Como ya adelantamos hace unos días en el estado de la división del peso medio, el campeón mundial WBO Janibek Alimkhanuly afrontará su segunda defensa del título ante el canadiense Steven Butler. Esto ha sido ya confirmado oficialmente por Top Rank, que informó de que el duelo se producirá en el Stockton Arena de Stockton, Estados Unidos, televisado por ESPN.
Si bien este encuentro es una defensa voluntaria que se produce antes de un proyectado combate más significativo para el campeón en la segunda mitad del año, el hecho es que la pelea ilustra dos cosas: que el nivel medio de los aspirantes en la división es realmente bajo actualmente y que siguen los problemas de Alimkhanuly para encontrar oponentes que acepten enfrentarse a él y a su balanza riesgo/beneficio.
En cualquier caso, aunque Butler entrará muy por detrás en las apuestas, sobre todo recordándose sus derrotas ante Murata y José de Jesús Macías, al menos es un boxeador que va hacia adelante y que tiene pegada y mala defensa, lo que garantiza duros golpes de poder antes de un probable desenlace antes del límite.
Por otro lado, en cuanto al semifondo, se producirá un enfrentamiento potencialmente más disputado e interesante entre el australiano Jason Moloney y el filipino Vincent Astrolabio. Estos motivados boxeadores, en gran estado de forma y que encadenan buenas actuaciones combatirán por el vacante cinturón mundial WBO del peso gallo, y por lo tanto coronarán al primer campeón de la era post-Inoue en la categoría.
En el anuncio oficial Alimkhanuly destacó que al menos Butler aceptó el reto:
“Todos los peso medio han salido corriendo, así que le doy a Steven Butler mucho crédito por aceptar la pelea. Quiero unificar la división, pero no puedo pasar por alto a Butler. Es un retador duro y potente, y estoy deseando ofrecerles un espectáculo tremendo a los fans en Stockton y a los que lo miren por ESPN”.
Por su parte, Butler simplemente dijo:
“No se ahorrarán detalles para este campamento de entrenamiento. Esperad una gran sorpresa el 13 de mayo. Confío en que traeré de vuelta el cinturón a Quebec”.
En cuanto a Moloney, éste afirmó:
“El 13 de mayo me convertiré en campeón del mundo. Diecinueve años de duro trabajo, incontables sacrificios y completa dedicación al deporte se reducen a este momento. Haré lo que sea necesario para tener este título mundial alrededor de mi cintura, nada me parará. Quiero agradecer mucho a Top Rank y a mi equipo por darme esta oportunidad”.
Finalmente, Astrolabio señaló:
“Desde que empecé a boxear mi sueño ha sido pelear por un título mundial, y los sueños se hacen realidad con trabajo duro. He imaginado este momento una y otra vez en mi cabeza, y no se me negará el título mundial. Quiero darle las gracias a mi promotor, Manny Pacquiao, y a Sean Gibbons por conseguirme esta oportunidad al título mundial WBO del peso gallo”.

As we reported a few days ago in the status of the middleweight division, the WBO world champion Janibek Alimkhanuly will face his second title defense against Canadian Steven Butler. This has already been officially confirmed by Top Rank, which informed that the duel will take place at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, United States, televised by ESPN.
While this matchup is a voluntary defense that comes ahead of a more significant bout projected for the champion in the second half of the year, the fact is that the fight illustrates two things: that the average level of contenders in the division is currently really low and that Alimkhanuly’s problems to find opponents who accept to face him, and his risk/reward balance, continue.
In any case, although Butler will be an obvious underdog, especially considering his defeats against Murata and José de Jesús Macías, at least he is a boxer who moves forward and has punch and a bad defense, which guarantees hard power punches before a probable stoppage.
On the other hand, as for the co-feature, it will be a potentially more disputed and interesting clash between Australian Jason Moloney and Filipino Vincent Astrolabio. These motivated boxers, in great shape and who string strong performances, will fight for the vacant WBO world bantamweight belt, thus crowning the first champion of the post-Inoue era in the weight class.
In the official announcement Alimkhanuly stressed that at least Butler accepted the challenge:
“All of the middleweights have run scared, so I give Steven Butler a lot of credit for accepting the fight. I want to unify the division, but I cannot overlook Butler. He is a tough, powerful challenger, and I look forward to giving a tremendous show to the fans in Stockton and those watching on ESPN.”
For his part, Butler simply said:
“No detail will be spared in this training camp. Expect a big upset on May 13. I am confident that I will bring the belt back to Quebec.”
As for Moloney, he stated:
“On May 13 I will become champion of the world. Nineteen years of hard work, countless sacrifices, and complete dedication to the sport all come down to this moment. Whatever it takes to have this world championship wrapped around my waist, nothing will stop me. I want to say a big thank you to Top Rank and my team for giving me this opportunity.”
Lastly, Astrolabio said:
“Ever since I started boxing my dream was to fight for a world title, and dreams do come true with hard work. I have played this moment over and over in my head, and I will not be denied the world title. I want to thank my promoter, Manny Pacquiao, and Sean Gibbons for getting me this WBO bantamweight world title shot.”
