Jack Martin ganó excelente batalla ante Shaquille Day y consiguió el cinto Southern Area

En la misma velada en la que se produjo el campeonato inglés Purkiss-Mahmood, los peso superwélter Jack “Ginger” Martin 7(2KO)-1 y Shaquille “The Black Mexican” Day 15(2KO)-3(1) ofrecieron una excelente guerra en la que ambos fueron estremecidos y en la que hubo una gran cantidad de intercambios. Finalmente, el juez-árbitro dio un acertado 97-93 que le sirvió a Martin para lograr el triunfo y capturar el vacante título Southern Area.
Desde el comienzo la pugna resultó un interesante choque de estilos. En el primer round Martin impuso su acometividad a través de claros directos diestros y ganchos zurdos, mientras que el segundo Day contragolpeó con mucha precisión con uppercuts y hooks para hacerse respetar. Esto desembocó en un tremendo tercer round en el que ambos quedaron tocados: primero Martin pareció sufrir los efectos de un contragolpe, posteriormente pasó a la carga y dañó en las cuerdas a Day y finalmente este último volvió a replicar con dureza para estremecer a su contrincante.
Ese asalto mostró de forma evidente que era una pelea disputada, emocionante y con buenos intercambios, en los que ambos conectaban golpes de poder curvos con notable continuidad. De todos modos, poco a poco Martin empezó a trabajar de forma más firme que su oponente gracias a una superior cadencia de golpes, llegando con derechazos y ganchos zurdos nítidos de manera muy insistente. Pero la pugna no pasó a ser fácil para Martin, que igualmente tuvo que aplicarse a fondo ante un Day que contestaba con habilidad, siendo ambos sacudidos en un intercambio al final del sexto episodio.
En el séptimo round el volumen de golpes de su oponente pareció empezar a abrumar a Day, que fue puesto en apuros de espaldas al ensogado, pero para el siguiente episodio ya volvió a cruzar golpes con garra e incluso entonces fue Martin quien se vio un tanto hostigado. Llegada la pugna a los últimos episodios, pese a la ventaja de Martin en la tarjeta, todavía no estaba todo decidido, especialmente existiendo la posibilidad de que uno de ambos pudiese verse en apuros en cualquier momento. Con todo, Martin siguió apretando en los últimos episodios, pese a un intento de remontada de Day, y se terminó asegurando el triunfo.
En su segundo intento (en el primero perdió por mínima diferencia), Martin capturó el título de Area y se emplazó a nuevos retos en su carrera profesional, y quién sabe si en un futuro no muy lejano podría disputar el título inglés, quizás cuando Sam Gilley lo deje vacante. Pero lo más importante del combate fue que ambos boxeadores mostraron su garra y su capacidad para generar entretenimiento y que seguramente muchos fans que presenciaron el duelo estarán deseosos de volverlos a ver subirse al ring.

On the same evening in which the Purkiss-Mahmood fight took place, super welterweights Jack “Ginger” Martin 7(2KO)-1 and Shaquille “The Black Mexican” Day 15(2KO)-3(1) offered an excellent war in which both were rocked and there was a great amount of exchanges. Finally, the judge-referee scored the bout with a fair 97-93 that served Martin to achieve victory and capture the vacant Southern Area title.
From the beginning the fight was an interesting clash of styles. In the first round Martin imposed his aggressiveness through clean right hands and left hooks, while in the second Day countered with great precision with uppercuts and hooks. This led to a tremendous third round in which both were hurt: first Martin seemed to suffer the effects of a counterpunch, then he charged and rocked Day on the ropes and finally the latter answer hard again to shake his opponent.
That round clearly showed that it was an even, contested, exciting fight with good exchanges, in which both connected power punches in hook with remarkable continuity. However, little by little Martin began to work more firmly than his opponent thanks to a superior punch rate, landing crisp right hands and left hooks very persistently. But the fight did not become easy for Martin, who still had to apply himself against an opponent who answered with skill, and both were rocked in an exchange at the end of the sixth episode.
In the seventh round his opponent’s punch output seemed to start to overwhelm Day, who was put in difficulties with his back on the ropes, but by the next round he trade punches with grit and then it was Martin who looked somewhat in trouble. When the fight reached the last rounds, despite Martin’s advantage on the card, his win wasn’t unavoidable, especially considering the possibility that one of the two could be decisively hurt. All in all, Martin kept pressing in the last few rounds, despite a comeback attempt from Day, and ended up securing the win.
In his second attempt (in the first he lost by narrow difference), Martin captured the Area title and now will aim for new challenges in his professional career; maybe in the not too distant future he could fight for the English title, perhaps when Sam Gilley vacates it. But the most important thing about Friday’s fight was that both boxers showed their tenacity and their ability to generate entertainment and surely many fans who watched the bout will be eager to see them get into the ring again.
