By moving up again to middleweight, the Dominican, former unified world champion, Jeison “Banana” Rosario 23(17KO)-4(4)-1 intended to begin a successful new chapter in his career after stoppage losses against Charlo and Lubin. However, this move ended with an even more serious setback, as American stepping stone Brian “La Bala” Mendoza 21(15KO)-2, who entered the fight as a late substitute, dropped him in the second round and knocked him out in the fifth.

In the first round Rosario seemed to achieve better results than his opponent with his power shots to the face, but in the second round a left hook to the liver brought him to his knees, his limited resistance to body shots being well known. However, the Dominican got up and in the third and fourth rounds he worked well again with his uppercuts, with his hooks up and down and with some straight shots despite occasional accurate counterpunches by Mendoza. Thus Rosario recovered lost ground in the scorecards, but the fight was not going to reach a decision.

In the fifth round a brutal right uppercut from Mendoza crashed against Rosario, who fell to the canvas. The former world champion tried to get up but fell to the mat again, so the referee stopped the bout.

Given that Mendoza replaced in the match the injured Yoelvis Gómez, it would be a good option to make both fighters face each other once the Cuban has recovered. Leaving aside this possibility, the fact is that, with his victory against Rosario, Mendoza made a statement that will surely allow him to reach the biggest fight of his career to date next year.
