El puertorriqueño Derrieck Cuevas venció por KOT al cubano Damián Rodríguez

El prospecto puertorriqueño Derrieck Cuevas 25(17KO)-1-1 sufrió en 2020 un tropiezo contra pronóstico ante Damián Bonelli que fue todo un revés para sus aspiraciones. No obstante, en diciembre de 2022 retornó venciendo a Esneiker Correa (que había logrado una buena victoria en Rusia) y el pasado viernes continuó recuperando impulso descendiendo al peso wélter y superando por KOT en el segundo round al cubano Damián Rodríguez 13(7KO)-2(1).
En el comienzo Rodríguez se desplazó por el ring tirando algunos rectos, la mayoría errados, mientras que Cuevas también hizo algunas pruebas con su jab y su derecha. Tras un primer round con poco que destacar, en el segundo asalto el boricua ya se había adaptado al ritmo de su contrincante y había ajustado su timing de modo que, tras esquivar un jab, conectó una certera combinación directo diestro-gancho zurdo que derribó aparatosamente al cubano. Rodríguez se puso en pie en el ocho de la cuenta y, como no se podía mantener estable, intentó caminar para disimular, tardando en responder a la petición del árbitro de que avanzase hacia él. Finalmente lo hizo, pero el tercer hombre le miró a los ojos y consideró que no podía seguir.
Quizás será necesario esperar un tiempo para ver qué consistencia demuestra Cuevas y si es capaz de mantener este rendimiento ante oponentes más intrincados y motivados, sobre todo si decide afianzarse en el peso wélter. Esta categoría está atestada de boxeadores de un gran nivel y para cualquier púgil es difícil llegar hasta lo más alto, si bien es verdad que la competencia y el interés existentes en ella facilitan que Cuevas pueda recibir pronto buenas oportunidades para intentar poner de manifiesto su evolución.
En el mismo evento que el Cuevas-Rodríguez, otro puertorriqueño, en este caso el peso minimosca René Santiago 11(8KO)-3 se hizo con un importante triunfo por KOT en el noveno asalto sobre el panameño Carlos Ortega 15(6KO)-7(2)-3, resultado que le permitirá ascender de forma notable en el ranking WBO y apuntar a una pugna trascendental en la lucha por acceder al mundial.

Puerto Rican prospect Derrieck Cuevas 25(17KO)-1-1 suffered an upset defeat in 2020 against Damián Bonelli that was a hard setback for his aspirations. However, in December 2022 he returned defeating Esneiker Correa (who had achieved a good victory in Russia) and last Friday he continued to regain momentum moving down to welterweight and beating Cuban Damián Rodríguez 13(7KO)-2(1) by second-round TKO.
In the beginning Rodríguez moved around the ring throwing some straight hands, most of them missed, while Cuevas also made some tests with his jab and his right hand. After a first round with little to highlight, in the second round the Puerto Rican had already adapted to his opponent’s rhythm and had adjusted his timing so, after dodging a jab, he landed an accurate right hand-left hook combination that spectacularly knocked down Rodríguez. The Cuban got up at eight of the count and, since he could not keep stable, he tried to walk to hide it, taking time to respond to the referee’s request to move towards him. He finally did, but the third man in the ring looked him in the eye and considered that he couldn’t continue.
It is necessary to wait to see what consistency Cuevas shows and see if he is able to maintain this performance against more intricate and motivated opponents, especially if he decides to establish himself at welterweight. This weight class is crowded with high-level boxers and it is difficult for any fighter to reach the top, although it is true that the existing competition and interest in it make it easier for Cuevas to soon receive good opportunities to try to prove his evolution.
In the same event as Cuevas-Rodríguez, another Puerto Rican, in this case light flyweight René Santiago 11(8KO)-3, scored an important ninth-round TKO victory over Panamanian Carlos Ortega 15(6KO)-7(2)-3, a result that will allow him to rise significantly in the WBO ranking and aim for a decisive bout in the battle to access the world championship.
