Previa: Teófimo López y Sandor Martín pelean por acceder a mundial del peso superligero

Curiosamente, la víctima de una de las mayores sorpresas del año 2021, el estadounidense Teófimo López 17(13KO)-1, y el protagonista de uno de los triunfos contra pronóstico más importantes de esa misma temporada, el español Sandor Martín 40(13KO)-2, se verán las caras este sábado. Además, no lo harán en cualquier momento o lugar, sino que encabezarán una velada en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, Estados Unidos, en una fecha que se ha convertido en clave en el calendario televisivo boxístico de los últimos años.
Y es que el combate entre López y Martín será televisado por ESPN justo después de la emisión en ese mismo canal de la entrega del Heisman Trophy, premio al mejor jugador del año de fútbol americano universitario que arrastra a millones de espectadores y cuyo efecto cada año se deja notar en las cifras de audiencia de la velada boxística que Top Rank ofrece seguidamente en la misma cadena.
Por si esto no fuese suficiente, en el choque estará en juego además asegurarse el acceso a un campeonato mundial del peso superligero en 2023. En este sentido, se debe subrayar que López es 1º WBO y Martín es 6º WBO, organismo en el que reina un Josh Taylor que se espera que deje vacante su cinturón si gana a Catterall en la revancha.
En cuanto a que el choque sea también una eliminatoria WBC, esto tiene poca importancia, puesto que, por un lado, José Carlos Ramírez tiene derecho a enfrentarse primero al campeón Regis Prograis y, por el otro, es cuestionable que los equipos de López y Martín prefieran pelear contra el temible “Rougarou” antes que contra un coaspirante al cinto WBO vacante, como por ejemplo Liam Paro o Arnold Barboza.
Centrándonos ya en el combate en sí, como López se vio sorprendido en el peso ligero por George Kambosos, que tuvo un boxeo conservador y defensivo centrado en el jab y en el contragolpe, y se enfrentará en el peso superligero a un Sandor Martín zurdo con un estilo incluso más elusivo que el del australiano y que encima fue capaz de neutralizar con él a Mikey García, algunos sienten que el español podría volver a repetir su gesta. Sin embargo, esto parece improbable.
Si Teófimo López perdió ante Kambosos esto fue debido a que tuvo una muy mala gestión táctica, y lo que es peor aún, encaró el combate lleno de ira, bravuconería e infravalorando muchísimo a su oponente. Esto Kambosos lo aprovechó para, en la mejor noche de su carrera, anotarse un knockdown crucial y vencer una merecida pero ajustada decisión dividida. Por su parte, aunque muchos no supieron verlo, era previsible que Mikey García no iba a tener la potencia para noquear a Martín y que este último tenía las cualidades para generar complicaciones si ejecutaba bien su plan y se aprovechaba de la simpleza boxística de su rival, como efectivamente hizo.
No obstante, López tiene una pegada y una explosividad que García nunca ha tenido, especialmente si se compara al Teófimo actual con un Mikey en baja forma, desmotivado y al borde del retiro. Asimismo, a diferencia de García, que cometió el terrible error de criticar duramente a la empresa que le pagaba el sueldo (DAZN) e incluso la hizo culpable de sus propias decisiones, por lo que perdió la protección que le daba el matchmaking (y la de extraños poderes en la sombra), ni el promotor de López (Bob Arum), ni la cadena con la que está alineado (ESPN) ni, por lo tanto, los jueces tienen motivos para querer escarmentar al joven estadounidense, menos aún en una de las retransmisiones del año con más audiencia en el pugilismo de Estados Unidos.
A todo esto hay que sumar que, aunque López ha mostrado serias brechas tácticas en diversos momentos, cuenta con una enorme ventaja en experiencia de calidad y que en su mejor versión es capaz de desbordar con su talento, sus reflejos y sus variados recursos técnicos. Evidentemente, si Martín lo da todo, incluso yendo más allá de sus posibilidades, se desplaza sin cesar, molesta con sus directos, no comete ni un solo error en defensa y López vuelve a comportarse como un abusón sobrecofiando lanzando golpes de poder sin ton ni son, habría una ventana para una nueva sorpresa.
Con todo, si López se toma en serio el combate aprendiendo la lección de lo que le sucedió ante Kambosos, avanza escogiendo con calma sus veloces y potentes arremetidas, despliega bien su habilidad y está atento para contragolpear los directos de Martín, debería poder imponer su ventaja en contundencia y atletismo para aprovechar determinantemente las ocasiones que García no supo explotar y lograr una victoria que continúe su avance en el peso superligero.
En Estados Unidos, este combate y un nuevo paso adelante para el destacado prospecto del peso pesado Jared Anderson ante Jerry Forrest, serán emitidos por ESPN (por otras ramas de dicha cadena en otros países del continente americano) desde las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 de la madrugada en hora española.

Curiously, the victim of one of the biggest upsets of the 2021 season, the American Teófimo López 17(13KO)-1, and the protagonist of one of the most surprising victories of that same year, the Spaniard Sandor Martín 40(13KO)-2, will face each other this Saturday. In addition, they will not do it at a random time or place, but they will headline an evening at the Madison Square Garden in New York, United States, on a date that has become key in the televised boxing schedule of the year.
The fight between López and Martín will be aired on ESPN just after the broadcast on that same network of the Heisman Trophy Ceremony, award for the best player of the year in college football that draws many viewers and that positively affects the TV ratings of the boxing evening that Top Rank subsequently offers.
On the other hand, in the clash it will be at stake to fight in a world super lightweight championship in 2023. In this sense, it should be noted that López is WBO number 1 and Martín is number 6 and that the belt holder of that organization (Josh Taylor) is expected to vacate his title if he beats Catterall in the rematch.
As for the fight also being a WBC eliminator, this is of little importance, since, on the one hand, José Carlos Ramírez has the right to face the champion Regis Prograis first and, on the other, it is questionable that the teams of López and Martín will select for their fighters a bout against the fearsome «Rougarou» rather than against a challenger for the vacant WBO belt such as Liam Paro or Arnold Barboza.
Focusing now on the fight, since López was upset at lightweight by George Kambosos, who used a defensive boxing focused on the jab and the counterpunches, and will face at super lightweight a southpaw like Sandor Martín, whose style is even more elusive and who was able to neutralize Mikey García with it, some feel that the Spaniard could repeat his feat. However, this seems unlikely.
If Teófimo López lost his match against Kambosos that was because he had a very bad tactical management, and what is even worse, he faced the fight full of anger, cocky and greatly underestimating his opponent. Kambosos took advantage of this to, on the best night of his career, score a crucial knockdown and win a deserved but close split decision. For his part, although many experts did not saw it coming, it was predictable that Mikey García was not going to have the power to knock out Martín and that the latter had the qualities to generate difficulties if he executed his plan well and took advantage of the simplicity of his opponent’s boxing, as he actually did.
However, López has a punch and an explosiveness that García has never had, especially if we compare the current Teófimo with the out of shape, unmotivated and on the verge of retirement Mikey who faced Martín. Also, unlike García, who made the terrible mistake of harshly criticizing the company that paid his purses (DAZN) and even blamed it for his own decisions, losing the protection that matchmaking has given him (and the protection of powers behind the scenes), neither López’s promoter (Bob Arum), nor his network (ESPN) nor the judges have reasons to want to punish the young American, even less in one of the boxing broadcasts of the year with more audience in the United States.
To all this it must be added that, although López has shown serious tactical flaws at various times, he has a huge advantage in quality experience and in his best version he is capable of overwhelming with his talent, his reflexes and his varied technical resources. Obviously, if Martín gives his all, surpassing all possible expectations, moves incessantly, annoys with his straight shots and does not make a single mistake in defense while López once again behaves like an overconfident bully, throwing power shots without any ring intelligence, there would be a window for a new upset.
Still, if López learns the lesson from what happened to him against Kambosos, takes the fight seriously, moves forward calmly choosing his fast, powerful lunges, deploys his skill set well, and he is ready to counter Martin’s straight punches, he should be able to impose his forcefulness and athleticism to decisively take advantage of the occasions that García did not know how to exploit and achieve a victory that will allow him to keep advancing in the super lightweight division.
In the United States, this fight and a step up for blue-chip heavyweight prospect Jared Anderson against Jerry Forrest, will be broadcast on ESPN from 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT, while in the UK it will be aired by Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Arena from 2:00 a.m.
