Un año más la serie de eventos ShoBox: The New Generation continúa su misión de ofrecer bien emparejados choques para prospectos repletos de ambición y llenos de ganas de darse a conocer y llevar sus carreras a un nuevo nivel. En esta ocasión, la temporada arrancó con un evento encabezado por el choque entre dos imbatidos boxeadores con muy buenas carreras amateur como los estadounidenses Sean “Silky” Hemphill 14(8KO)-1(1) y David “Dynamite” Stevens 12(9KO)-0, siendo el último el que logró la victoria por knockout en el octavo round.
Los púgiles ofrecieron un choque de estilos disputado. Hemphill se desplazó por el ring lanzando con frecuencia y velocidad un certero jab, mientras que Stevens le intentaba presionar buscando oportunidades para conectar duros golpes de poder.
En el comienzo fue el exmiembro de la selección estadounidense Hempill quien pareció tener algo más de éxito en base a la regularidad de sus jabs, aunque la faltaron manos contundentes que le permitiesen crear un claro control ante un púgil más potente que él. Sin embargo, posteriormente el oro nacional juvenil Stevens, que tuvo problemas con una de sus botas (primero se le tuvo que cortar un trozo de suela despegado) comenzó a conectar de forma consistente fuertes directos diestros y ganchos zurdos que sacudieron la cabeza de su contrincante.
Con la pugna cerca del empate llegada a los dos últimos asaltos, parecía que quien tuviese más ambición y garra se llevaría la victoria, siendo éste Stevens. Dado que Hemphill ya no podía mantener su movilidad a esas alturas, aceptó la pelea intensa buscada por su rival, intercambió con él en corta con tenacidad en el séptimo asalto e impactó un buen número de hooks, destacando combinaciones al torso que parecieron dañar a su contrincante. Stevens, cuya suela se terminó desprendiendo entera, se cansó, pero no se arrugó, sino que sacó todo lo que tenía en el último asalto y con menos de 20 segundos para el final tumbó a su rival con una andanada de hooks.
Hemphill no pareció alzarse a tiempo, pero el árbitro le dejó seguir, incluso aunque no estaba en condiciones para ello, y a un par de segundos para el final Stevens lo volvió a derribar con un gancho zurdo y se hizo con el triunfo.
Aunque Stevens se hizo con la victoria, el hecho es que ambos boxeadores dejaron una buena imagen y mostraron cualidades evidentes, si bien resultó encomiable el esfuerzo de “Dynamite”. Y es que aunque se le pudo ver caminar hacia su esquina entre rounds inestable por los problemas con su bota y aunque tenía delante un hábil jabeador que empezó bien en la primera mitad, Stevens no perdió el rumbo, sino que mantuvo su metódica presión y se hizo con el knockout incluso después de ser dañado.
Así, Hemphill sin duda puede recuperarse de esta derrota y lograr buenos éxitos, mientras que Stevens, de 22 años, se ganó un nuevo hueco en alguna cartelera de cierta importancia para seguir progresando y desarrollando su boxeo, que tiene el potencial para ofrecer mucho entretenimiento.

For yet another year, ShoBox: The New Generation continues its mission to deliver well-matched clashes for prospects full of ambition and eager to make themselves known and take their careers to a new level. On this occasion, the season started with an event headlined by the clash between two undefeated boxers with very good amateur careers such as the Americans Sean “Silky” Hemphill 14(8KO)-1(1) and David “Dynamite” Stevens 12(9KO)-0, the later achieving victory by knockout in the eight and final round.
The fighters offered a good and contested clash of styles. Hemphill moved around the ring throwing often an accurate and fast jab, while Stevens tried to pressure him looking for opportunities to land hard power shots.
In the beginning it was the former member of the US team Hempill who seemed to have a little more success based on the regularity of his jabs, although he lacked the forceful hands that would have allowed him to create clear control against a fighter more powerful than him. However, subsequently the U.S. national youth gold medalist Stevens, who had trouble with one of his boots (first his team had to cut a piece of the sole) began to consistently land good right hands and lead hooks that shook his opponent’s head.
With the fight close to a draw before the last two rounds, it seemed that whoever had the most determination and grit would take the victory, and this was Stevens. With Hemphill no longer able to maintain his mobility at this point, he accepted the intense fight sought by his opponent, exchanged at close range with him tenaciously in the seventh round and landed a good number of hooks, highlighting combinations to the body that seemed to hurt his opponent. Stevens, whose sole ended up coming off entirely, got tired but didn’t crumble, instead going all out in the final round and, with less than 20 seconds left, knocking down his opponent with a barrage of hooks.
Hemphill didn’t seem to get up in time, but the referee let him continue, even though he was in no condition, and with a couple of seconds to go Stevens dropped him again with a left hook to achieve the win.
Although Stevens was victorious, the fact is that both fighters left a good image and showed obvious qualities, although the effort of «Dynamite» was commendable. Despite he could be seen walking towards his corner between rounds unsteady due to the problems with his boot, and despite he had a skilled jabber in front of him who had a good first half, Stevens did not lose his way, but maintained his methodical pressure and obtained the knockout even after being hurt.
Thus, Hemphill can certainly bounce back from this defeat and achieve some good successes in the future, while the 22-year-old Stevens has earned a new opportunity on a good card to further progress and develop his boxing, which has the potential to offer plenty of entertainment.
