Mbilli quedó tocado dos veces ante Góngora, pero mostró dureza y determinación en victoria unánime

La compañía Eye of the Tiger Management quería que el prometedor supermedio franco-camerunés Christian “Solide” Mbilli 24(20KO)-0 fuese puesto a prueba ante un rival que ha demostrado su dureza y nivel competitivo como el ecuatoriano Carlos Góngora 21(16KO)-2, y vaya si fue un test exigente. Góngora dejó dos veces tocado a Mbilli y le asestó más golpes claros que en casi toda su carrera junta, si bien el favorito reaccionó y terminó haciéndose con una merecida victoria por decisión unánime. Las puntuaciones fueron un justo 97-93 y excesivos 98-92 y 99-91.
Como siempre, Mbilli arrancó con intensidad buscando acortar los espacios y, desde la distancia media y corta, imponer sus contundentes golpes de poder. Con todo, el zurdo Góngora le recibió con precisos y astutos uppercuts de espaldas a las cuerdas, logrando con uno de estos puños dejar seriamente tocado a Mbilli en el segundo round. De hecho, el invicto terminó cayendo a la lona, si bien después de un empujón por parte de Góngora. En cualquier caso, el combate había comenzado como un serio reto para el franco-camerunés y de su reacción dependía mantener vivas sus aspiraciones.
En esta situación, Mbilli no se arrugó, ni mucho menos, sino que continuó arremetiendo contra su oponente, si cabe con más dureza aún, alcanzándolo con potentes hooks de ambas manos arriba y abajo que por frecuencia y claridad superaron al trabajo de Góngora. Así, si bien su rival seguía contragolpeando con cierto peligro, Mbilli no sólo recuperó el terreno perdido sino que remontó en las cartulinas y amenazó con generar daños importantes a medio plazo.
No obstante, Góngora, que mostró una resistencia increíble, lidió con el castigo, y pasada la mitad volvió a tener buenos éxitos a la contra antes de que, en el octavo asalto, uno de sus uppercuts zurdos nuevamente pusiese en serios apuros a Mbilli. De todos modos, en ese mismo round, “Solide” respondió con fiereza y dejó tocado con sus hooks a Góngora, que en los últimos asaltos estuvo desgastado y, pese a algún intento desesperado final, pareció cerca del KOT por las andanadas de brutales curvos de Mbilli.
La pelea le mostró a Mbilli que tiene un punto débil en cuanto a los uppercuts por su forma de plantear las ofensivas. Es decir, todo púgil de presión que busca acortar los espacios es susceptible de ser contragolpeado por un uppercut, pero en su caso lo es más por su forma de posicionar su torso y su cabeza al intentar presionar. Además, el choque también puso de manifiesto que en el nivel alto se encontrará a muchos púgiles a los que no podrá abrumar sólo por fuerza y potencia.
De todos modos, cuando fue puesto en una posición crítica, Mbilli reaccionó de forma ideal en cuanto a mostrar tenacidad y garra, y aprovechó sus cualidades físicas para finalmente hacerse con una merecida victoria ante un oponente que ofreció una buena versión de sí mismo. Por ello, además de ser un combate entretenido, este choque habrá servido para darles necesarias respuestas a Mbilli y a su equipo respecto a en qué deben apoyarse y en qué deben de mejorar de cara a una pelea trascendental que, por su posición de número 2 WBC, está a la vuelta de la esquina.
En cuanto al respaldo, tanto el peso superligero Steve Claggett 34(24KO)-7(1)-2 como el peso pesado Simon Kean 23(22KO)-1(1) se impusieron antes del límite, ambos en el séptimo round, al mexicano Rafael “Furioso” Guzmán 26(16KO)-3(1)-2 y el estadounidense Eric Molina 29(21KO)-9(9), respectivamente, por lo que quedaron listos para pugnas más significativas.
