Las trampas de Josh Warrington no le bastaron para retener su cinturón mundial ante “El Venado” López

Cualquiera que hubiese visto los últimos combates del mexicano Luis Alberto “El Venado” López 27(15KO)-2 y entendiese bien cuál era el estilo de ambos púgiles podía esperar que el británico Josh Warrington 31(8KO)-2(1)-1 se encontrarse el sábado con una muy difícil pugna, como así fue. En ella, Warrington fue superado por la contundencia, la combatividad y la heterodoxia de López, que lidió con las trampas de su rival, con un árbitro corrupto y con unas puntuaciones absurdas de 114-114 y sólo doble 115-113 para coronarse campeón mundial.
Desde el primer asalto López arremetió lanzando nada ortodoxos golpes de poder volados o en uppercut, logrando con su potencia y sus poco convencionales trayectorias de golpeo alcanzar a Warrington y provocarle una hemorragia nasal. El campeón intentó tanto moverse y contragolpear como parar sus pies y cruzar golpes, pero en ambos escenarios recibió manos muy peligrosas. Por su parte, los mayores daños que generó Warrington fueron, como siempre, los que provocó con sus cabezazos (López padeció un corte en el segundo round).
Pese a su inferioridad, es justo decir que Warrington puso voluntad con alguna eventual contraofensiva, pero López le recibió con durísimos hooks arriba y abajo y pronto volvió a lanzar nuevas embestidas que castigaron al local, especialmente abajo. “The Leeds Warrior” mostró resistencia luchando frente a su público, pero aunque aguantó e hizo todo lo que pudo, legal e ilegal, para intentar contener a López, como entrar con la cabeza antes de agarrarse y golpear entre forcejeos, nada le daba resultados consistentes sobre los golpes de poder del “Venado”.
Evidentemente, Warrington necesitaba un punto de inflexión, pero ¿cómo iba a conseguirlo ante un púgil mucho más potente y que podía soportar mejor que él los puños? Así que no le quedó otra que embarrar las acciones con marrullerías, intentar confundir con sus agarres mientras buscaba manos oportunistas y esperar un golpe de suerte. De ese modo, en el tramo final logró capturar algunos asaltos y en el undécimo episodio tuvo su mayores éxitos encadenando cabezazos con hooks a la cara y la nuca. Pero aunque cargó a la desesperada en el último round no logró derribar a López.
Con este triunfo como visitante López ha culminado una excelente remontada en su carrera, en la que, de ser considerado algo así como una piedra de toque unos años atrás, ha pasado a convertirse en un campeón mundial batiendo a un púgil de relieve. Así, para López se abren las puertas a las máximas oportunidades en la división del peso pluma, mientras Warrington sigue un constante declive que con cada duelo que pasa le lleva hacia una crisis más profunda.

Anyone who had seen the last fights of the Mexican Luis Alberto «El Venado» López 27(15KO)-2 and, who understood well the style of both fighters, could expect that the British Josh Warrington 31(8KO)-2(1)-1 was going to have a very hard fight on Saturday. Indeed, Warrington had a really difficult bout in which he was surpassed by the forcefulness, aggressiveness and unconventional boxing of López, who dealt with his opponent’s dirty boxing, with a corrupt referee and absurd scorecards of 114-114 and just double 115-113 to become world champion.
From the first round, López lunged and threw unorthodox power shots in uppercut and hook, managing to hit Warrington with his unconventional punching angles and causing him a nosebleed. The champion tried to move and counterpunch as well as to stop his feet and trade punches, but in both tactical scenarios he received very dangerous hands. For his part, the champion generated more damage, as always, with his headbutts (López suffered a cut in the second round).
Despite his inferiority, it is fair to say that Warrington put will through some counteroffensives, but López answered him with very hard hooks up and down and soon returned to launch new attacks that punished the local, especially with body shots. «The Leeds Warrior» showed resistance fighting in front of his fans but, although he dealt with the punches and did everything he could, legal and illegal, to try to contain López, such as charging head first before grabbing and hitting, nothing was working for him consistently to overcome Venado’s power punches.
Clearly, Warrington needed a turning point, but how was he going to reach it against a fighter who was much more powerful and could take punches better than him? So he had no choice but cunningly try to confuse with his holds while looking for opportunistic hands and hope for a lucky break. In the final stretch Warrington managed to capture some rounds and in the eleventh he had his best moments chaining headbutts with hooks to the face and the back of the head. But though he desperately charged in the final round he failed to knock Lopez down.
With this victory as a visitor, López has culminated an excellent comeback in his career, in which, from being considered something like a stepping stone a few years ago, he has gone on to become a world champion beating a well known fighter. Thus, for López the doors are now open to reach the biggest fights in the featherweight division, while Warrington is in a constant decline that with each bout leads him towards a deeper crisis.
