David Morrell aplastó al bronce olímpico Yamaguchi Falcao y apunta a David Benavídez

El combate coestelar del evento Davis-García estaba únicamente pensado para que el cubano David Morrell 9(8KO)-0 hiciese otra demostración de su poder ante los incontables fans que esperaban el choque principal de la velada y que se aumentase el interés por una pugna entre él y David Benavídez. Aun así, aunque no hubo sorpresa en el resultado, el triunfo de Morrell fue mucho más rápido de lo previsto, ya que aplastó al bronce olímpico brasileño Yamaguchi Falcao 24(10KO)-2(1)-1 en el primer asalto.
Poco después del inicio, las excelentes combinaciones de uppercuts y ganchos del zurdo Morrell dañaron a Falcao, hasta el punto que el favorito incluso retrocedió pensando que su adversario iba a caer o que el combate iba a ser parado. No fue así, y Morrell tuvo que volver a dar un paso al frente y conectar un gancho diestro que hizo que Falcao perdiese el equilibrio y fuese sostenido por las cuerdas. Tras la cuenta del árbitro, el cubano persiguió a su contrincante hasta que con un brutal gancho diestro arriba dejó a Falcao tendido boca abajo en la lona y sin posibilidad de continuar.
En principio, lo único que podría impedir que Benavídez y Morrell se enfrentasen sería que el primero lograse su objetivo de pactar una pugna contra Canelo. No obstante, si Álvarez sigue su plan de volver a pelear contra Bivol en septiembre, a Benavídez seguramente no le quedará otra que volver a subirse al ring en la segunda mitad del año intentando añadir méritos para alcanzar la pugna contra Canelo. En este sentido, no habría mejor forma que medirse a Morrell, que es uno de los tres mejores aspirantes de la actualidad en la división y una de las dos mayores promesas en ascenso, además de un compañero de escuadra.

Davis-García co-feature bout was solely planned for Cuban David Morrell 9(8KO)-0 to make another demonstration of his power in front of the countless fans waiting for the main event and increase interest in a fight between him and David Benavídez. Even so, although the final result wasn’t surprising, Morrell’s win came much quicker than expected, as he crushed Brazilian Olympic bronze medalist Yamaguchi Falcao 24(10KO)-2(1)-1 in the first round.
Shortly after the start, excellent uppercut-hook combinations from the southpaw Morrell hurt Falcao, to the point that the favorite even backed off thinking his opponent was going to fall or the fight was going to be stopped. It was not to so, and Morrell had to step forward again and land a right hook upstairs that knocked Falcao off balance, the boxer being held by the ropes. Following the referee’s count, the Cuban pursued his opponent until, with a brutal right hook to the head, he knocked Falcao out cold.
In principle, the only thing that could prevent Benavídez and Morrell from facing each other would be if the former achieved his goal of fighting Canelo. However, if Álvarez follows his plan to face Bivol again in September, Benavídez will surely have no choice but to get back into the ring in the second half of the year looking to add more merits to reach a bout against Canelo. In this sense, there would be no better way than to face Morrell, who is one of the three best current contenders and one of the two best young rising stars in the division, as well as a stablemate.
