faced a consolidated mid-high level boxer and in his biggest test to date he was only able to fight to a draw against another inexperienced prospect.
On the other hand, American welterweight Estevan “Manos de Oro” Villalobos 16(11KO)-1(1)-1 will face Ghanaian Fredrick Lawson 29(22KO)-3(3). Some may remember Lawson for his loss to Kevin Bizier in an IBF eliminator in 2015. Well, beyond a win in the failed tournament organized by Evander Holyfield, Lawson hasn’t done anything of note in his career since, and he has been knocked out by journeyman Juan Ruiz and veteran Charles Hatley. Anyway, Villalobos has obtained his victories mostly against very low level opponents and in his biggest test he was knocked out by the cocky Blair Cobbs. In other words, this bout will simply choose who will become the next victim for a boxer better regarded in the company, such as Alexis Rocha.
Finally, the main card will feature a fight for American super middleweight prospect David Stevens 12(9KO)-0, who after knocking out Sean Hemphill in a ShoBox evening, will face Mexican veteran Marco Antonio Peribán 26(17KO)-6(3)-1, who has only fought three times in the last five years, losing two of these fights by TKO before the sixth round.
