Matchroom Boxing ha confirmado dos de las peleas que respaldarán el retorno de Anthony Joshua ante Jermaine Franklin el 1 de abril en el O2 Arena. Estas serán, por un lado, el choque del peso semipesado entre el exretador mundial británico Craig Richards y el fogueado letón Ricards Bolotniks, y por el otro, el campeonato de Europa del peso medio entre el veteranísimo titular Matteo Signani y el invicto retador Felix Cash.
El Richards-Bolotniks se suponía que se iba a producir en el respaldo del evento Whyte-Franklin en noviembre, pero una enfermedad de Richards impidió que tuviese lugar. Finalmente, cinco meses después terminará disputándose, siendo claro favorito en la pugna Richards, que viene de perder ajustadamente ante un Joshua Buatsi que noqueó a Bolotniks.
En cuanto al Signani-Cash, el segundo de ambos estaba emplazado a enfrentarse al imbatido estadounidense Austin “Ammo” Williams, produciéndose en diciembre incluso un cara a cara y un empujón del británico contra su rival. Sin embargo, dado que en el evento en el que sucedió esto Cash tuvo una muy floja actuación ante el portugués Celso Neves, el equipo del excampeón de Reino Unido ha decidido aplazar (o cancelar) el choque ante Williams hasta que coseche una fácil victoria ante un Signani al borde del retiro y que, más allá de algunos extraños e inesperados estallidos de potencia, en los últimos años ha tenido en general un rendimiento realmente bajo.
En la confirmación de estos combates sólo se incluyeron declaraciones de Richards y Cash, afirmando el primero:
“Espero una gran pelea con Bolotniks. Es un buen peleador y mucha gente lo sabe, lo que me permitirá mostrar lo buen boxeador que soy. Estoy emocionado por ser parte de esta cartelera, es irónico que sea en el retorno de Joshua porque yo siento que es como mi retorno también. Una victoria contra Bolotniks me situará de lleno en la lucha con los grandes y buscando acercarme hacia cosas grandes”.
Respecto a Cash, éste señaló:
“2022 fue un año duro para mí personalmente pero estoy decidido a hacer de este mi año. En 2023 voy a por todos los cinturones y quiero los mayores combates posibles, comenzando por el título europeo en el O2. El trabajo que he estado haciendo en el gimnasio con Tony Sims ha sido fantástico y nunca me he sentido mejor, el 1 de abril todo el mundo va a ver que lo valgo”.

Matchroom Boxing has confirmed two of the fights that will support Anthony Joshua’s return against Jermaine Franklin on April 1 at the O2 Arena. These will be, on the one hand, the light heavyweight clash between British former world title challenger Craig Richards and seasoned Latvian Ricards Bolotniks and, on the other, the European middleweight championship between the very veteran titleholder Matteo Signani and the undefeated challenger Felix Cash.
The Richards-Bolotniks fight was supposed to take place in Whyte-Franklin’s undercard in November, but Richards suffered an illness that prevented it from happening. Finally, five months later, the bout will end up taking place, with Richards being the clear favorite, as he is coming from a close defeat to Joshua Buatsi, who knocked out Bolotniks.
As for the Signani-Cash fight, the latter was supposed to face undefeated American Austin «Ammo» Williams next, and in December both boxers were even seen in a face-to-face in which the British pushed his rival. However, since in the event in which this happened Cash had a very weak performance against the Portuguese Celso Neves, the team of the former British champion has decided to postpone (or cancel) the clash against Williams until he achieves an easy victory over Signani, a boxer on the verge of retirement and that, apart from some strange and unexpected bursts of power, in recent years has generally had really poor performances.
In the confirmation of these bouts only quotes by Richards and Cash were included, the former stating:
“I’m expecting a great fight with Bolotniks,” said Richards. “He is a good fighter and a lot of people know that which will allow me to showcase how good of a fighter I am. I’m excited to be on this card, it’s ironic it’s the return of Joshua because I feel like it’s my return too. A win against Bolotniks puts me heavily in the mix with the big boys and looking to push on to big things.”
Regarding Cash, he said:
“2022 was a tough one for me personally but I’m determined to make this my year. In 2023 I’m coming for all the belts and want the biggest fights possible, starting with the European Title at The O2. The work I’ve been putting in the gym with Tony Sims has been fantastic and I’ve never felt better, come April 1 everyone is going to see that I’m the real deal.”
