Sobre el papel, parecía que el estadounidense Brian “La Bala” Mendoza 22(16KO)-2 no tenía la habilidad para lidiar satisfactoriamente de forma constante con su compatriota Sebastián “The Towering Inferno” Fundora 20(13KO)-1(1)-1 y que sólo su drásticamente mejorado rendimiento físico, y la tendencia a intercambiar innecesariamente del invicto favorito, le daban una opción de triunfo.
Pues bien, esto fue exactamente así, puesto que Fundora ganó todos los asaltos (las puntuaciones de los jueces eran 60-54, 60-54 y 59-55) antes de que en el séptimo round un descuido en corta le llevase a sufrir una brutal derrota por knockout que le hace perder su posición como aspirante obligatorio WBC del peso superwélter.
Parecía que el plan de Mendoza era confundir y desgastar al espigado Fundora. Para ello, el no favorito intentó caminar por el ring tratando de evitar las ofensivas rivales antes de acortar repentinamente los espacios y conectar un golpe de poder o al menos forcejear en un clinch. No obstante, la estrategia en general fue fallida, ya que en la distancia larga Fundora le alcanzaba con sus largos brazos sin que Mendoza tuviese los recursos defensivos, técnicos o tácticos para evitar las ofensivas, mientras que en la distancia corta “The Towering Inferno” le recibía con duros uppercuts o impactaba más manos claras con series de hooks.
La pelea se desarrolló de esa manera durante seis asaltos, en los que Mendoza cada vez iba a menos, puesto que cada vez recibía más demoledores golpes de poder curvos, en especial uppercuts, que le estaban desgastando y que habían ensangrentado su nariz. Sin embargo, en el séptimo round, cuando parecía que estaba cerca de ser vencido por KOT, un curvo zurdo arriba de “La Bala” dejó muy tocado a Fundora. Éste a duras penas se mantuvo en pie, si bien con la guardia descendida y totalmente expuesto a un gancho diestro al rostro que lo hizo caer aparatosamente de espaldas a la lona. Desde el tapiz Fundora no fue capaz de intentar levantarse, llegándose a la conclusión.
Durante demasiado tiempo Fundora ha jugado con fuego cruzando golpes contra oponentes ante los que tenía enorme ventaja en dimensiones, riesgo absurdo cuyo peligro quedó de manifiesto sobre todo en su knockdown ante Lubin. Por ello, era cuestión de tiempo que alguien terminase noqueándolo duramente. Con todo, fue inesperado que lo lograse Mendoza, que era una púgil muy criticado y con un nivel bastante bajo hace sólo tres años. Aunque es verdad que Mendoza es otro de los púgiles que ha visto aumentado su rendimiento de forma desmesurada, casi mágica, por el entrenador Ismael Salas, cuyos boxeadores muestran mejoras físicas descomunales en cuanto empiezan a trabajar con él.
Sea como sea, a Fundora le tocará ahora la difícil tarea de reconstruir después de que sus vulnerabilidades hayan quedado completamente de manifiesto, lo que llevará a sus próximos contrincantes a atacarle con más ferocidad. Por su parte, Mendoza es ahora uno de los aspirantes obligatorios del campeón indiscutido Jermell Charlo, y si este último deja vacantes sus coronas, incluso se convertirá en monarca mundial de pleno derecho al estar en posesión de un título interino.

On paper, it seemed that American Brian “La Bala” Mendoza 22(16KO)-2 did not have the ability to consistently deal with success with his compatriot Sebastián “The Towering Inferno” Fundora 20(13KO)-1(1)-1 and that only his drastically improved physical performance, and the undefeated favorite’s tendency to trade unnecessarily, gave him a chance.
Well, this was exactly the case, since Fundora won all the rounds (the judges’ scores were 60-54, 60-54 and 59-55) before, in the seventh round, an oversight at short range lead him to suffer a brutal knockout defeat with which he loses his position as a WBC super welterweight mandatory challenger.
It seemed that Mendoza’s plan was to confuse and wear down the tall Fundora. To achieve that objective, the underdog tried to walk around the ring looking to avoid his opponent’s offensives before suddenly closing the distance and landing a power shot or clinching. However, the strategy in general was unsuccessful, since in the long distance Fundora reached him with his long arms without Mendoza having the defensive, technical or tactical resources to avoid the attacks, while at close distance «The Towering Inferno» answered him with hard uppercuts or with combinations of hooks.
After six rounds, Mendoza was the one being worn down, since he received and increasing quantity of hard power shots, especially uppercuts, which were punishing him and bloodying his nose. However, in the seventh round, when it seemed that he was close to being defeated by TKO, a left hook upstairs from «La Bala» badly hurt Fundora. The latter barely stayed on his feet, albeit with his guard down and fully exposed to a right hook to the face that brutally sent him to the canvas. Fundora was not able to try to get up, so the fight ended by knockout.
For too long Fundora has played with fire, exchanging blows against opponents over whom he had a huge advantage in size, an absurd risk whose danger was shown clearly in the knockdown he suffered against Lubin. Therefore, it was a matter of time before someone ended up knocking him out. However, it was unexpected that Mendoza was the fighter who achieved it, as he was a highly criticized boxer, and with a fairly low level, only three years ago. Nevertheless, it is true that Mendoza is another fighter who has seen his performance tremendously increased, almost magically, by the trainer Ismael Salas, whose boxers show immense physical improvements as soon as they start working with him.
Be that as it may, Fundora will now have the difficult task of rebuilding after his vulnerabilities have been fully exposed, which will lead his next opponents to attack him with more ferocity. For his part, Mendoza is now one of the mandatory challengers for undisputed champion Jermell Charlo, and if the latter vacates his crowns, he will even become a full-fledged world monarch due to owning an interim title.
