Lenier Peró tuvo floja actuación pero evitó la derrota con KOT en acción aislada ante Viktor Faust

Era perfectamente posible considerar antes del combate que el cubano Lenier Peró 9(6KO)-0 podía imponerse por detención al ucraniano Viktor Faust 11(7KO)-1(1), resultado que finalmente es el que tuvo el combate. Con todo, la forma en que se produjo el triunfo de Peró por KOT en el octavo round fue inesperada y llegó tras una actuación en general nada convincente.
La pelea comenzó con ambos boxeadores lanzandose directos desde la distancia media y larga, pareciendo primero que el zurdo Peró, que posee destreza, velocidad y astucia, era algo más eficaz con su izquierda recta y sus bloqueos. Sin embargo, el fuerte y grande Faust estaba siendo competitivo y cada vez se apoyaba en una mayor cadencia de golpes y ajustaba mejor su timing, logrando en el final del tercer round dejar seriamente tocado al cubano con un gancho zurdo que dobló su cuello. En adelante Peró fue varias veces estremecido por largos directos diestros y por certeros hooks de mano adelantada en intercambios.
Daba la sensación de que Peró no tenía la pegada suficiente para causar los daños que necesitaba, o al menos parecía que no contaba con el encaje para lidiar con la contundencia de Faust. Además, el cubano no estaba en un gran estado de forma, dando muestras de cansancio claras y de temprana pérdida de ritmo y rapidez, y no supo manejarse ante los constantes directos de variable potencia que Faust lanzaba para mantenerlo ocupado antes de desplegar sus golpes de poder.
Las oportunidades para contragolpear fueron evidentes, aunque Peró no supo verlas y tampoco supo ajustar. Con todo, en el octavo asalto, cuando el ucraniano estaba muy cerca de asegurarse el triunfo a los puntos, un gancho diestro golpeó de refilón el torso de Faust antes de que una izquierda recta le diese en el rostro, tras lo cual el púgil se giró confuso dejando de encarar a su rival. Esto lo aprovechó Peró para lanzar directos y ganchos que Faust ni siquiera intentó bloquear y que llevaron al árbitro a detener el enfrentamiento.
Sobre el papel, Peró ha logrado una muy buena victoria, pero el hecho es que perfectamente podría haber perdido su récord invicto el sábado y que, como no mejore su condición física y su gestión táctica, en el siguiente paso adelante significativo que encare podría quedarse muy corto.

It was perfectly possible to consider before the fight that Cuban Lenier Peró 9(6KO)-0 could defeat the Ukrainian Viktor Faust 11(7KO)-1(1) by stoppage, the result that the fight ended up having. However, the way in which Peró’s eighth-round TKO victory happened was unexpected and came after an overall unconvincing performance.
The fight began with both boxers throwing straight punches from medium and long range. Then it seemed that the southpaw Peró, who has skill, speed and cunning, was being somewhat more effective with his straight left hands and his blocking. Nevertheless, the strong and big Faust was being competitive and each time he relied on a greater work rate and better adjusted his timing, seriously hurting the Cuban at the end of the third round with a hard left hook to the head. From then on, Peró was rocked several times by long right hands and by accurate lead hooks in exchanges.
It looked like Peró did not have enough punch to cause the damage he needed, or at least it seemed that he did not have the chin to deal with Faust’s forcefulness. In addition, the Cuban was not in great shape, showing clear signs of fatigue and an early loss of punch output and speed, and he did not know how to deal with the constant straight hands of variable power that Faust threw to keep him busy before unleashing his power shots.
The opportunities to counterpunch were evident, although Peró did not saw them and he did not know how to adjust either. Still, in the eighth round, when the Ukrainian was very close to securing the win on points, a right hook barely hit Faust’s body before a straight left struck him in the face, blows after which the fighter turned confused. Peró took advantage of this to launch straight left hands and right hooks that Faust did not even try to block and that led the referee to stop the match.
On paper, Peró has achieved a very good victory, but the fact is that he could very well have lost his unbeaten record on Saturday and that, if he does not improve his physical condition and his tactical management, he could fall very short in his next significant step up.
