Chris Eubank Jr. se decanta finalmente por intentar mantener a flote su carrera en revancha ante Liam Smith

Cuando el pasado enero el peso superwélter Liam Smith destruyó en cuatro rounds al peso medio Chris Eubank Jr., este último quedó en una posición muy comprometida. Y es que, Eubank, que ha eludido riesgos durante gran parte de su trayectoria, que se ha quedado corto en sus mayores oportunidades y que está mucho más cerca del final de su carrera que del principio, esta vez no pudo usar la excusa de que había sido un tropiezo controvertido para un boxeador joven y que está aprendiendo. De hecho, aunque desde su equipo se intentaron poner excusas, lo cierto es que su planteamiento táctico fue un despropósito y la muestra de la línea descendente que lleva siguiendo desde hace años.
Por ello, Eubank quedó entre la espada y la pared: tenía la opción de activar una clausula de revancha existente en el contrato de su primera pugna ante Liam Smith, y arriesgarse a sufrir una nueva derrota que rompiese totalmente el poco prestigio que le queda, o intentar perseguir una pugna más lucrativa ante el dopado Conor Benn, quien con su drásticamente aumentada explosividad y pegada era un riesgo importante ante el que también podía sufrir un severo varapalo.
En un principio pareció que Eubank iba a renunciar a la revancha ante Smith y que simplemente iba a decantarse por la opción que más dinero le daba, es decir enfrentarse a Benn, hablándose de que era posible que se pudiese organizar un duelo entre ambos en Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Sin embargo, con el caso Benn embarrándose cada vez más, y el BBBofC amenazando con repercusiones para quienes se enfrentasen a él sin su permiso, la opción de un Smith-Eubank II volvió a la mesa de negociación.
Tanto fue así que hoy se ha confirmado oficialmente que Eubank y Smith se enfrentarán el 17 de junio en el AO Arena de Manchester, Reino Unido. Así, Eubank buscará un triunfo que, más allá de permitirle desquitarse, sería la única forma de mantenerse a flote. Con todo, aunque si gana podrá señalar que su anterior derrota sólo fue un accidente y podrá alcanzar alguna otra pelea con una considerable bolsa (como un posible choque contra el semiretirado Kell Brook), si pierde los pocos que todavía le toman en serio quizás se rindan definitivamente.
Por otro lado, BOXXER también ha anunciado que el combate de semifondo será un encuentro por el título indiscutido del peso supermedio en el que la monarca estadounidense Franchon Crews-Dezurn expondrá sus cuatro cinturones ante la británica Savannah Marshall, que disputará con este su primer duelo desde que fue derrotada por Claressa Shields.

When super welterweight Liam Smith crushed middleweight Chris Eubank Jr. in four rounds last January, the latter was put in a very compromising position: Eubank, who has constantly avoided risks, who has fallen short in his biggest opportunities and who is much closer to the end of his career than to the beginning, this time could not use the excuse that it had been a controversial setback for a young boxer who is learning. So much so that today it has been confirmed that Eubank and Smith will clash on June 17 in the AO Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom. Thus, Eubank will look for a victory that, beyond allowing him to get even, would be the only way to keep his career afloat. Still, while if he wins he’ll be able to point out that his previous loss was just an accident and he will be able to reach another fight with a notable purse (for example in a possible clash against the semi-retired Kell Brook), if he loses the few who still take him seriously maybe will definitely give up.
On the other hand, BOXXER has also announced that the co-feature bout will be a fight for the undisputed super middleweight title in which American champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn will put on the line her four belts against British Savannah Marshall, who will face with this her first fight since she was defeated by Claressa Shields.
