Previa: Sebastián Fundora se enfrenta a Brian Mendoza mientras Jermell Charlo mantiene estancada la división

En un principio se esperaba que el campeón indiscutido Jermell Charlo afrontase una peligrosa defensa obligatoria ante Tim Tszyu meses atrás. Pero la fecha se ha ido moviendo hasta que realmente ya ni siquiera parece seguro que el combate se vaya a disputar, hablándose de que tentativamente el choque podría tener lugar en agosto o septiembre si no es que a Charlo se le presenta otra oportunidad y deja vacantes sus cinturones.
Por ello, al propio Tszyu y los otros aspirantes obligatorios Israil Madrimov, Bakhram Murtazaliev y Sebastián “The Towering Inferno” Fundora 20(13KO)-0-1, más un nutrido grupo de contendientes como Jesús Ramos, Charles Conwell o Liam Smith, no les queda otra que esperar a que el estancamiento en la cumbre de la división termine de una u otra manera, tarde o temprano. Hablando del citado Fundora, éste se subirá al ring el sábado en el Dignity Health Sports Park de Carson, Estados Unidos, enfrentándose al también estadounidense Brian “La Bala” Mendoza 21(15KO)-2 en una nueva eliminatoria WBC con título interino en juego.
Mendoza es uno de esos boxeadores que de la noche a la mañana dio un vuelco a su rendimiento, pasando de ser derrotado por Larry Gómez y ganar con mucha controversia a Thomas LaManna a aguantar inesperadamente bien contra el insigne prospecto “Mono” Ramos y destruir al exmonarca unificado Jeison Rosario. Por ello, y teniendo en cuenta que Fundora renuncia absurda y constantemente a su descomunal ventaja en dimensiones para intercambiar en corta con boxeadores mucho más pequeños que él, algo que ya le ha costado algún que otro susto, no se puede decir que las posibilidades de éxito de Mendoza sean completamente inexistentes.
Aun así, en las apuestas Fundora parte como amplio favorito, considerándose que tiene la suficiente resistencia al cansancio, cadencia de golpes y manejo de las peleas intensas como para derrotar a un Mendoza que, pese a su drástica mejora física, podría no tener los recursos necesarios para lidiar satisfactoriamente de forma constante con las andanadas de un boxeador ni mucho menos tan quebradizo como Rosario.
Lee y “Twist”
La cartelera principal emitida por Showtime también contará con los prospectos Brandun Lee 27(23KO)-0 y Luis “Twist” Núñez 18(13KO)-0, que combatirán en peleas separadas. En el semifondo, el peso superligero estadounidense Lee, que no convenció a todos con sus actuaciones ante Zachary Ochoa y Will Madera (que le derribó duramente), intentará poner de manifiesto que tiene tanto o más potencial que Teófimo López en la división enfrentándose al mexicano Pedro Campa 34(23KO)-2(2)-1, que fue batido por el citado excampeón mundial por KOT en el séptimo asalto el pasado agosto.
Por su parte, el peso pluma dominicano Núñez buscará mantener su exitoso recorrido en tierras estadounidenses, donde ha logrado tres victorias sobre invictos en combates a diez rounds, enfrentándose a un púgil imbatido más como el mexicano Christian Olivo 20(7KO)-0-1, un boxeador joven y motivado pero que nunca ha peleado fuera de su país, que no con cuenta experiencia de gran nivel y que tiene desventaja en pegada.
Showtime televisará estos combates en Estados Unidos el sábado desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT, las 4:00 de la madrugada en España.

Undisputed champion Jermell Charlo was originally expected to face a dangerous mandatory defense against Tim Tszyu months ago. But the date has been moved in the schedule so many times that it simply does not even seem certain that the fight will take place. There is talk that the clash could tentatively take place in August or September, but only if Charlo does not find another opportunity and vacates his belts.
For this reason, Tszyu and the also mandatory challengers Israil Madrimov, Bakhram Murtazaliev and Sebastián «The Towering Inferno» Fundora 20(13KO)-0-1, plus a large group of contenders such as Jesús Ramos, Charles Conwell or Liam Smith, have no choice but to wait for the stalemate at the top of the division to end one way or another, sooner or later. Speaking of the aforementioned Fundora, he will step into the ring on Saturday at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, United States, facing fellow American Brian «La Bala» Mendoza 21(15KO)-2 in a new WBC eliminator with the interim title at stake.
Mendoza is one of those fighters who drastically improved his performance overnight: he was beaten by Larry Gomez and controversially defeated Thomas LaManna, and then, unexpectedly, he resisted well against top prospect «Mono» Ramos and destroyed former unified titlist Jeison Rosario. For this reason, and taking into account that Fundora absurdly and constantly gives up his enormous advantage in size to exchange at close range with boxers much smaller than him, something that has already cost him some scares, it cannot be said that the Mendoza’s chances are completely non-existent.
Even so, Fundora is as a solid betting favorite considering that he has enough stamina, work rate and efficiency in intense fights to defeat Mendoza, who despite his drastic physical improvement, might not have the technical resources necessary to deal satisfactorily on a constant basis with the barrages of a boxer far from being as chinny as Rosario.
Lee and “Twist”
The Showtime main card will also feature prospects Brandun Lee 27(23KO)-0 and Luis “Twist” Núñez 18(13KO)-0, who will fight in separate bouts. In the co-main event, American super lightweight Lee, who did not convince everyone with his performances against Zachary Ochoa and Will Madera (who knocked him down hard), will try to show that he has as much or more potential than Teófimo López in the division facing Mexican Pedro Campa 34(23KO)-2(2)-1, who was beaten by the aforementioned former world champion by seventh-round TKO last August.
For his part, Dominican featherweight Núñez will seek to maintain his successful run on the US, where he has achieved three victories over undefeated boxers in ten-rounders, battling one more unbeaten fighter like Mexican Christian Olivo 20(7KO)-0-1, a young and motivated boxer but who has never fought outside his country, who does not have high-level experience and who has less power.
Showtime will televise these fights in the United States on Saturday from 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT, 3:00 a.m. in the UK.
