Tras la disolución de Probellum, el oscuro oportunista Richard Schaefer ya tiene nuevo proyecto

El prolongado silencio de Probellum finalmente se hizo permanente, puesto que la compañía, que había fichado a decenas de nombres de relieve (como Regis Prograis, O’Shaquie Foster o Sunny Edwards, entre muchísimos otros) finalmente se disolvió. En esto jugó un papel clave que se relacionase a su cofundador y presidente ejecutivo Richard Schaefer con un personaje en búsqueda y captura como Daniel Kinahan, existiendo incluso fotos de ambos juntos en Dubái.
Al menos parte de lo que fue Probellum (que a su vez absorbió parte de MTK Global) ahora está en posesión de la nueva compañía Disrupt Promotions, si bien no está claro si algunos de los púgiles de más relieve podrían tener una ventana abierta para evitar quedar bajo el control de esa compañía y aliarse con otras promotoras. En cualquier caso, el hecho es que, cuando un barco se hunde, o mejor dicho cuando es hundido por Schaefer, éste siempre encuentra una forma de mantenerse a flote.
Aunque en su primer puesto importante, en Golden Boy Promotions, traicionó a Óscar de la Hoya y le arrebató gran parte de los miembros de su escuadra para dárselos a Al Haymon (que así fundó PBC), y en su segundo proyecto importante los arriba supuestos vínculos con el crimen acabaron con Probellum, ahora Schaefer ha fichado por Anthem Sports & Entertainment Inc., que directamente lo ha convertido en presidente de su rama deportiva, que ahora se llamará Anthem Sports Group. Esta incluye lucha libre, MMA y una plataforma de suscripción, si bien el plan ahora es introducirse con fuerza en el boxeo.
En fin, muchos se preguntarán, ¿por qué motivo alguien querría relacionarse con un individuo con tantas sombras como Schaefer, especialmente después de que sus supuestas relaciones con un supuesto delincuente hundiesen su anterior empresa?
La respuesta sólo la tiene Anthem Sports, pero lo que está claro es que la imagen que tienen algunos respecto a la corrupción en el boxeo es irreal: las páginas oscuras no las hacen señores con tirantes y puros que se esconden en sótanos húmedos o grises almacenes y que tienen un puñado de brutos como matones, sino personajes con trajes carísimos y vinculados a lobbies y al mundo de las finanzas que se pavonean en grandes recintos y viven en palacios en Suiza, en mansiones en Los Ángeles, en rascacielos en Dubái o Nueva York…

Probellum’s long silence finally became permanent, as the company, which had signed dozens of big names (such as Regis Prograis, O’Shaquie Foster or Sunny Edwards, among many others) finally dissolved. In the end of the company was key the fact that its co-founder and CEO Richard Schaefer was linked to alleged criminal Daniel Kinahan, both being pictured together in Dubai.
At least part of what was Probellum (which in turn absorbed part of MTK Global) is now owned by the new company Disrupt Promotions, though it’s unclear if some of the boxers might have a window open to avoid being under the control of that company and start alliances with other promoters. In any case, the fact is that when a ship sinks, or rather when it is sunk by Schaefer, he always finds a way to stay afloat.

Only Anthem Sports Group has the answer to that question, but what is clear is that the image that some have regarding corruption in boxing is unreal: the dark pages of the sport are not made by men with suspenders and cigars who hide in damp basements or gray warehouses and have a handful of brutes as henchmen, but men in expensive suits and linked to lobbies and the world of finance who show off in important venues and live in palaces in Switzerland, in mansions in Los Angeles, in skyscrapers in Dubai or New York…
